LEADERSHIP HOLIDAY PLANT SALE SUCCESS

“The one trait that all good leaders share is the ability to get good people to work for them, and, in many cases, make them look a lot better than they really are.” Henry O. Dormann - -The Speakers Book of Quotations

As some of you know already, Ken Walmsley will be stepping down as the Club Manager at the end of this 2006/2007 curling season. This article is not a tribute to Ken’s accomplishments as our club manager (I am sure that will come later by someone who is more accomplished than I at extolling his virtues). Rather, this article is about the search for Ken’s replacement, and the way in which we want the club to be managed.

The board has struck a committee, called the Management Planning Committee, to develop a 5-year plan on how the club will be managed on a daily basis. The committee has looked The Holiday Plant Sale was successful again this year. VALENTINES DINNER THURSDAY BUSINESS WOMEN’S LEAGUE

To celebrate the Christmas season and to have a chance to enjoy each other’s company, 45 of us gathered for the annual Christmas party on December 21st.

After a short game of mystery curling, lots of great food and fun, we raised $169.50 to be put towards the capital fund. Thanks to everyone who bid on the baked goods, the silent auction and bought tickets for the raffle and elimination draw.

WOMEN’S DAYTIME SECTION NEWS

Carr’s (Phyl Galpin, Convenor/Barb Vitkauskas, Co-Convenor) The 17th Annual Carr’s Event, held during the six-week period of October 11 – December 6, was attended by 16 curlers, as well as several spares. Kay and Ron Carr have been wonderful sponsors of this event for all these years, along with Donald McBrearty of Meyer’s Coat Store and Dayton Hypes of TD/ Trust. Congratulations to the first-place winners Dianne McKenna, Verna Capson, Phyl Galpin and Cathy Townsend; second-place winners Doreen Stacey, Sandy Ronson, Lynda Reesor and Marnie Sherritt and third-place winners Jill Day, Donna Wakefield, Ruth Dutrizac and Pat Bell.

Thanks to Kay Carr, Barb Vitkauskas, Sue Starratt and Joan Cuthbert, our shopper extraordinaire!!

D. Whittaker & Associates (Lil Richardson, Convenor/Marj Dudley, Co-Convenor) A total of 56 curlers participated in this very popular and successful six-week event. It took place from October 17 to December 5, with one game at 11:15 am and six games at 1:15 pm. Congratulations to the first-place winners with six wins Joan Cuthbert, Carol Moir, Linda Karl and Marnie Sherritt. The trophy was presented by Sandy Ronson on behalf of Diane Whittaker, who was unfortunately unable to attend.

Thanks to all who helped on the final day. To our very special sponsor, Diane Whittaker, who is a member of our Club and Daytime Women’s League, a Very Special Thank You!

Friendship Day (Jean Cameron, Convenor) On November 30, the Daytime Women were encouraged to invite guests to a day of curling, fun and friendship. This event is intended to attract potential curlers to join the Daytime Women’s Section. As a result, 40 curlers participated, 19 of whom were guests. Welcome to the new members Marilyn Bonello and Elinor DesRosiers and returning members Doreen Jones and Sheila McSwiggan.

This brings our membership total to 94 regular and 11 social members.

Flip Flop Fun Day (Jean Cameron, Convenor) This event, which was scheduled to take place on December 12 was cancelled, as an insufficient number of members signed up to participate.

Christmas Party (Marj Dudley, Convenor/Penny Brown, Co-Convenor) Naughty or Nice – that was the prevailing question on Wednesday, December 13 at the Daytime Women’s Christmas Party. After coffee and fruit breads at 9:00 am, the ladies were asked to keep a close eye on each other while curling. Sad to say, there were quite a few transgressions to report at 11:30 am! Some teams ran up the score, with no regard for Christmas spirit! One woman openly cheered for the opposing team! Worst of all, one curler, who obviously had been both naughty and nice, found that her new diamond earrings were largely ignored! Well, payback came after the curlers were joined for lunch by non-curling friends. Some women won draw prizes, only to discover that Santa knew that they had been naughty (pieces of coal the reward) all received in good humour.

After lunch and the draws, the ladies thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment provided by the “In a Heartbeat” Quartet (Joyce Walter, Karen Reese, Mary Lynn Smith and Marj Dudley) dressed as old ladies – not a stretch for them! Sheila Novlan’s lovely decorations were enhanced by the ladies’ generous donations for My Sisters’ Place. Thanks to everyone who donated prizes and helped, but in particular to Penny Brown, Co-Convenor, Ann Lepage and John Spetman and to the other Christmas Angels – Carol Moir, Bev McDonald, Linda Round and Mary Reeder.

Many thanks to Phyl Galpin/Barb Vitkauskas, Lil Richardson/Marj Dudley, Jean Cameron and Marj Dudley/Penny Brown for convening these very successful events.!!

An administrative body for the men’s sport was created eight years later with the founding of the Dominion Curling Association on March 6, 1935. Thirty-two years later – in 1967, the year of Canada’s centennial – the organization adjusted to the times and changed its name to the Canadian Curling Association.

Women’s curling was launched officially with the formation of the Canadian Ladies curling Association in 1961, when the inaugural Canadian Ladies Curling Championship was played at the R.A. Centre in Ottawa.

The CCA and CLCA continued as independent organizations until they amalgamated to form the Canadian Curling Association in 1990. Today, the CCA is recognized as the administrative body for curling in Canada by Sport Canada, the Canadian Olympic Committee and the World Curling Federation. It is governed by a 10-member board of directors. Provincial and territorial associations nominate candidates to the Board, whose members are elected to five-year terms by all CCA members.
