Rectory Ramblings

Dear friends,

You will hopefully have noticed that this month’s Village Crier looks and feels a little different—this is because we have changed how we produce and print the magazine. One aspect of this change is that I have taken on the role of ‘editor’, and I’d like to particularly thank Jill Poole who has done a fantastic job of editing the magazine in recent months.

Another aspect of this change is that we are trying to increase the amount of community content which we include—although the magazine is produced by the churches it is here to serve all in our communities (as indeed are the Churches themselves!). We’d therefore love to hear from you about what is going on—reports on any activities, information about events, achievements, interesting stories, recipes, gardening tips, poems etc. would be gratefully received.

As you will see if you turn to the centre pages of the magazine, we will have a spread each month of photos from around the villages—again please do send in anything which you think might be of interest.

This changeover has not been without its wrinkles, of course. In producing this edition I have been trying to track down photos for the centre pages. A few days ago I came across a lovely photo of 3 people from Ash Bowling Club holding a trophy which they had recently won.

I got in touch to ask for permission to use the image, which was duly granted, however as I was doing the final proofread and checks on the magazine something didn’t seem quite right with the image—it turns out that they were from Ash Bowling Club in Canterbury, Kent!

Change is rarely comfortable and it certainly isn’t always smooth, but the reality of life is that everything changes—be that our relationships, our bodies, or our favourite magazines. As the old hymn puts it, "change and decay in all around I see". But it is the next line of that hymn that is worth holding on to: “O thou that changest not, abide with me”.

Amidst all the changes of the world, whether they are welcomed or regretted, God’s love for you will never change. Whatever changes are happening in your life at the moment I hope you know that God is with you and that the Church—which is also going through its fair share of changes—is there for you.

So amidst the changes taking place on these pages, if you have any other ideas for ways we can improve the Crier, or if there is anything you think we’ve missed or should have included, please let us know about them.

So let’s celebrate all that is going on in our communities—the old and the new—and let’s make the Village Crier the place where those stories are shared. Benefice Notices Bishop Mark leaving

The Bishop of (seen here at the 2016 Family Day) has announced that he has chosen to leave his role for a return to parish ministry in Exeter Diocese. The Right Revd Mark Rylands has served as the Area Bishop of Shrewsbury since October 2009 but has decided the time is right to move with his wife Mandy to the south-west where they have previously lived, served and have family. The popular 56-year-old will continue as Bishop of Shrewsbury until July when there will be a special farewell service. He will then take up his new role as a Priest-in-Charge of the Ashburton and Moorland Team in Exeter Diocese, where he will also be an Assistant Bishop. He said: “It has been a huge privilege to serve the people of and as the Anglican Bishop of Shrewsbury. Working in the Diocese of has been an enriching experience and I am grateful to Bishop Jonathan Gledhill for giving me this opportunity back in 2009. His wise and gentle leadership helped foster unity in a diverse diocese. I have also enjoyed working with Bishop Michael as he has introduced a challenging and compelling vision: inviting people to ‘come follow Christ in the footsteps of St Chad’. Many in this country are not sure where Lichfield, Telford or Shropshire is. We are slightly off the beaten track, slightly unknown. How- ever, I know that a lot of good comes out of these places – I have been fortunate enough to live and work with the people here. I have been blessed to experience the company of some excellent colleagues who are prepared to pull together for the sake of God’s Mission in our communities. “It will be sad to leave. And for some it may seem a surprise move. But, for me, I have sensed God’s beckoning to serve as a parish priest again. For the last 16 years, as both Diocesan Missioner and Area Bishop, much of my ministry has been to encourage, challenge and help churches and church leaders to embody and share the Good News of Jesus Christ in the local community. I have heard God calling me now to ‘go and walk the talk’.

Wood needed for Hope House Hospice Eric Williams from Tilstock Church is raising money for Hope House Hospice by carving and making various items out of wood which are sold locally and at some of their hospice shops—he has raised over £1700 to date. However to do this he needs wood to make things from. If you have any spare bits of wood that you think he could use, whether that’s old skirting, pieces of solid wood, disused furniture etc. (anything except old fence posts!) please let him know on (01948) 661851 and he will arrange to collect it.

News from Calverhall Big Breakfast 2018 It’s incredible to think that the Big Breakfast in Calverhall is in its 6th year! As in previous years, the team came together to cook, serve and clear away in a seamless operation that kind of “just happens”. Without these wonderful volunteers not a bean would get cooked, so we owe them all a really big Thank You. Morrisson’s, Shepley’s, The Olde Jack and The Castle all showed great support for the event – so Thank You to them too. The biggest Thank You goes to all the wonderful people who came and ate their breakfast and enjoyed a very social event on a chilly but bright Sunday morning. We raised a massive £910—thank you all! Same time, same place next year? Oh yes! A massive thank you is also due to the working party who cleared and tidied the Church yard of Holy Trinty Church. Also big thanks to Keith and Stuart of K and S Plantscapes for building a compost bin. We are planning to leave the grass to grow near the vestry as wildlife habitat and to cut it in August. It will be interesting to see what wild flowers are pre- sent. There will be lots of events in Calverhall this year – keep your eyes peeled for more details to follow. Here’s just a taster… Rogation Sunday Service at Manor Farm (thanks to Tracey & Alex Pyke) Gorse Farm Sunday Lunch (Thanks to Simon & Jane Latter) Cloverley Hall Open Day “Celebrating 50 Years” Afternoon Tea & BBQ Ride and Stride, Calverhall & Ightfield Family Day (2nd September) Calverhall Flower & Produce Show, Harvest Festival– plus many more… If you have a community event that you would like publicised on this page, please contact @calverhall on Facebook or email [email protected]

News from Ash We continue to make good progress towards buying and running the White Lion as a Community Pub. Our big news is that we have now appointed the Manager and the Chef who will both be central to making our Community Pub a success. Graham Holroyd will take on the role of Pub Manager. He and his wife Anne will be known to many of you as they successfully ran The Old Town Vaults in Whitchurch. Their expertise and passion for the local community will be a great asset and I am delighted that Graham and Anne are keen to be part of the community in Ash and that they will be living in the accommodation above the pub. Our Chef will be Ben Foulger who brings great enthusiasm and a passion for home cooked, locally sourced menus and is determined to build on the White Lion’s reputation for great food. Ben is currently the Sous Chef in a well known pubin Chester. Growing up he lived at Brown Moss, he still lives locally and is committed to the community. Both Graham and Ben were appointed through an open and fair recruitment process with the involvement of a number of members of the Management Committee and representatives of the Community. Our decision was unanimous, and I am sure you will all extend a warm welcome to Ben and Graham when they take up their posts. We are keen to firm up a completion date for taking over the pub and both sets of Solicitors are working towards a date in mid-April. We will keep you informed. Our big focus now is getting ready to run the White Lion; - from initial refurbishment to insurance, registration and health and safety and many more aspects, we need to have all plans in place and there is a lot of detailed planning and work taking place. Please watch out for further updates and requests for help and how you can get more involved. As always, many thanks for all your support – it really is appreciated. News from Adderley

ROSIE’S RAMBLINGS Welcome to this first edition of Rosie’ Ramblings. The intention is to report on the previous months activities and draw attention to forthcoming events in the Parish and further afield in the AMICA benefice. The A529 which bisects the village has received a lot of attention recently. The 20th of February 2018 was “Road Victory Day” for Adderley. , after much nagging by The Parish Council, finally repaired the road near the school and only the line marking remains to be completed. For many months they had tried to fudge the issue on the cheap by filling in the potholes with tarmac which only reappeared in a very short time. The only downside on the day was the one and only diversion sign which directed traffic down the Norton-in-Hales road and some vehicles ended up making U turns in Rob & Hilda Clare’s farm yard! Continuing on the road theme The Parish Council has formed a road sub committee in order to “have all our ducks in a row” prior to the major revamp of the A529 (one of the 50 most dangerous roads in ). A traffic and road questionnaire has been widely circulated in the village and a good response has been received. We have now invested in a Speed Sign powered by a solar panel which is already slowing the traffic down. The sign can be moved and it is intended to cover the whole village and not just the A529. The sign records the day, time and the speed of the vehicle and this data will be used to reinforce our request for traffic calming measures. There will also be spot checks with police speed cameras which will result in points and fines or a speed awareness course.

Readers will be pleased to hear that the Parish Council has recommended a 0% increase in the Adderley Parish Council precept for Council Tax in the year 2018/19. Please visit our website www.adderleyparish.co.uk for all our news and events. On a very cold and icy March 1st, a coffee morning was held in aid of Saint Peter’s Church, at the lovely home of Mrs Nina Jones, Hatherton Manor. Despite the artic weather the event was well attended and it raised over £400 for church funds. Grateful thanks go to Nina and family as well as the helpers, cake bakers and all those who donated items for sale. The success of the event was also attributable to the willingness of everyone to purchase goods. Well done all those who contributed in any way The Church AGM will be held on the 9th April in the village Hall at 7.30pm .It is an open meeting and all residents are welcome to attend. We desperately need new faces to help in maintaining our over 1000 year old presence as a place of worship in the village. Even if you do not attend church services your help will be more than welcome. We depend upon gift aid to balance the books and we are looking for a volunteer, in the first place, to shadow the treasurer. Whilst we have a good number of regular attendees at our services they alone cannot finance the total costs incurred, we depend on those who wish to see the church remain active for their baptisms, weddings and finally funerals to assist its continued availability by making a gift aided donation. Come to the AGM to learn more about the costs of maintaining our lovely church This column will hopefully appear each month but material is needed and welcomed from anyone in Adderley who has topics to air.

On Wednesday March 8th rare Hawfinches were seen feeding on our yew trees in the churchyard, more details next month

Calverhall & Ightfield WI Thursday evening took us off to WI for our shared meeting, last year they came to us, this year we visited them. It was a smashing night, we received a great welcome. The speaker was a 'Bodger' (that’s a Story Teller) called Simon Martin, he told of how he had become a story teller. telling a wide variety of tales, causing much laughter, but most had a twist in the tale. This was followed by a lovely supper, then cakes in an abundance as only the WI know how! Since our last meeting 4 of our ladies went to visit the Whitchurch Community Hospital with 18 twiddlemuffs they had made (see picture in centre pages), they were given a tour of the hospital where they could see how the twiddlemuffs would be used. Staff encourage members to knit knee blankets and fingerless gloves. If you fancy learning to knit or just want to use up spare wool, it would be a wonderful cause. Next month’s speaker will be Chef James Sherwin of Wild Shropshire who has recently appeared on BBC Countryfile, he will talk about foraging for local ingredients used in his dishes. Anyone who would like to hear him speak would be most welcome. Other things happening in the WI include a Spring Ramble, a trip to Malvern Show, a Sports Weekend, a visit to Renishaw Hall- known as The House of Books, Canoeing down the , a Skittles Evening, Panto at Theatre Severn, an Archery Taster Afternoon, a Canal Trip, a day at Chester Races and a book club meeting every other month. We are a small but vibrant WI with an enthusiastic committee that are keen to organise events that the ladies of our community fancy doing. See our Facebook page (@CalverhallandIghtfieldWI) for more about what we do. We meet monthly at Calverhall Village Hall 7.15pm Coffee Bar At Adderley Village Hall Coffee/Tea & Cake served 10am – 12am Last Friday of Every Month

A Prayer for Springtime

Let us praise God for his gift of spring, a time of new life and new beginnings. For the warm sunshine, blue skies, and longer brighter days. The coming of the summer birds and their joyous songs, the colour and scent of flowers, the fresh green of bush and tree. As the earth awakes from winter’s gloom, in field and forest near and far, Lord touch our eyes that we may read your mysteries in the wonders of your spring we pray. Amen.
