Record: Where do you see the strengths of Victorian football? Grant Williams: The strength of Victorian footy is in the footprint the game has in the community. There are over 140,000 players in structured competitions around the State. The network of community leagues and clubs is signifi cant and vast; the game has developed a strong community presence and connection. The game is also fortunate that there are so many volunteers willing to support the game. Ask anyone to name the best players to have graced the field in the old VFA days and Johnson’s name will always be one of the first to be reeled off . His list of personal and team accolades ran deep, from winning a J. J. Liston Trophy to being a five-time club best-and-fairest winner with Port Melbourne, as well as a premiership player at the Borough. Post-football career – aft er a stint with South Melbourne in the VFL/AFL – his honours continued when he was named captain of the Port Melbourne Team of the Century and also received VFL life membership. He also had the state team’s best-on-ground medal named aft er him, with Williamstown’s Michael Gibbons the most recent recipient in May this year. Frank holds the unique honour of being the first (and only) VFA player to be inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame, which highlights the greatness of his VFA career combined with his time at South Melbourne in the early 1960s.
