A propor- tion of children will become lesbian or gay adults, there will be gay and lesbian teachers in our schools and inevitably, school students will want to knov,;:lore about the sexual options available to them. Also, as the editor, Debbie Epstein points out, lesbian and gay issues are currently receiving a significant amount of attention in the media and in academia. However, Epstein points out also that with notable exceptions (see her introductory chapter) such issues have been bypassed in the world of education. This is partly due to Section 28 of the Local Government Act (1986) and more recent interpretations (e.g.. Ofsted 1992) emphasizing the prohibition of the 'promotion' of homosexuality in teaching or resources (though both Stacey and Epstein argue that Section 28 actually advanced rather than diminished lesbian and gay issues); and partly due to individ- uals working in education wanting to avoid issues which they may find difficult or disturbing. This timely book seeks to fill the gap in educational thinking about lesbian and gay issues by portraying the complex set of debates, arguments and experiences around sexuality and schooling at the same time as pointing up other points of dif- ference (such as 'race' and ethnicity) as important to the discus- sion. Thus contributors to the volume tell stories of distress and victimization and also of achievement and support. They make suggestions for challenging prejudice and homophobia through the curriculum and through policy and they reflect on Series Editor's Introduction the place of lesbian and gay issues in theoretical debates about equality and 'difference' in education. Epstein argues that as well as the 'enormous problems' sur- rounding such issues, 'tremendous progress' has been made in uncovering the experience of being lesbian or gay in British culture as a means of combating prejudice against people with different sexualities from the claimed heterosexual norm (see introductory chapter). In my view, this book deserves to be widely readby students, teachers, parents and policy-makers as a testimony to that progress and also as a means by which any future gains may be enhanced and sustained. Steven Simpson, who had Asperger’s syndrome, a speech impairment and epilepsy, was covered in self-tanning oil and set alight in the early hours of 23 June last year. Jordan Sheard, 20, was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court after pleading guilty to manslaughter. A judge heard how as Simpson became more drunk, homophobic insults were scrawled on his arm and stomach, told to strip to his boxers and encouraged to dance around. After 2am, a partygoer took tanning oil from Simpson’s bedroom and poured it over the host. The court heard Sheard then held a cigarette lighter to Simpson’s groin, and instantly the highly flammable liquid caught alight and flames engulfed his body. DAILY MAIL URGED TO FIRE RICHARD LITTLEJOHN AFTER TRANS TEACHER'S DEATH Primary school transgender teacher Lucy Meadows was found dead in Lancashire, England after a tabloid revealed her ‘shock’ story "I was lucky to have a supportive head," she wrote, "but I think I'd have done it here regardless as I couldn't put it off any longer and I have family and financial commitments as well. Scottish Fiction’s Queer Communities Carole Jones Abstract This chapter examines representations of queer groups in Scottish fiction to investi- gate whether the concept of community engaged with in these texts succeeds in pro- ducing a radical imagining of what Iris Marion Young calls an ‘openness to unassimilated otherness’ that resists the emerging homonormativity of gay identity. Keywords Queer – homosexuality – gay – community – Scottish fiction – drag queen – identity – homonormativity – Ali Smith – Luke Sutherland This chapter explores the presence of gay communities in Scottish fiction. Though a relatively recent phenomenon, these representations are ambivalent towards closed or strictly bounded social groupings and identities, and illus- trate uncertainties for queer people arising from the concept of community. In the early days of gay liberation, community delineated a liberatory alternative space to counter the often violent exclusions enacted by family, kinship, nation and other social formations. However, the interpellation to identity of such communities inevitably produces its own constraints and limitations, con- structing closures as well as opportunities for relations. After studying at London's New College of Speech and Drama (now part of Middlesex University), where she received a teaching diploma, Sanders studied counselling on alcohol-related problems as well as Gestalt Therapy and contribution training. She also holds qualifications on dealing with stress and trauma. Since 1967 she has been a teacher, tutor and lecturer on women's studies, drama and fighting homophobia in schools, universities and other organisations, both in London and in Sydney, Australia. Since 1984 Sanders has worked as a management consultant and trainer for the public and voluntary sector. A former member of the LGBT Advisory Group to the Metropolitan Police, she was also an independent adviser to the London Criminal Justice Board, and is a member of the Hate Crime Independent Advisory Group for the Ministry of Justice. She was part of the National Union of Teachers LGBT working party (since 1999), a member of the Southwark anti-Homophobic Forum (which she joined in 1997) and a consultant to the Crown Prosecution Service, helping to produce national policy on prosecuting homophobic crimes effectively. In 1996 she co-founded, with Paul Patrick, a consultancy called Chrysalis which delivers training around equal opportunity issues – particularly anti- heterosexism.

But these protests were not taken seriously by any- one I knew: acknowledged as a nuisance, certainly, but also judged to be very good for publicity in the competitive Festival fringe. 2. At ‘How Was it for You? British Theatre Under Blair’, a conference held in London on 9 December 2007, the presentations of directors Nicholas Hytner, Emma Rice and Katie Mitchell, writers Mark Lawson, Kwame Kwei-Armah, Tanika Gupta and Mark Ravenhill, and actor and Equity Rep Malcolm Sinclair all included reflection upon issues of censorship, the policing of per- formance or indirect forms of constraint upon content. T: … looking as a designer, you know, at the London gay organisations, a lot of the logos weren’t up to scratch. They didn’t represent the companies that well, and so I approached, I can’t remember which one I did first, I think it was Schools Out, it was an organisation run by Sue Saunders and Paul Patrick, and I said “Look, I like what you’re doing, I really sort of believe in getting the word out to schools but can I look at your communications design, obviously free of charge” and that was it. Started sort of working locally with a lady who I didn’t realise was quite so famous at the time, called Linda Bellos, who used to live just round the corner in Nunhead, and we’d met at some LGBT event and give each others lift home, and Linda and her partner, Caroline Jones were running Equality and Diversity programmes, and it matched up with my passion for getting – if you’re going to produce a poster or if you’re going to produce a piece of artwork how can somebody who’s blind see this? Or how can somebody who’s visually impaired see this? And in the same way applying that logic to, you know, “How, if you’re going to produce a poster for the Home Office …” We did a lot of domestic violence information … I used to do a lot of work with an organisation called Broken Rainbow, and we used to produce posters and information leaflets that were targeting the LGBT community but in a way that wasn’t … so there wasn’t rainbows plastered on everything, and there wasn’t talking as a straight organisation to a gay person or a lesbian person, it was about actually using their language and coming across as, you know “We understand” and that led on to doing quite a successful work with the Met Police.
