    1 Ted Kirnbauer 8:26-9:20 5/10/15 To review the events from Chapter 6, John Stott’s comments on 6:8-12:24 are helpful: After the coming of the Spirit and the counter-attack of Satan (whose overthrow Luke has celebrated in 6:7), the church is almost ready to initiate its world-wide mission. So far it has been composed only of Jews and restricted to Jerusalem. Now, however, the Holy Spirit is about to thrust his people out into the wider world, and the apostle Paul is to be God's chosen instrument to pioneer this development. But first, in the next six chapters of the Acts [i.e. Stott is speaking of Acts 6-12], Luke explains how the foundations of the Gentile mission were laid by two remarkable men (Stephen the martyr and Philip the evangelist), followed by two remarkable conversions (Saul the Pharisee and Cornelius the centurion). These four men, each in his own way, together with Peter, through whose ministry Cornelius was converted, made an indispensable contribution to the global expansion of the church . Philip the evangelist (8:4-40) had the distinction of being both the first to share the good news with the despised Samaritans and the means by which the Jewish-Samaritan barrier was broken. He then led the first African to Christ, the Ethiopian eunuch, and baptized him. The simultaneous conversion and commissioning of Saul the Pharisee (9:1-31) were an indispensable prelude to the Gentile mission, since he was called to be pre-eminently the apostle to the Gentiles.

He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, "Cornelius!" 4 Cornelius stared at him in fear. "What is it, Lord?" he asked. The angel answered, "Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. 5 Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. 6 He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea." 7 When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants. 8 He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa. Cornelius and his family were devout and God-fearing. Two features about the devotion of Cornelius were his generosity to the needy and his regular prayers. Cornelius had a vision at about three in the afternoon. This was one of the three traditional Jewish times of prayer, and Cornelius later tells Peter that he was praying at the time. During Cornelius's prayer, he receives a vision through an angel.

    “Make Things Happen, Let Go” Message by DD Adams Providence United Methodist Church 2nd Sunday After Pentecost May 29, 2016 / Memorial Day Sunday After Jesus finished presenting all his words among the people, he entered Capernaum. A centurion had a servant who was very important to him, but the servant was ill and about to die. When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to Jesus to ask him to come and heal his servant. When they came to Jesus, they earnestly pleaded with Jesus. “He deserves to have you do this for him,” they said. “He loves our people and he built our synagogue for us.” Jesus went with them. He had almost reached the house when the centurion sent friends to say to Jesus, I’m also a man appointed under authority, with soldiers under me. I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and the servant does it.” When Jesus heard these words, he was impressed with the centurion. He turned to the crowd following him and said, “I tell you, even in Israel I haven’t found faith like this.” When the centurion’s friends returned to his house, they found the servant restored to health. This is God’s word for God’s people. Thanks be to God. Let’s pray. Lord of hosts who defends our cause, saves and shields us. Bless this word and cause it to take root in our hearts as we yield and give way to your instruction.

Barriers are like walls. Though we don’t usually build physical barriers like walls between each other, we often put up invisible barriers between each other—we don’t trust each other, or we’re not very friendly to each other. Do you think God wants us to put up barriers between each other? No! Do you think it’s easy or hard to talk with someone behind a barrier? God wants barriers to be knocked down. But He knows how hard it is for us to knock them down on our own. In fact, we can’t always do it on our own! God’s Spirit breaks down barriers for us so we don’t have to. Today we’re going to hear about one of the ways God’s Spirit broke down barriers so that all people could be included in His faith community. In this case, God broke down a barrier between the Jews and the Gentiles. Gentiles are people who aren’t born into the Jewish community. However, because of Jesus, Gentiles can now be included in God’s faith community. People didn’t always know that, though. It took an amazing moment through the Holy Spirit to bring the apostles and first believers to the knowledge that everyone—even Gentiles—can be part of God’s family.     Surprised by God Acts 10:1-11:18 John Breon Cornelius the Roman Centurion and Peter the Jewish Apostle both have visions from God that open them to new experiences. Cornelius’ men make a journey to find Peter. Then Peter and some other believers make a journey to Cornelius’ house. When the two men meet, Cornelius tells his story, then Peter tells not just his story but the gospel story. The impact of this encounter is confirmed by the Holy Spirit and the community of faith (see Beverly Roberts Gaventa, Acts, Abingdon New Testament Commentaries). Luke obviously sees this story as very important. He tells it in detail in chapter 10, repeats a good bit of it in chapter 11, and refers to it again in chapter 15. Let’s look at some background, hear the story again, and see some of what it means for us. We’ve seen the testimonies and ministries of Stephen and Philip, the conversions of Samaritans, an Ethiopian, and Saul. Now Luke returns to the Apostle Peter’s ministry. He reports a mission of Peter’s on the west coast of Judea. After raising a woman from the dead in Joppa, Peter remains in that town for a while, staying in the home of Simon the Tanner. That’s where Peter is when Cornelius the Centurion sends for him. Cornelius is a Roman, the captain of the Italian Regiment stationed in Caesarea. His situation may be unique—he has a house and his family is with him. Perhaps the influence of Jewish people around him has influenced him to believe in the One God rather than the many gods that Romans typically worshiped.
