Roberts presented information to the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January of 1922 that fundamentally challenged the entire premise of their religious beliefs. New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history. -

Berryville From: Utah Place Names
Berryville from: Utah Place Names BERRYVILLE* (Kane County). See Glendale* below. GLENDALE* (Kane County) is on US-89 in Long Valley along the upper Virgin River. Four miles south is Orderville*. After being settled in 1862 by a party of settlers led by John and William Berry from Kanarraville*, Glendale was named Berryville* as the first settlement in the valley. At that time, Long Valley was called Berry Valley. Of those first settlers, Robert Berry and his wife Isabella were murdered by the Indians, and in 1866 Berryville was abandoned. In 1871, members of the Muddy Mission in Nevada resettled Long Valley. Led by James Leithead, the group settled on the old Berryville townsite and renamed it Glendale because of the beautiful surroundings. Another version of the naming of Glendale states that the name came from their leader and first bishop, who was reminded of his home in Scotland. A HISTORY OF 'Beaver County Martha Sonntag Bradley UTAH CENTENNIAL COUNTY HISTORY SERIES A HISTORY OF 'Beaver County Martha Sonntag Bradley The settlement of Beaver County began in February 1856 when fifteen families from Parowan moved by wagon thirty miles north to Beaver Valley. The county was created by the Utah legislature on 31 January 1856, a week before the Parowan group set out to make their new home. However, centuries before, prehistoric peoples lived in the area, obtaining obsidian for arrow and spear points from the Mineral Mountains. Later, the area became home to Paiute Indians. Franciscan Friars Dominguez and Escalante passed through the area in October 1776. The Mormon settlement of Beaver devel oped at the foot of the Tushar Mountains. In 1859 the community of Minersville was es tablished, and residents farmed, raised live stock, and mined the lead deposits there. In the last quarter of the nineteenth century the Mineral Mountains and other locations in the county saw extensive mining develop ment, particularly in the towns of Frisco and Newhouse. Mining activities were given a boost with the completion of the Utah South ern Railroad to Milford in 1880. The birth place of both famous western outlaw Butch Cassidy and inventor of television Philo T. Farnsworth, Beaver County is rich in history, historic buildings, and mineral treasures. History of the Church in Phoenix Arizona
History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Phoenix, Arizona Mormon pioneers first settled near Mesa in 1877, but it wasn’t until 1912 that the first official Church meeting took place, when a group of nine members gathered for the first time in a room above Donofrio’s Confectionery in Phoenix. The small congregation continued to meet in various places, including a laundry shop and over a bicycle shop, until the first Church building was constructed in 1918. It was located at Seventh Street and Monroe and was built at a cost of $18,000. Two hundred ninety-eight members attended the dedication of the building, where J. Robert Price was called as the first bishop (the leader of a congregation). By 1927 membership of the Church had grown in the Salt River Valley to the point where a temple, the first in the state, was constructed in Mesa. The Mesa Arizona Temple is still in operation today and anchors a historic district, which has predominantly retained its residential character. The Church has a legacy of humanitarian service in Arizona. During the Great Depression in the 1930s, many businesses experienced great financial stress, and many failed. Good Samaritan Hospital, one of two Phoenix hospitals, did not escape this fate. Hospital superintendent J. O. Sexson needed $75,000 to keep the hospital open and turned to the Church for the needed funds. He subsequently traveled to Utah and met with senior Church leaders, including President Heber J. Grant, who said, “Mr. Sexson, you have a very worthy cause, but we don’t loan money. -

Silent Film Music and the Theatre Organ Thomas J. Mathiesen Introduction Until the 1980s, the community of musical scholars in general regarded film music-and especially music for the silent films-as insignificant and uninteresting. Film music, it seemed, was utili tarian, commercial, trite, and manipulative. Moreover, because it was film music rather than film music, it could not claim the musical integrity required of artworks worthy of study. If film music in general was denigrated, the theatre organ was regarded in serious musical circles as a particular aberration, not only because of the type of music it was intended to play but also because it represented the exact opposite of the characteristics espoused by the Orgelbewegung of the twentieth century. To make matters worse, many of the grand old motion picture theatres were torn down in the fifties and sixties, their music libraries and theatre organs sold off piecemeal or destroyed. With a few obvious exceptions (such as the installation at Radio City Music Hall in New (c) 1991 Indiana Theory Review 82 Indiana Theory Review Vol. 11 York Cityl), it became increasingly difficult to hear a theatre organ in anything like its original acoustic setting. The theatre organ might have disappeared altogether under the depredations of time and changing taste had it not been for groups of amateurs that restored and maintained some of the instruments in theatres or purchased and installed them in other locations. The American Association of Theatre Organ Enthusiasts (now American Theatre Organ Society [ATOS]) was established on 8 February 1955,2 and by 1962, there were thirteen chapters spread across the country. -
