Bergt 1 Siena Sofia Bergt Professor Insdorf Analysis of Film Language 26 February 2018 Colored Perspectives: Shading World War II Onscreen Films that deal with World War II—whether their narratives are concerned primarily with the war itself, the aura from which it emerged, or the ethos of its aftermath—have a particularly charged relationship to the presence or abjuration of color. As representations of a period that produced its own black-and-white archival footage, these worKs recKon with color not simply as an aesthetic choice, but also as a tool through which to define their own relationship to perspectival subjectivity and claims of historical authenticity. By examining the role of color in three vastly different World War II films— Andrzej Wajda’s black-and-white 1958 rendition of the war’s last 24 hours in “Ashes and Diamonds,” the Harlequin prewar chaos of Bob Fosse’s 1972 “Cabaret,” and the delicate balance of color and blacK-and-white characterizing the postwar divided Germany of Wim Wenders’ 1987 “Wings of Desire”—we may access a richer understanding, not simply of the films’ stylistic approaches, but also (and perhaps more significantly) of their relationship to both their origins and audience. Color, that is, acts in these three films as a chromatic guide by which to untangle each respective text’s taKe on both subjectivity and objectivity. Bergt 2 The best “entry point” into these stylistically and temporally distinct films’ chromatic motifs is through three strikingly analogous crowd scenes—each of which uses communal participation in a diegetically well-known song to highlight a moment of dramatic urgency or volatility. -

Chapel Hill 2009 Approved by: Laurie Langbauer Jeanne Moskal Thomas Reinert Beverly Taylor James Thompson © 2009 Jen Cadwallader ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT JEN CADWALLADER: Spirits of the Age: Ghost Stories and the Victorian Psyche (Under the direction of Beverly Taylor) “Spirits of the Age: Ghost Stories and the Victorian Psyche” situates the ghost as a central figure in an on-going debate between nascent psychology and theology over the province of the psyche. Early in the nineteenth century, physiologists such as Samuel Hibbert, John Ferriar and William Newnham posited theories that sought to trace spiritual experiences to physical causes, a move that participated in the more general “attack on faith” lamented by intellectuals of the Victorian period. By mid-century, various of these theories – from ghosts as a form of “sunspot” to ghost- seeing as a result of strong drink – had disseminated widely across popular culture, and, I argue, had become a key feature of the period’s ghost fiction. Fictional ghosts provided an access point for questions regarding the origins and nature of experience: Ebenezer Scrooge, for example, must decide if he is being visited by his former business partner or a particularly nasty stomach disorder. The answer to this question, here and in ghost fiction across the period, points toward the shifting dynamic between spiritual and scientific epistemologies. -

SHROPSHIRE REVISITED Theodora and Alfred Kroeber, 1959 Our century continues to be much occupied with death, and our creative energies to expend themselves on one aspect or another of death, whether in the waging of war, the invention of implements and devices of war, or in pol- itical and social thinking, or in the plastic arts and literature. Poets are said to speak prophetically. This could mean that, some time before the first World Wiar, their poems had begun to emphasize death over life. Poe, Emily Dickinson, Swinburne, Housman, Kipling, Yeats, and Eliot do indeed use the words death, dead, die, dying, significantly more often than the words life, alive, live, living, and Housman, at the seeming apex of this twentieth- century death-directed interest, is discovered to have employed seventy-one per cent of death words to twenty-nine per cent of life words.1 Since Housman Vrote A Shro shire Lad there has been a world war, and since he published his Last Poems there have been the vertiginous twenties, a depression, and a second World ibr, with their presently complex aftermaths. Reviewing the poetry of the past half-century or so, a style profile, however tentative and incomplete, begins to emerge. We--the English and the Americans--faced what followed on Sarajevo with the bravado and despair of the lads of Housman's balladlike and simple poetry. We volunteered for glory and friendship and death. Never since our immersion in that first world war have values been for us as clear-cut as they were before. It is Housman who gives those lost values their perfect and limited, if astringently negative, voice. -

Introduction Artemio Rodriguez is a printmaker currently based in Michoacán, Mexico, whose work has drawn influence from medieval European woodcuts and Mexican printmakers such as José Guadalupe Posada.1 He is currently represented by Davidson Galleries in Seattle, and has also founded a print artists’ collective in Michoacán, La Mano Gráfica.2 Until recently he managed La Mano Press, a collective based in California dedicated to the distribution of print art. One of the largest pieces by Rodriguez is The Triumph of Death, a monumental work that appropriates Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s 1562 oil painting, also titled The Triumph of Death, that is currently housed at the Prado Museum in Madrid (figs. 10 and 11).3 Created in 2007, Rodriguez’s work features nine individual woodcut prints (each 31 5/8 x 47 3/4 in.) that, when arranged appropriately, create a version of the Bruegel painting that is about twice the size of the original (96in. -

ART HISTORICAL TERMS AND CONCEPTS Subject Matter: The Great War is a history painting within a landscape set out over four panels, a triptych with a predella panel below. The narrative begins in the left panel, the soldiers in their steel helmets depart for war through a thick haze, already doomed in Dix’s view. In the right panel, a wounded soldier is carried from the battlefield, while the destructive results of battle are starkly depicted in the central panel. This is a bleak and desolate landscape, filled with death and ruin, presided over by a corpse. Trees are charred, bodies are battered and torn and lifeless. War has impacted every part of the landscape. (This panel was a reworking on an earlier painting Dix had done entitled The Trench, 1920-3. David Crocket wrote: “many, if not most, of those who saw this painting in Cologne and Berlin during 1923-24 knew nothing about this aspect of the war.” The predella scene shows several soldiers lying next to one another. Perhaps they are sleeping in the trenches, about to go back into the cycle of battle when they awake, or perhaps they have already fallen and will never wake again. Dix repeatedly depicted World War I and its consequences after having fought in it himself as a young man. -

I examine four poet- painters associated with the Japanese literati tradition in the Edo (1603-1867) and Meiji (1867- 1912) periods: Yosa Buson (1716-83), Ema Saikō (1787-1861), Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) and Natsume Sōseki (1867-1916). Each artist fashions a lyric subjectivity constituted by the kinds of blending found in literati painting and poetry. I argue that each artist’s thoughts and feelings emerge in the tensions generated in the process of blending forms, genres, and the ideas (aesthetic, philosophical, social, cultural, and historical) that they carry with them. -

Moveable Type Vol. 5 2009: CLARE O’DOWD 1 Kurt Schwitters' Merzbau : Chaos, Compulsion and Creativity For nearly thirty years until his death in 1948, the German artist Kurt Schwitters constructed environments for himself: self-contained worlds, places of safety, nests. Everywhere he went he stockpiled materials and built them into three-dimensional, sculptural edifices. By the time he left Hanover in 1937, heading for exile in England, Schwitters, his wife, his son, his parents, their lodgers, and a large number of guinea pigs had all been living in the midst of an enormous, detritus-filled sculpture that had slowly engulfed large parts of their home for almost twenty years. 1 Schwitters was by no means the only artist to have a cluttered studio, or to collect materials for his work. So the question must be asked, what was it about Schwitters’ activities that was so unusual? How can these and other aspects of his work and behaviour be considered to go beyond what might be regarded as normal for an artist working at that time? And more importantly, what were the reasons for this behaviour? In this paper, I will examine the beginnings of the Merzbau , the architectural sculpture that Schwitters created in his Hanover home. -

Phantasmagoria: Ghostly entertainment of the Victorian Britain Yurie Nakane / Tsuda College / Tokyo / Japan Abstract Phantasmagoria is an early projection show using an optical instrument called a magic lantern. Brought to Britain from France in 1801, it amused spectators by summoning the spirits of ab- sent people, including both the dead and the living. Its form gradually changed into educational amusement after it came to Britain. However, with the advent of spiritualism, its mysterious na- ture was re-discovered in the form of what was called ‘Pepper’s Ghost’. Phantasmagoria was reborn in Britain as a purely ghostly entertainment, dealing only with spirits of the dead, be- cause of the mixture of the two notions brought from France and the United States. This paper aims to shed light on the role that phantasmagoria played in Britain during the Victorian period, how it changed, and why. Through observing the transnational history of this particular form of entertainment, we can reveal a new relationship between the representations of science and superstitions. Keywords Phantasmagoria, spiritualism, spectacle, ghosts, the Victorian Britain, superstitions Introduction Humans have been mesmerized by lights since ancient times. Handling lights was considered a deed conspiring with magic or witchcraft until the sixteenth century, owing to its sanctified appearance; thus, some performers were put in danger of persecution. At that time, most people, including aristocrats, were not scientifically educated, because science itself was in an early stage of development. However, the flourishing thought of the Enlightenment in the eighteenth century altered the situation. Entering the age of reason, people gradually came to regard illusions as worthy of scientific examination.
