Club sat down with Tom & Jerry director Tim Story and producer Chris DiFaria to talk about how the two approached adapting these much-beloved characters. Is there a Tom & Jerry bible? A designated archivist? And how does a movie appealing to kids in 2021 deal with the realities of what happens when someone takes a frying pan to the face? Or does it? Close Enough is a surreal animated comedy about a married couple, their 5-year-old daughter, and their two divorced best friends/roommates all living together on the east side of Los Angeles. They’re in their 30s and working, taking care of their family and pursuing their dreams. Oh, and also avoiding time-traveling snails, stripper clowns, and murderous mannequins. This season, they are up against haunted couches, bulbous horses, time-traveling whiskeys and a literal houseguest from hell. Tom & Jerry is coming to the big screen on Feb, but you can skip the theater and watch the movie on HBO Max the same day. This pair of best friends is starting over in the big city. When Jerry moves into a hotel, Tom is hired to track him down before a big event happens. In a clip from the live-action-animation hybrid Tom and Jerry movie reboot, the classic cartoon characters trash not just a hotel room but the whole building. The duo was created in 1940 by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, who would later co-found the major animation studio Hanna-Barbera Productions. 114 original short films were made for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer during the first era of Tom and Jerry cartoons, after which the characters migrated to other studios. As cats and mice tend to be, Tom and Jerry are born rivals. In most shorts and episodes, the two are engaged in ever-escalating fights that result in slapstick humor and exaggerated physical gags. A mutual obsession that borders on love drives both to develop elaborate strategies in attempts to outwit the other that often result in cartoon violence and destruction of their environment. Despite their rivalry, Tom and Jerry put aside their differences when faced with a common enemy, or when their interests align. The anthropomorphized animals possess human intelligence and instincts, although neither speaks for the most part. Following the toon's run at MGM, Tom & Jerry went through various iterations before making its way to Warner Bros., the show's current owner. Cartoon Network offers a sneak peek at the characters' latest incarnation in Tom & Jerry The Movie on Youtube. The 80-year-old toons haven't aged a day, although their animation has gotten a fresh new update since their last appearance on screen. Like Space Jam did with Looney Tunes, this new reboot plucks cartoon characters from their old-timey, animated world and places them in the "real" (live-action) modern world. Cartoon Network is a subsidiary of Warner Bros., which means that Tom & Jerry The Movie will be released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously like all of the studio's 2021 productions. Tickets are on sale now for a February premiere. Watch the old frenemies reunite to cause mayhem in the trailer here: In the real world, Tom and Jerry appear to be squatting in a hotel. It's implied that Jerry has taken up residence as a building pest, but Tom's reason for hanging around isn't established. The scene begins with Tom and Jerry squabbling as per usual and quickly escalates into a full-on chase when a guest walks in with Spike, a pugnacious bulldog from the old cartoons. Chloë Grace Moretz plays a flustered hotel employee trying in vain to control the situation by bartering with the toons before it erupts into chaos. Michael Peña (Ant-Man) plays the hotel manager who gets caught up in the action as other hotel staff played by Jordan Bolger (Peaky Blinders), Patsy Ferran (How to Build a Girl), and Christina Chong (Doctor Who) look on. If the idea of an animated cat and mouse destroying a luxury hotel wasn't enough of a selling point, a few other names involved in the movie might be a draw. A litter of comedians including Rob Delaney, SNL's Colin Jost, Ken Jeong, and Lil Rel Howery all feature, Howery only audibly as the Angel and Devil in Tom's conscience. Reggaeton-pop star Ozuna also makes a surprise cameo as one of the hotel staff, perhaps jockeying for a future role in Cats 2 alongside Taylor Swift and Jason Derulo. Director Tim Story has said that keeping the characters 2-dimensional in a 3-D world was the best way to stay true to the original cartoon—the combination has worked in the past, so the addition of a real-world setting could make for a fun, whimsical experience. Considering the chaotic state of the world, the idea of cartoon animals wreaking havoc in a hotel doesn't actually seem all that implausible. our favorite cat and mouse team take their antics to New York City in the new Tom and Jerry movie! Premiering Friday, February on HBO Max, one of the most beloved rivalries is reignited when Jerry moves into the nicest hotel in the Big Apple days before the venue is scheduled to host “the wedding of the century.” Not wanting a mouse problem (understandable), the event planner hires Tom, a cat, (less understandable) to get rid of Jerry.

    Tom and Jerry Tom of Tom and Jerry fame must be one of the all time favorite cartoon cats. This cat and mouse cartoon series kicked of on February 20, 1940 with the short "Puss Gets the Boot". Distributed by MGM, directed by Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera and produced by Rudolf Ising, this Academy Award nominee ran for just over 9 mins. Apart from the cat being referred to as "Jasper" and not Tom, and the mouse not having a name, this first adventure pretty much established the Tom and Jerry format. Cat views mouse as a tasty snack. Cat chases mouse but is usually outwitted. Plenty of violence, mayhem and destruction. Lots of visual gags, little dialogue. This basically is the formula for every successful cat and mouse animated cartoon, and no other feline and rodent pair were better performers of the formula than Tom and Jerry. The first series of Tom and Jerry pictures, directed by Hanna and Barbera for MGM, 1940 -1957, were absolute masterpieces of animation. Beautifully drawn, very fast paced action all the way and lovable, likable characters. Tom nearly always came off the worst in any encounter with cute little Jerry mouse. The cat would often be gullible enough to accept a lighted stick of dynamite from the rodent, stand there admiring it until it exploded, leaving him nothing but a black smudge with a pair of blinking, disbelieving eyes. Hilariously impossible things happened in these early T&J shorts, the duo would hit each other with anything they could lay their hands on, push each other of off buildings, shoot each other and commit every conceivable (and inconceivable) act of violence to their opponent.

Bradley’s collaborations with three sets of directors are discussed separately in order to highlight three academic concerns. An investigation into the various practical necessities and cultural influences on Bradley’s work with directors Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising sets the historical scene at the beginning of the composer’s career.
