  • Over 100 Opera Makers
#OPERAHARMONY CREATING OPERAS IN ISOLATION 1 3 WELCOME TO #OPERA HARMONY FROM FOUNDER – ELLA MARCHMENT Welcome to #OperaHarmony. #Opera Harmony is a collection of opera makers from across the world who, during this time of crisis, formed an online community to create new operas. I started this initiative when the show that I was rehearsing at Dutch National Opera was cancelled because of the lockdown. Using social media and online platforms I invited colleagues worldwide to join me in the immense technical and logistical challenge of creating new works online. I set the themes of ‘distance’ and ‘community’, organised artist teams, and since March have been overseeing the creation of twenty new operas. All the artists involved in #OperaHarmony are highly skilled professionals who typically apply their talents in creating live theatre performances. Through this project, they have had to adapt to working in a new medium, as well as embracing new technologies and novel ways of creating, producing, and sharing work. #OperaHarmony’s goal was to bring people together in ways that were unimaginable prior to Covid-19. Over 100 artists from all the opera disciplines have collaborated to write, stage, record, and produce the new operas. The pieces encapsulate an incredibly dark period for the arts, and they are a symbol of the unstoppable determination, and community that exists to perform and continue to create operatic works. This has been my saving grace throughout lockdown, and it has given all involved a sense of purpose. When we started building these works we had no idea how they would eventually be realised, and it is with great thanks that we acknowledge the support of Opera Vision in helping to both distribute and disseminate these pieces, and also for establishing a means in which audiences can be invited into the heart of the process too .

  • Stage Debut Awards
The Stage SEPTEMBER 27 DebutAT 7PM Awards Welcome to The Stage Debut Awards IN ASSOCIATION WITH ACCESS ENTERTAINMENT Thank you for joining us for The Stage Debut Awards 2020 – a unique awards ceremony in a unique year. When we launched these awards four years ago, we could not have foreseen just how crucial a platform for emerging talent they would become. This is a difficult time for everyone in theatre, but none more so than those just starting their careers. As director PJ Harris observed in an interview with The Stage this month: “If you were starting out now, having recently graduated, and you were still trying to get a foot in the door, I can’t imagine what you would do.” The Stage Debut Awards, in association with Access Entertainment, celebrate, champion and support precisely these types of theatremakers: performers and creatives just starting out in the sector. This year, they need our support more than ever. While for obvious reasons, we can’t all gather together at a physical awards ceremony this year to celebrate all our hugely talented nominees, I’m excited that we are able to stage this very special virtual ceremony, filmed at the beautiful Theatre Royal Haymarket. And I’m even more excited that as our host this year we have the wonderful Miriam-Teak Lee, one of our winners from the very first year of these awards, who has since gone on to become a bona fide West End star. As well as congratulating all our nominees, I’d also like to thank our reviewers, industry experts and judging panel – the ongoing success of these awards rests on their ability to spot fresh talent around the UK.

  • The Saving of Santa
Space Productions presents The SavingSTORY of Santa Written by Lobelia Golightly 20th-23rd December 2020 Painting by Silje Rettedal STORY Oh no! There’s something wrong with Santa. It’s up to chief elf ‘n’ safety officer Nordstrom, Aurora, the cleverest fairy and YOU, to save Christmas. Can you help overturn the dastardly deeds of revolting elves, Marmadron and Squelch before it’s too late? This delightful, original Christmas story was first staged at the Space in 2009. Updated and adapted as an interactive online Christmas adventure, to mark our 25th year, the Space is thrilled to revive this wonderful tale by Lobelia Golightly. *** DIRECTOR’S NOTE When we staged this back in 2009, alongside another original Christmas play, The Space Christmas Space Show (set in space) by Lucy Frederick, it was an opportunity to bring our professional in-house company, Space Productions and our participatory project, SpaceWorks, together. Co-directed by Sarah-Liisa Wilkinson, with some beautiful design from Irina Borisova, our wonderful cast created a magical Christmas story in the building. In 2020, we've embraced the challenges and opportunities that working on zoom brings - large polystyrene ice floes have made way for digital backgrounds, our cast has fewer fairies and elves but are equally wonderful (a lovely mix of those we've worked with over many years and those new to the Space this year) and we've upped the audience interaction. I hope you enjoy the results as much as we've enjoyed putting it all together. Merry Christmas! Adam Hemming Artistic Director CAST Baby Blossom & Mog Clementina Allende Iriarte Clementina graduated from East 15 Acting School in 2019 from the BA World Performance course.

Welcome to Piaf In 1980, Nottingham Playhouse was one of the first theatres to produce Pam Gems’ sensational play and an emerging new talent starred in the titular role – a young Imelda Staunton. Now, 40 years on, we are thrilled to bring Piaf back to our stage, in partnership with Leeds Playhouse. This emotionally-charged play explores the challenging and fascinating life and relationships of the enigmatic Edith Piaf with one of the West End’s leading performers, Jenna Russell, bringing this iconic character to life. Supported by a first-rate company, including some familiar Playhouse faces, our cast and creative team will truly transport you to the streets of Paris this summer. Whether you are joining us at the theatre, or watching our livestream from home, we are so pleased to finally welcome you back for this long-awaited production. It has been a difficult year, but the support of our audiences and friends has been overwhelming. We hope you enjoy the show as much as we have creating it. Stephanie Sirr Adam Penford Chief Executive Artistic Director Fri 29 Oct – Sat 20 Nov 2021 Mark Gatiss (The Madness of George III) stars in his own retelling of Dickens’ classic winter ghost story. It’s Christmas Eve. As the cold, bleak night draws in, the avaricious Ebenezer Scrooge is confronted by the spirit of his former business partner Jacob Marley. Bound in chains as punishment for a lifetime of greed, the unearthly figure explains it isn’t too late for Scrooge to change his miserly ways in order to escape the same fate, but first he’ll have to face three more eerie encounters… Staying true to the heart and spirit of the original novel, this production is filled with Dickensian, spine-tingling special effects; are you brave enough to join us? AN interview with jenna RUSSELL What was your introduction to theatre and when did you know you wanted to be an actor? My earliest memory of going to the theatre was when Mum took me to see Robert Lindsey in Hamlet.

  • Interview with Emma Gersch
Interview with Emma Gersch Emma Gersch is the Artistic Director of Moving Stories. Moving Stories creates inclusive and accessible theatre that engages and inspires its audiences. They have made large scale Shakespearean productions for the Minack Theatre, staged new writing across Europe and the UK, and created site specific events in bedrooms, offices, and castles. Moving Stories is also the home of Band of Mothers, a group of artists who harness the creative power of motherhood and allow it to inform their creative work. In this video, Emma discusses her extensive experience of directing plays for performance in open-air contexts. Emma, could you tell us a bit more about where Moving Stories came from and what you do now? The name was born out of a project called ‘Moving Stories’ that we did back in 2009. I say ‘we’ because the company was founded by myself and my partner Kitty Randall - she kind of co-founded the company with me. And funnily enough I was on my way to what was then the Southwark Playhouse - it's now moved to a bigger site in Elephant and Castle in London - and at the time it was in London Bridge and we, I had a meeting with the artistic director about the possibility of bringing a particular show that I was working on at the time. It was a Greek tragedy, Orestes, and we were going to be doing it in the in the main space. But as I arrived at London Bridge station - and I'd actually been working in Bath for six years so London was a little bit of an assault to the senses when I first arrived – I remember this journey
