Farewell to a VFA great Last weekend the VFA/VFL competition lost one of its greats, with the passing of Frank Johnson Snr aged 84. Ask anyone to name the best players to have graced the field in the old VFA days and Johnson’s name will always be one of the first to be reeled off . His list of personal and team accolades ran deep, from winning a J. J. Liston Trophy to being a five-time club best-and-fairest winner with Port , as well as a premiership player at the Borough. Post-football career – aft er a stint with South Melbourne in the VFL/AFL – his honours continued when he was named captain of the Port Melbourne Team of the Century and also received VFL life membership. He also had the state team’s best-on-ground medal named aft er him, with Williamstown’s Michael Gibbons the most recent recipient in May this year. Frank holds the unique honour of being the first (and only) VFA player to be inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame, which highlights the greatness of his VFA career combined with his time at South Melbourne in the early 1960s. It was fitting that one of the final football functions he attended was the annual Hall of Fame event last month. Those who attended the J. J. Liston Trophy night last year will remember Frank recounting how he found out about his 1952 Liston win – when photographers turned up on his front doorstep to tell him the news. He was then presented with the award prior to Port Melbourne’s losing VFA Grand Final appearance at Junction Oval. How times have changed, with winners now honoured at a glamorous aff air at Crown Casino in front of over 400 people. Thanks for the memories Frank. Your name will certainly be forever remembered in the competition’s history for the impression you made on our great game.
