Sociobiology in Turmoil Again
GENERAL ARTICLES Sociobiology in turmoil again Raghavendra Gadagkar Altruism is defined as any behaviour that lowers the Darwinian fitness of the actor while increasing that of the recipient. Such altruism (especially in the form of lifetime sterility exhibited by sterile workers in eusocial insects such as ants, bees, wasps and termites) has long been considered a major difficulty for the theory of natural selection. In the 1960s W. D. Hamilton potentially solved this problem by defining a new measure of fitness that he called inclusive fitness, which also included the effect of an individual’s action on the fitness of genetic relatives. This has come to be known as inclusive fitness theory, Hamilton’s rule or kin selection. E. O. Wilson almost single-handedly popularized this new approach in the 1970s and thus helped create a large body of new empirical research and a large community of behavioural ecologists and kin selectionists. Adding thrill and drama to our otherwise sombre lives, Wilson is now leading a frontal attack on Hamilton’s approach, claiming that the inclusive fitness theory is not as mathematically general as the standard natural selection theory, has led to no additional biological insights and should therefore be aban- doned. Its center-stage is “the genome,” where social and environmental information and genetic variation interact to influence social behavior through dynamic shifts in gene expression across multiple bodies and time-scales. With the advent of whole-genome sequencing technology, comparative genomics, and computational tools for mining patterns of association across widely disparate datasets, social insects are being experimented with to identify genetic networks underlying autism, novelty-seeking and aggression evolutionarily shared with humans. Drawing on the writings of key social insect biologists, and historians and philosophers of science, I investigate how the historical development of social insect research on wasps, ants and bees shape central approaches in sociogenomics today, in particular, with regards to shifting understandings of “the individual” in relation to “the social.” Keywords: sociogenomics; social insect; sociobiology; postgenomics; biology and society © 2019 Sainath Suryanarayanan. The ends of the law focuses on human flourishing, and the means of the law is to channel human conduct. The needs and wants of humans ground the norms of the law, from the overarching to the secondary. Hence, for the law to be suitable and effective, it must be based on a clear vision of the human condition. Evolutionary psychology is a discipline that helps to meet this requisite, for it is a powerful, but controversial, vehicle for analyzing and understanding human behavior, and hence, legal and social doctrine. Commentary World views and Trojan horses in the sociobiology debate 1. The sociobiology debate It is now over a quarter century since the famous sociobiology controversy began around Harvard zoologist Edward O Wilson’s huge tome Sociobiology: The New Synthesis. In that book Wilson set out to document and synthesize several decades of new theoretical and empirical research on animal social behaviour. Sociobiology was defined as “the systematic study of the biological basis of all social behaviour”. The idea was, that just like other features, behaviour, too, was undergoing evolution, which meant that it, too, could be included in the Neodarwinist paradigm, in which evolution is expressed as a change in gene frequencies in populations. Wilson hoped to continue the work of the architects of the Modern Synthesis, who aimed at putting evolutionary biology on a firm quantitative foundation. There was good reason to deal with behaviour. The mystery of animal altruism had finally been cracked by people like William Hamilton, George Price, John Maynard Smith and Robert Trivers. A new “gene’s eye’s” perspective (made popular by George Williams’ important 1966 book Adaptation and Natural Selection) now shifted the focus from the individual organism to groups of relatives who shared genes. With the help of cost-benefit calculations, and with an eye to the genetic relatedness between the donor and recipient of an altruistic act, it was now possible to show that from a gene’s point of view it made sense for a bird, say, to sacrifice itself by letting out an alarm call, if it in this way could save a whole bunch of relatives. -

Human Sociobiology: the Essential EO Wilson
Chapter 2 Human Sociobiology: The Essential E.O. Wilson What is human nature? It is not the genes, which prescribe it, or culture, its ultimate product. Rather, human nature is something else for which we have only begun to find ready expression. It is the epigenetic rules, the hereditary regularities of mental development that bias cultural evolution in one direction as opposed to another, and thus connect the genes to culture. (E.O. Wilson, 1998) Paradigm shifts are refreshing new ways for humanity to understand the nature of their existence and their universe. Sadly, any challenge to the commonly held cur- rent order promises to introduce significant dissonance to most practitioners in a discipline. Those responses are no less dramatic in empirical practice than in the practice of literature, economics, politics, and the wide array of other disciplines. Thus, the more frequent response to the introduction of a new paradigm is disbelief, perceived threat, antagonism, and outright attack. This common occurrence was elegantly noted by Darwin in the conclusion of The Origin of Species (1859) when he acknowledged “... I by no means expect to convince experienced naturalists whose minds are stocked with a multitude of facts all viewed, during a long course of years, from a point of view directly opposite to mine”. Surely, as we recognize the sesquicentennary year of Darwin’s conception of biological evolution, we must acknowledge that it competes in most minds with all other creation myths (Durant, 1980). Paradigm shifts can also be ideological threats as much as they are threats to a prevailing world view, causing irrational emotional responses couched as intellec- tual challenges.
