craft Horn and Downes brieﬂ y joined legendary prog- rock band Yes, before Trevor quit to pursue his career as a producer. Dollar and ABC won him chart success, with ABC’s The Lexicon Of Love giving the producer his fi rst UK No.1 album. He produced Malcolm McLaren and introduced the hitherto-underground world of scratching and rapping to a wider audience, then went on to produce Yes’ biggest chart success ever with the classic Owner Of A Lonely Heart from the album 90125 — No.1 in the US Hot 100. Horn and his production team of arranger Anne Dudley, engineer Gary Langan and programmer JJ Jeczalik morphed into electronic group Art Of Noise, recording startlingly unusual-sounding songs like Beat Box and Close To The Edit. In 1984 Trevor pulled all these elements together when he produced the epic album Welcome To The Pleasuredome for Liverpudlian bad-boys Frankie Goes To Hollywood. When Trevor met his wife, Jill Sinclair, her brother John ran a studio called Sarm. Horn worked there for several years, the couple later bought the Island Records-owned Basing Street Studios complex and renamed it Sarm West. They started the ZTT imprint, to which many of his artists such as FGTH were signed, and the pair eventually owned the whole gamut of production process: four recording facilities, rehearsal and rental companies, a publisher (Perfect Songs), engineer and producer management and record label. Consisting of four-fifths of the classic lineup of Yes in the Seventies (only Chris Squire is missing), this quartet, put together by Jon Anderson, recorded an eponymous album in 1989 and then embarked on a worldwide tour. This generous-length show was captured on the American leg of the tour. It opens with brief solo sets by vocalist Anderson (“Time and a Word,” “Owner of a Lonely Heart”), who enters the auditorium from the rear and sings while walking down the aisle to the stage; guitarist Steve Howe (a couple of acoustic instrumentals) and keyboardist Rick Wakeman (“Catherine Parr,” “Merlin the Magician”), before the whole group launches into Yes’ classic “Long Distance Runaround” at the 24-minute mark. The song contains a solo by drummer Bill Bruford. Then comes “Birthright” from their one album (“Teakbois,” the bouncy rocker “Brother of Mine” and “Themes” also are covered from the disc). The wonderful central core is a trio of Yes songs: “And You and I,” “I’ve Seen All Good People” and a 19- minute “Close to the Edge.” The show ends with “Roundabout,” then an encore of “Starship Troop” after the credits roll. This unusual release finds progressive rock keyboardist Wakeman on stage in a small club, with just a microphone and a grand piano.

1 Progressive Rock, “Close to the Edge, // and the Boundaries of style JOHNCOVACH 1 “Progressive rock,” “classical rock,” “art rock,” “symphonic rock”- these labels have been used over the last twenty-five years by various authors to designate a style of popular music developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, primarily by British rock musicians.’ During this time groups such as King Crimson, the Moody Blues, Procol Harum, the Nice (and later Emerson, Lake, and Palmer), Gentle Giant, Genesis, Yes, Jethro Tull, Van der Graaf Generator, and Deep Purple attempted to blend late-’60s and early-’70s rock and pop with elements drawn from the Western art-music tradi- tion.2 This attempt to develop a kind of “concert-hall rock‘‘-which was neverthe- less still often performed in stadiums and arenas-was the result of a tendency on the part of some rockers and their fans to view rock as“listening music” (as opposed to dance music), an aesthetic trend that Wilfrid Mellers3 attributes to the influence of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band of 1967.4 The early progressive rockers were not the first to employ musical elements gen- erally associated with the “classical” or art-music tradition in their arrangements. They were formed in 1968, and recently celebrated (in 2018) a remarkable 50th anniversary, with their acclaimed and hugely successful #YES50: Celebrating 50 Years of YES tour. There have been 19 full-time members of the band during this period. They have sold more than 30 million records worldwide. They have won a Grammy and received a further five nominations. They have released 21 studio albums, having two number one records in the UK and seven Top 10 successes in the US. And in 2017 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Now, all of this is true. But it doesn't even begin to explain how Yes have become one of the most influential and vital bands of the past five decades, one that altered the parameters of music, and in the process invented, then reinvented progressive rock. It all began in June 1968, with the first line-up of vocalist Jon Anderson, guitarist Peter Banks, bassist Chris Squire, keyboard player Tony Kaye and drummer Bill Bruford. They made their live debut on August 4 the same year at a youth camp in Essex. And their potential was amply highlighted when offered the chance to support Cream at their farewell concert at the Royal Albert Hall on November 26, '68. The band signed to Atlantic Records, releasing their self-titled first album during August 1969. This immediately showcased the band's musical credibility and virtuosity.

One could drop the needle on the edge of the LP, turn up the volume, stare at the album cover’s colorful, hallucinatory landscapes, and let the music take you along galactic pathways to undiscovered planets. Piloting such sonic voyages was a talented group of creative musicians who combined centuries-old musical traditions with the latest tools and an immense spectrum of sounds: symphonic strings, cathedral organs, driving rock drums, meticulous jazz improvisation, offbeat time signatures, dramatic rhythmic shifts. Over all soared vocal harmonies and mystical lyrics. 61 It was music that bridged space and time, powered on the optimism of an age fascinated by the prospect of a cosmic future. No wonder the group chose for its name the shortest, most positively charged word in the Selected Discography English language: Yes. The band evolved from humble beginnings. Self- taught bassist Chris Squire played in psychedelic groups in mid-sixties London. After a headmaster sent him home from secondary school with money for a haircut, Squire kept the cash and never returned, later starting a group called Mabel Greer’s Toyshop. He soon met journey man vocalist and songwriter Jon Anderson. Both admired the vocal harmony groups of the day – Simon and Garfunkel, the Association – and first collaborated YES THE YES ALBUM on “Sweetness,” a sunshine-dappled song of idyllic love.
