Coming Soon: Good News Story Greg's winter wonderland Extract of editorial published on 28/12/2006 in North West Evening Mail ENTERPRISING teenager Greg Curtis is beaming with pride after his dream of having an ice rink for his community became a reality. The 13-year-old toiled for months to gain funding for the Christmas event. And his hard work paid off when Greengate Infant School car park was transformed into a winter wonderland. More than 300 children skated all day for free last Saturday, thanks to Greg’s bright idea. Now community leaders, friends and family are thanking the bright spark for his hard work. Along with friends he had to battle with bureaucracy and fill out forms to get £1,200 from Cumbria County Council’s Youth Opportunity Fund to pay for the hire of the rink. Greg, from Jarrow Street, Barrow, said: “It’s been difficult. I had to phone up loads of places. “I had to write a booklet, fill forms and phone loads of ice rinks and all were booked up. But one said we could have it for a day. “It has changed me. People used to think I was a rebel. Now not as much.” Greg’s idea came about after he started attending The Four Groves Community Association’s youth nights, organised by Young Cumbria. The Manchester United fan is now planning to organise a summer fair. Wendy Phizacklea, from Young Cumbria, said: “He is one of the estate’s characters and for him to do this is a major achievement. “He was so committed throughout. He stuck with it.” Youth Opportunity Fund Youth Capital Fund The closing date for the next round of Youth Opportunity Fund and Youth Capital Fund is Tuesday 6th February 2007. Hobbies: I love nature… anything that gets me outside really. Greatest Achievement: I have on occasion had the odd inkling to jump out of aeroplanes (with a parachute attached to my back of course). Each time I do it I have a great sense off achievement… probably because I’m not right. The best thing that’s ever happened to me though , is seeing the birth of my son Tom . Now that was a big wow moment….well done Kate. First Job: Paper round. £4 a week plus all the sweets we could rob!!! Well, four pounds a week…what did they expect! Worst Job: A curry powder factory in Germany called Fuck’s Curries!!! Honestly that’s what it was called. I used to work on the schute which was a big thick tube that came out of the ceiling and spewed out (by the ton) curry, mustard and if I caught a bad shift garlic powder. I had to catch in super sized Hessian sacks and the powder got everywhere. Ugh! Favorite sport: Fishing Favourite Film: Withnail and I. Favourite Music : Dylan and Bowie. Favourite Food: a good Indian curry. I got over it! Other Information you may find useful………………….. BM Schools Out!
