Results of a sampling Posted: Aug 2, 2013 10:41am ET Every state in America makes wine. So everywhere I go, I try to taste at least a few examples of the local product. As my wife and I spend several weeks every summer in the Colorado Rockies, we have been exposed to Colorado bottlings from time to time. I've ordered glasses or bottles of local wines in places such as Arizona, Texas, Michigan, Maryland and Virginia, which get little respect except for a relatively few supporters. Generally I find what I've tasted likable enough. But two big questions keep me from hopping up and down with excitement. I ran into both of those questions as I tasted through a representative sample of 10 Colorado wines with Kyle Schlachter of the Colorado Wine Press website. He has tweeted me when I omitted Colorado from a comment on states worth noting. The first issue involves price. Why drink a pretty good $25 Colorado Syrah when I can buy a terrific one from Washington or Australia for less? If you live in Colorado, the answer is simple. To encourage your local wine industry, drink Harvey Steiman their wines and let them know how you feel about them. And there's a certain pride of place. Yay, us! WINEMAKER NOTES Fresh raspberry and strawberry bubble gum notes dominate the nose. On the palate, the wine is fruity and crisp showing bright red fruit notes accentuated by a touch of sweetness which also helps balance the vibrant acid. As unique as the Grand Valley itself, this rare wine is best served chilled among friends. For the perfect afternoon on the patio serve this versatile wine with spicy world cuisine or anything from the grill. VINEYARD DETAILS 100% Theresa’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Six Clones, Planted 2001 PRODUCTION NOTES The grapes are harvested several weeks before our traditional full color Cabernet Sauvignon, which gives Coral a different fruit profile as well as a bit more acid. Production begins with a gentle “free run” juice that is naturally liberated under the weight of the grapes all while minimizing skin contact time yielding a very lightly colored rosé wine. Coral is technically a dry rosé at just 7 grams residual sugar per liter. Bottled 3/5/2021. 1538 cases produced. Chardonnay’ on 4 Rootstocks Grown in Western Colorado
Evaluation of 35 Wine Grape Cultivars and ‘Chardonnay’ on 4 Rootstocks Grown in Western Colorado R. A. Hamman, Jr.1 and I. E. Dami2 Introduction Wine grape performance is influenced by climatic conditions during each growing season. Evaluating the performance by measuring growth and fruit composition parameters of cultivars grown in western Colorado is extremely helpful to Colorado wine grape growers when deciding what cultivar to plant. Interest in western Colorado’s potential to commercially produce wine grapes continues to increase. Production has grown from less than 20 acres in 1980 to over 350 acres in 1997. Vineyards are being planted at a rate of approximately 25-30 acres per year. These vineyards are being planted in various locations throughout western Colorado often where commercial grape production has never occurred. The topography of these locations varies enough to dramatically influence microclimates and thus fruit quality and production. The following report is intended to provide growers with 1997 performance characteristics of 35 cultivars and one cultivar Chardonnay clone104 grafted to four rootstocks grown at the Orchard Mesa Research Center in Grand Junction, CO. 1Viticulturist. 2018 Riesling
2018 Riesling Grand Valley, Colorado Background The Grand Valley AVA is high altitude winemaking which ranges between 4000ft and 4500ft (some of the highest in the world). Following along the Colorado River and Sourcing surrounded by mountains, the altitude brings intense 100% Grand Valley AVA, sunlight during the day and cold nights. This slows ripening Palisades, Colorado overnight, developing bright fruit flavors and crisp acidity. Varietal Composition Our winemaker convinced us to take a chance on producing 100% Riesling a “DRY” Riesling from Colorado and it turned out to be amazing. The 2017 vintage was fairly even tempered, and Technical Data calm. The cold evenings helped to slow ripening, allowing a pH 3.26 wonderful maturity to the tropical fruit flavors. We picked TA 0.60 g/100mL right on schedule, in the early morning of September 8th and RS Dry >0.1g/L rushed to the winery in a refrigerated truck. Alc. 14.1% Winemaking Winemaker We received our Riesling fruit in perfect condition. Sent to Brian Graham the press whole cluster, to preserve the natural elegant aromas, After pressing and a 24 settling, the wine was racked and allowed to begin a native fermentation. Once inoculated the wine sailed through fermentation with no hiccups. Our goal was to retain the wonderful crisp acid, floral bouquet and spicy tropical fruits Riesling is known for, paying homage to the dry crisp Riesling wines of Alsace, France. No oak was used. Tasting Notes The nose shows abundant fruit notes of pear, citrus blossom, jasmine, ginger, and fresh honey that gets more floral as it sits in the glass. -

~Topline Report~ Tracking Study of KPIs Colorado Wine Industry Development Board April 10, 2020 Background: . The Colorado Wine Industry Development Board (CWIDB) has tracked Colorado wine drinkers’ attitudes and usage of Colorado wines each spring, since 2014. In 2020, a pared-down survey was conducted to measure KPIs (Key performance indicators) among Colorado wine drinkers. This report is a topline of key measures among the total sample comparing three years of data. No summary or recommendations are included in this topline. As a bonus, banner breaks comparing gender, age, aware of Colo wines vs. unaware and consumed Colo wines vs. not consumed are in the excel spreadsheet of data - sent separately. Objectives: . Compare statistically relevant changes in 2020 vs. 2019 vs. 2018 KPIs (awareness, usage, purchase locations and attitudes) toward Colorado wines among the total sample of monthly wine drinkers in Colorado. Save costs with a shorter questionnaire, results among the total sample only and a smaller base size. Respondent Criteria: . N= 250; mix males, females (no more than 60%) . Ages 21-70 - quotas set at 21-35 (30%), 36-50 (30%), 51-70 (40%) to align w/ previous tests . Colorado residents . Past month wine consumption . Consumption frequency quotas to ensure respondent mix comparable to previous tests: Daily – 8% More than once a week 36% Once a week 19% 2-3 times / month 26% 1 time a month 8% Special occasions 3% Key Findings 1. Awareness (Q1) Awareness of Colo Wine remains 75%. California, Italy, France significantly fell in Awareness during 2020. Washington Oregon and New York states rose significantly in Awareness in 2020.
