Press Release: Wednesday 12 May 2021 Leading UK contemporary visual arts institutions and art schools unite against proposed government cuts to arts education ● Directors of BALTIC, Hayward Gallery, MiMA, Serpentine, Tate, The Slade, Central St. Martin’s and Goldsmiths among over 300 signatories of open letter to Education Secretary Gavin Williamson opposing 50% cuts in subsidy support to arts subjects in higher education ● The letter is part of the nationwide #ArtIsEssential campaign to demonstrate the essential value of the visual arts This morning, the UK’s Contemporary Visual Arts Network (CVAN) have brought together leaders from across the visual arts sector including arts institutions, art schools, galleries and universities across the country, to issue an open letter to Gavin Williamson, the Secretary of State for Education asking him to revoke his proposed 50% cuts in subsidy support to arts subjects across higher education. Following the closure of the consultation on this proposed move on Thursday 6th May, the Government has until mid-June to come to a decision on the future of funding for the arts in higher education – and the sector aims to remind them not only of the critical value of the arts to the UK’s economy, but the essential role they play in the long term cultural infrastructure, creative ambition and wellbeing of the nation. Working in partnership with the UK’s Visual Arts Alliance (VAA) and London Art School Alliance (LASA) to galvanise the sector in their united response, the CVAN’s open letter emphasises that art is essential to the growth of the country. -

Press Release 19 January 2017 ECVAN successful in ACE Ambition for Excellence bid for New Geographies of the East project The East Contemporary Visual Arts Network (ECVAN) is pleased to announce an application to Arts Council England’s Ambition for Excellence strategic fund has been successful. Receiving a grant of £600,000 over three years will enable ECVAN to deliver a new project: New Geographies of the East. New Geographies of the East is an ambitious programme that will deliver 10 major site- specific visual arts commissions, developed with and for communities in the East of England and with international partners from the Netherlands. The programme will be accompanied by an extensive community engagement programme and an artist and curator development initiative. The project will develop new audiences for contemporary visual art whilst strengthening and deepening relationships between artists and curators in the East of England and the Netherlands. Nine lead partners from ECVAN will collaborate with three partners in the Netherlands; The Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Casco: Office for Art, Design and Theory and If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want to be Part of Your Revolution. They will work alongside a host of additional local partners including Great Yarmouth Borough Council, Vivacity Peterborough and CPP Marketplace, Fenlands & Forest Heath to name a few. Dr Peter Hill Annotated CV 1 aa Dr Peter Hill Career summary and annotated CV Dr Peter Hill is a Scottish-born Australian. He has worked at most levels in the university system, from sessional lecturer through to Associate Professor of Fine Art (COFA/UNSW). He is currently Adjunct Professor of Fine Art at RMIT University, Melbourne. His expertise lies in studio practice, and in lecturing in art history and theory, and building links between both areas. He receives consistently high feedback from student teaching and learning surveys. As a coordinator, he has run Honours courses (University of Tasmania), Masters by Research programs (COFA/UNSW), and PhD programs (overseeing 72 PhD candidates at RMIT University). He is currently contracted for four years to Goldsmiths, University of London, to be external assessor for all of the undergraduate students at La Salle College of the Arts, Singapore (every student at La Salle, across all subjects, receives a Goldsmiths degree). He has twice been the external member on the prestigious Anne and Gordon Samstag Awards panel (Adelaide). Peter Hill is an international correspondent for Times Higher Education (London), ARTnews (New York), and Artpress (Paris). He has written for over forty journals, magazines, and broadsheet newspapers around the world, including Studio International, Frieze, The London Review of Books, Artmonthly (London); Art + Text (Sydney); Neue Bildende Kunst (Berlin) and Vault (Melbourne). He has won awards both as an artist and as a writer, including the Latimer Award for Painting at the Royal Scottish Academy, and a Saltire Award for his book Stargazing: Memoirs of a Young Lighthouse Keeper at the National Library of Scotland.
