K WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE DNRT FOUNDATION

elcome to the Dunlop 24H DUBAI 2014 It is the 9th time we are organising this event and it has Wgained credit all over the world. Few racing events have participants from 35 different countries, but we have. It is a surprise to many that this is still an amateur event. The essence of an amateur event is that the teams are on top of the priority list. They come first! And specifically, we want the teams to enjoy the event to the max.

There is a significant difference with professional events. There, the public is on top of the priority list and the participants are way down. That does not mean that the competition is less. Quite the contrary! The balance of performance system is considered very carefully. That means that in a class, totally different cars are brought together as much as possible. And there are sufficient classes so that cars of a certain group can have tremendous competition. All the teams are of equal importance to us, and so are all the classes. We do not want everybody to move over to make way for the fastest car on the track. But it also works the other way round: we don’t want the slower cars to get in the way of the faster cars, either. We demand respect from all participants for all the other participants.

We are happy and proud that the participants recognize our aim, to give priority to the pleasure of the teams. It is not easy to keep this system the way it has been set up. But we shall go for it as we are convinced that there is no better way.

If the participants are happy, then we are happy. 100% is the aim. As the saying goes, you cannot make everybody happy, but we will try nevertheless!

Huub Vermeulen President, DNRT Foundation Organiser of the race

“When I started to race go-karts I loved it from the be- ginning, so I set myself targets and I wanted to improve step-by-step and now I am racing a GT3 race car which is pretty amazing and exciting for me. When driving en- durance races you have to drive very constantly for a very long time and you need a team that works together very well, only then you have the chance to win. It is very hard and exciting to do a 24h race, because so many things can happen and it is a big challenge, but in the end if you finish with a good result the feeling is just great. Without the team it would be impossible to participate in car racing.

Motorsport is a team sport and especially during a 24h race it is important that the team in the pits makes a perfect job and that the drivers team works together very well, otherwise it is impossible to achieve any good result. In order to prepare for car racing I do a lot of endurance (running, mountain biking, swimming) and strength training. Furthermore driving go-karts is a very good training. It is the first time that I am racing on the Dubai Autodrome, so I cannot tell the most challenging parts of the track, but what is very challenging for sure is the traffic on the race track with all these different kinds of cars driving at the same time. In general I like to drive under difficult conditions so I would say driving in the rain and in the night are my specialties. My target is to finish within the Top-5 of the race. Our team Walken- horst Motorsport is very well prepared and we have a very competitive race car with the BMW Z4 GT3. We have to avoid mistakes and we need to give everything behind the wheel and so we should be able to reach our target. Tips for upcoming talent: It is important to believe in yourself, to work hard and to find your own way.” 26 years old Ride at home: BMW ALPINA D3 BITURBO Favorite sports personality: Sebastian Vettel

“I grew up in a racing family. My father is my hero. Back in the 90’s I saw him on the podium in the old DTM and it was my dream to stand there, at the top, sometime as well. Endurance races are a very special thing. You have to drive a long time and always 100% at the limit. One little mistake and you are out of the race. You can only win an endurance race when you’re a big team player. In a sprint race, you normally fight against other drivers. In an endurance race you fight with a team, with all experi- enced drivers, which you can rely on. An endurance race is a

fight against the clock.

The Dubai Autodrome has a nice and varied, but chal- lenging track because there are all kinds of slow and fast turns. And you have to be careful when you drive off the line on the sandy side because there is less grip. It surprises me to see the abundant growth of Dubai every year and the amazing atmosphere of the race between the desert and the big skyline of Dubai. In 2009 I did the famous ride on a camel because we did 3rd position overall. It was an amazing experience. The way to the podium wasn’t easy because at the last few laps our brakes were completely out of function. My target is it to ride on the famous camel to the podium again. The goal is to drive the complete 24 hours without big problems and finish the race on the top 5 or the podium. I think the Porsche GT3 R is a very good car which is always excellent in endurance races. The Fach Auto Tech team from Switzerland works like a Swiss watch and had a lot of good results in the past. And we certainly have very good drivers on the car. I will also take part in the Ger- man ADAC GT Masters championship and the Endurance races on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. My motto: Follow the way to your dream and respect your own mistakes 27 years old because you can learn from them.” Ride at home: Ford Focus RS Nick name: Basti

WWW.24HDUBAI.COM | DUNLOP 24H DUBAI 2014 37 Francis Tjia Team: #216 Modena Motorsports “ This is the first 24h race for me and the whole team. Living in Hong Kong I don’t get much of a chance to do endurance racing as most regional series in Asia are based on short sprint races of 10-15 laps. The challenge in endurance racing is completely different, much because of the team effort required. I race with my two brothers and two of my very good friends, who are also brothers. So the team dynamics is fun, interesting and difficult, as you can imagine.

Racing is something I always wanted to do from a young age (4-5 years old) but I never had the chance. Only as an adult did I find the time and money to do it, and I started as soon as the chance came up. But I was already 38 years old! I tend to qualify and start well, but can fade during races, which is something I need to work on. I think my team mate Wayne Shen and I are the quickest in our team, and we both drive well in the wet. But rain in Dubai? I doubt it! We set up the team in 2005 as a way to allow us to do a variety of races in Asia. It has grown and we are very proud of the way we work and operate, especially as all of us had never run or set up a team be- fore. We ‘made it up as we went along’ and we continue to do that. We are all very proud of Modena, having won several championships in GT Asia and Asia for non-professionals, with race wins, pole positions, and championships. Plans this year are to do our regular Porsche Carrera Cup Asia races in the new P991 car, which will be great, and we will also do a few races in GT Asia, as well as the Macau GT Cup race at the 48 years old end of the year.” Motto:”try not to f**k it up again, Francis” Ride at home: Mercedes C63 and Ferrari 458

3638 DUNLOP 24H DUBAI 2014 | WWW.24HSERIES.COM Khaled Abdulla Al Qubaisi “From my first 24h race back in 2011, I fell in love with Team: #1 Team Abu Dhabi by Black Falcon 1 endurance racing. Endurance racing needs a lot of preparation, team work, strategy and of course speed at the end to win it, all of which I really excel at. I prepare for a race by trying to be as healthy as possible all year round, and three months before the race I start exercising more often and at a higher pace. Two weeks before the race I drink as much water as I can to clean up and stay focused. I truly believe your body is a temple and you have to take care of it really well. Eat healthy, control your intake, stay away from a really unhealthy lifestyle. Once in a while you can reward yourself for behaving. A great memory that stands out is definitely from last year’s race, when we lost the car on the test day and had to find another car and fit it with our parts in one day! It was a very interesting story! Having luck on our side and finding out there is an extra spare AMG GT3 car with one of the teams, convincing them to sell it and then actually finalizing the deal and finally racing against time to fit our parts and convert it to endurance spec! Then actually going out and getting pole position from our third lap after putting everything together! And then actually winning the race! I didn’t sleep for 72 hours, first I was so unhappy with the accident, next day I was so excited from getting pole position, then it was the race and I was very tense during the whole race! I nearly broke down after the race. Our goal this year is to win for the third time in a row for sure.

I have prepared well for it, the car has been prepared well, the drivers all have won it with me before and this year we have the added motivation to win it for our team mate and close friend Sean Edwards who won it twice with me. We have launched the Daman Speed Academy last October and we are on the look out for 13-16 year 38 years old olds. So if you are 13-16 years old, like our page on Facebook and send us your results and lap times from the Ride at home: Tesla S (all electric car) kart tracks and you might be lucky and get chosen in the Lucky charm: his wife next season. “

“I have loved motorsport from babyhood. I lived in the ‘socialist’ country Czechoslovakia, and unfortunately, motorsport was only for chosen people here. This is why I have started racing very late, after the change of the political system in my country and after I started to make some money. I think sprint races are for young boys, to be an endurance driver you not only need speed, but also a lot of experience. I really like endurance races and I have run most of the 24h and endurance races world- wide: Le Mans, Daytona, Nürburgring, Spa, Tokachi, Bar- celona, Silverstone, Bathurst, Sebring, Sepang…. and of course, all editions of the 24h Dubai. It is very important to have a good physical condition when you are in endur- ance racing. To make sure my condition is good, I play ice hockey three times every week and ski in the winter. In Dubai the night is very long, but I like it!

I hope we will achieve good result in our class 997. Car Collection is a good and experienced team. We ran the 24h Nürburgring 2009 together and we finished with a Porsche Cup car in 14th position overall, not bad for Nürburgring. I will run our common championship (Slovakia,Czech, Austria, Poland and Hungary) again this year, and also the races: Mugello, Barce- lona, Hungary. Maybe I will participate in the Blancpain Endurance Series again. For upcoming talent, I do not have a special tip, all I can say is good luck!”

World-largest groundbreaking genetic research project for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), called project MinE (www.projectmine.com) Project MinE systemically interrogates and mine the human DNA of over 15000 patients and 10000 healthy controls. In this this huge pile of data we seek for genetic clues that will unravel the cause and ultimately lead to a cure for ALS. Simply stated a complex variant of "seek the differences"

ALS, or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. In ALS, nerve cells (neurons) waste away or die, and can no longer send messages to muscles. This eventually leads to muscle weakening, twitching, and an inability to move the arms, legs, and body. The condition slowly gets worse. When the muscles in the chest area stop working, it becomes hard or impossible to breathe.
