May/June 2011 Praise the Lord, all you nations; Extol Him all you peoples. For great is His love toward us, And the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord. Psalm 117 CURE International Prayer Guide May/June 2011 1 CURE Worldwide I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the Gospel From the first day until now, being confident of this, That He who began a good work in you, Will carry it on to completion until the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:3-6 Pray for the New Believer in your email who has recently come to Christ through the ministry outreach of CURE. Continue to pray for the impact we have on patients, both physically and spiritually. Afghanistan Praise God for the renewed commitment of our neonatologist to serve in our CURE Kabul hospital for another year. Praise also for the increased number of women seeking fistula treatment and the ongoing donor support of this program. Pray for the ongoing safety, leadership and security of our staff and patients as spring brings with it renewed efforts of fighting by various militant groups. Pray also that the government will work quickly with CURE staff to expedite the release of donated equipment and supplies being held in customs. Bethlehem Praise God that we continue to seek ways in which to establish a presence in Bethlehem. Pray for God’s continuing wisdom as we work with local partners to establish a medical and spiritual ministry in Bethlehem. Dominican Republic Praise God for the successful scoliosis spine surgeries that were performed at our CURE Dominican hospital. Praise also for the many encouraging visits in April from donors, churches and organizations interested in supporting the work of CURE. Pray for continued energy, wisdom and discernment for the hospital leadership, especially for our Medical Director, Dan Ruggles, Interim Executive Director, Robbie Jackson, Spiritual Director, Pastor Samuel Reyes and Assistant Executive Director, Lidia Ferreras. CURE International Prayer Guide May/June 2011 2 Egypt Praise God that our ministry to the disabled children in Egypt continues and that the recent political unrest has not impacted our medical outreach in Cairo. Pray for the people of Egypt as they navigate through political changes. Ethiopia Praise God that Dr. Mary Bernard has accepted the position of Staff Anesthesiologist at our CURE Ethiopia hospital.. She and her family expect to relocate to our hospital in Addis Ababa in August, 2011. Pray for the timely and successful settlement of their home in Washington state. Pray also for Dr. Kaiser Raphael as he transitions back to Pakistan in July to rejoin his family. Dr. Kaiser has also faithfully served in our Malawi hospital and will be greatly missed. Thank you Dr. Kaiser. Honduras Praise God for our interim Medical Director, Dr. Ted Beemer and his wife Susan. Dr. Beemer, an orthopedic surgeon and Susan, a certified nurse anesthesiologist, have been working with Dr. Gustavo Vasquez to increase the number of children treated at the CURE Honduras hospital. Ted and Susan will continue serving at our hospital until our new Medical Director, Dr. Jay Bridgeman, his wife Pauline, and their 3 children move to Honduras this summer. Pray for ongoing protection for our Spiritual Director, Aracely Castillo and her family as they recover from several health and safety concerns this past month. Recently, Aracely shared the following story of a family who had brought their son in for treatment: “We had a special case of a young couple from Comayagua, they came to the hospital because their son has clubfoot. But also his mother has a disease that makes her skin looks really bad, and due to her illness she is rejected and humiliated. But I gave counsel and encouraged her, and her husband accepted Jesus as his Savior. They are praying for healing.” We often hear stories of families who are rejected and humiliated because their child is born with a disability. Even though this family was living with the challenge of a son born with clubfoot and a mother with a facial disease, we rejoice that, through the caring counsel they received, the husband received a new life in Christ. CURE International Prayer Guide May/June 2011 3 Kenya Praise God for the provision of our new CURE Kijabe Medical Director, Dr. Joseph Theuri. Dr. Theuri has served as our Assistant Medical Director, working alongside Dr. Tim Mead for several years. We rejoice in this new leadership role for Dr. Theuri! Pray for the transition of leadership from Dr. Mead to Dr. Theuri. Pray also for the Meads as they prepare to leave Kijabe after having faithfully served there for over 10 years, they now will be serving at the CURE Oasis Hospital in the UAE. Malawi Praise God for the impending completion of the Day Surgery/Private Ward wing of the Beit CURE Hospital of Malawi. The addition of this new wing will enable us to develop a thriving private patient service so that we can continue to serve patients who face financial difficulties. Praise also that Dr. John Cashman, Orthopedic Consultant, and his wife, Robyn, recently welcomed a healthy baby boy into their family. Pray for the President of Malawi. Pray that the nation will remain peaceful as they work to resolve conflicts with his ruling party. New laws curbing freedom of speech and the removal of foreign diplomats have increased tensions. Niger Praise God for the collaborative efforts of Drs. Chris Lavy and Jean François Negrini as they worked on surgical cases at our CURE Niger hospital in April. Praise also for the Lord’s guidance and wisdom as our Executive Director, Leron Lehman and Spiritual Director, Dan Hassane Karami met with local Imams to continue to establish good relationships. Pray for wisdom as the hospital leadership seeks to work effectively and with integrity with our Muslim staff. Uganda Praise God for the Lord’s provision in sustaining our CURE Uganda hospital staff as they care for a record numbers of patients. Praise God also that He continues to keep our staff and patients safe as sporadic violence continues with riots in Kampala due to political upheaval. Pray for staff coverage needs so that our doctors can take their scheduled and much needed leave. Pray also for a new sponsor for the mobile clinics for this next year. The mobile clinics provide both medical and spiritual outreach to many people in areas that might otherwise never have the opportunity to hear the Gospel or learn of healing for their children. CURE International Prayer Guide May/June 2011 4 United Arab Emirates Praise God for the ongoing trust that the royal family of Abu Dhabi has in the CURE Oasis hospital and their request that the hospital leadership participate in further development of the Christian church presence in Al Ain. Praise also that the new hospital construction is on schedule. Pray for the ongoing personnel recruitment efforts to fill current open positions and future needs once the new hospital opens. Zambia Praise God for the recent surprise and encouraging visit of Zambian President Banda. President Banda made a commitment to support our nursing staff expenses and provide an ambulance for our Beit CURE hospital of Zambia. Pray that the National Housing Authority plans for a housing development near the hospital grounds will not negatively impact the ministry of CURE. Pray also for recruitment efforts to fill the vacant Finance Controller position. CURE Clubfoot Worldwide (CCW) Praise God for the recent report of the Cure Clubfoot training in Haiti. In the past 12 months, despite the continued struggles in the aftermath of the earthquake, we have been able to establish clubfoot clinics in several areas, staffed with eager, energetic staff.
