Thirdly, we don’t know if many of these young men would be planning to continue their education at uni- versity. Won’t this one year of service disrupt their enthusiasm for higher education? Already, we are suffer- ing from having too few college-educated young men in Kuwait. We don’t want to dis- courage young men from becoming bankers, engineers, doctors, lawyers, mechanics, etc. Also, some men who serve in the mili- tary adopt a mentality of total obedience to authority. So will the entire Kuwaiti nation stop questioning and criticizing its leader- ship in generations to come? Will we even have a parliament 20 years from now? Anyway, most devel- oped, industrialized nations such as Japan, UK, Germany, France and Canada either don’t have conscrip- tion or have abolished it, like Sweden. Nevertheless, it’s not a bad idea to instill some discipline and contain these young men, but I hope that the stan- dards and quality of training will be up to what Kuwait needs for now and the future. Only time will tell. SUNDAY, APRIL 30, 2017 LOCAL Local Spotlight Is Kuwait Bay safe? By Muna Al-Fuzai [email protected] he Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR) confirmed the discovery Tof significant quantities of dead fish, demanding that the Environment Public Authority pays attention to Kuwait Bay, which is the second largest incubator of fish wealth in the world, and follow up the harmful materi- als that are dumped in the sewers. Kuwait Bay, also known as ‘Jon Al-Kuwayt’ and where Kuwait city is located on its shores, is suffering from an environmental problem that needs attention and quick serious action. Kuwait Bay has several major activities existing around it, including commercial and industrial ones, and all these factors have led to the existence of pollution, thus creating major change in the features of this area and the water, which led to the death of fish in several occasions.
