Dear OHSBCA Members, Welcome to the 66th annual OHSBCA State Clinic, January 19th, 20th and 21st of 2017. You are a member of the 2nd largest coaches associations in the United States. Many high school coaches and college speakers have said that this is one of the best clinics in the nation. I am hoping that you are able to take something from this year’s clinic and go back to your school to make the young men in your program better this coming year and for future players as well. With my involvement on this board for the past 6 years, I have seen the giant steps forward the association has made. It is my honor to give back as Director of the 2017 State Clinic. This venue at the Hyatt Regency and Columbus Convention Center is just one example of what a first class operation we all are here to witness. If there is anything that any of our 24 board members or the Hyatt personnel can do to make your experience more enjoyable, please let us know. Your board is committed to making this a most enjoyable and rewarding experience, and represents you throughout the entire year. We have the opportunity to recognize and honor three (3) of our own with their induction into our OHSBCA Hall of Fame this weekend: I truly hope that you take the opportunity to attend our banquet on Friday noon in the Ballroom to honor these three great men who have given so much to their schools, community and our association. There are also many other awards given to your peers and scholarships to the children of our members; you should not miss this banquet. I have taken great pride in putting together a great lineup of clinic speakers who have a variety of messages that will help you to get back into “baseball mode” as we get closer to our seasons approaching. We continue to learn and seek out information and I feel that this year’s speakers will truly help all of us grow our players and build a stronger program. The list of speakers for this year include: Joe Wilkins-Tiffin University Matt Talarico – Wright State University Ty Neal – University of Cincinnati John Emme – Corona Del Mar HS (CA) Greg Beals- The Ohio State University Rich Hofman – Stoneman Douglas HS (FL) Brian Meyer – Butler University Robert Smith – Ohio University Brian McGee – Wittenberg University Jim Richardson – Tiffin University Andrew Busch – Professor, Ohio Wesleyan Tyler Mott – Ohio Wesleyan University Blake Allen – Depauw University Tom Held – Defiance HS Kris Knapp-Ontario HS, Trainer Mike Birkbeck – Kent State University Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the entire OHSBCA Board of Directors for their dedication and hard work to this organization. 4 2016 OHSBCA President, Don Schone, Watkins Memorial High School Don Schone is currently the President of the OHSBCA. Don Schone has been the Head Baseball Coach at Watkins Memorial High School since 2001. In 16 seasons as a head coach his teams have won over 200 games and reached the Division II state final four games in 2006. Coach Schone has been a part of the OHSBCA Board for the past eight years. He began as a Central district representative before being elected to the Executive Board and served as the 2016 Clinic Director, the 2015 Exhibit Hall Director, and the 2014 Mizuno All-Star Series Director. Prior to his time on the state board he served as President of the Central District Baseball Coaches Association. Coach Schone is a gradu- ate of Watkins Memorial High School and was a member of the 1992-1997 Bowling Green State University baseball team. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Educational Leadership in 1999 from Ohio Dominican University and has his Masters degree from Ashland University in Sports Education. He lives in Pataskala with his wife, Deanna, who is a Sr. Paralegal at the Hayes Law Offices in Pataskala. They have two sons, Zach who is a Junior, and Parker who is an 8th grader; both attend Watkins Schools.

Welcome from OHSBCA President, Don Schone Welcome to the 2017 Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association Clinic. It has been a great honor to serve as the president of one of the top baseball coaches’ associations in the country. While being involved with this organization, I have increased my knowledge of the game of baseball as well as met new and interesting people. The great coaches I have had a chance to meet and listen to have helped me grow as a person. The greatest part of this journey has been meeting new friends associated with the game of baseball; I would never have had this opportunity had I not gotten involved with this organization. This year Tom Neubert has done a great job of putting together the clinic and Rob Lavengood has worked hard on lining up vendors for the exhibit hall. Special thanks go out to all of our Executive Board members and the district reps for not only the work you’ve done, but most importantly for your professionalism. This has made my time as a president go very smoothly. Please, when you get a chance, thank them for all the work they do throughout the year. I want to also thank Pat Ewing for filling in the last few years of our State Clinic Registra- tions. The clinic could not run without her and I thank you for filling in and helping us. Lastly, I want to thank our host, The Hyatt Regency, and all our sponsors who make it possible for us to put on such a first-class clinic and do many wonderful things for members and their players. Please enjoy the weekend; I hope you pick up at least one thing you can take back to your program to improve it. Good luck to all of you this spring.

22 John Emme Corona Del Mar HS Thursday 10:00-10:50pm “Parental Disappointment Lawsuits: One Coach’s Story” (Regency Ballroom)

"Parental Disappointment Lawsuits: One Coach’s Story"

Coach John Emme is in his 20th season as the head coach at Corona del Mar High School. He has a career record of 295-215. The Sea Kings made the C.I.F. playoffs in sixteen of the nineteen seasons of Emme’s tenure. Highlights include five league championships, a 2009 trip to the semi-finals as well as the 1999 and 2004 C.I.F. Division IV Championship. In 1999 the Sea Kings finished the year ranked #1 in the state Division III and were named “Team of the Year” for the state of California Division III by Cal Hi Sports. Coach Emme was named Daily Pilot “Coach of the Year”, C.I.F. Division IV “Coach of the Year”, as well as Cal Hi Sports State “Coach of the Year” for medium sized schools. In 2005, he was named regional “Coach of the Year” by the American Baseball Coaches Association at the National Conference in Nashville in 2005.

Coach Emme was born and raised in Glendale and was a 1982 graduate of St. Francis High School. He was a three year Varsity letterman in baseball and was All-League/All-Area pitcher his senior year. He was also named the Glendale Connie Mack League Most Valuable Player in 1982. He was the first member of the class of 1982 to be inducted into the St. Francis High School Sports Hall of Fame. He earned his B.A. and teaching credential at U.C. Davis where he was a three year Varsity letterman on the two-time Northern Coast Athletic Conference Champion baseball team. His 1985 U.C. Davis team was named “Team of the Decade” and placed in the U.C. Davis Baseball Hall of Fame.

John began his coaching career at U.C. Davis where he was assistant coach for the 1986-1987 season. The following year he was named the head coach at Underwood High School in Underwood, Iowa. He coached there for three seasons and his final year he was named the Southwest Iowa Conference “Coach of the Year”.

John currently teaches Psychology and Human Sexuality at CDM and has his Master’s degree in Education from Cal. State San Bernardino.

In 2001, Coach Emme became embroiled in a nationally publicized "disappointment" lawsuit from a disgruntled baseball parent. During the four years that followed, Coach Emme made appearances on "HBO Real Sports", CNN, "Good Morning America", and "The O'Reilly Factor" to name a few. His story was also featured on the front page of the "Collegiate Baseball" newspaper as well as the “L.A. Times” and “Orange County Register.” By January 2005, Coach Emme had defended himself against two frivolous lawsuits by the same disgruntled parent and filed a counter suit against the same man for "slander, libel and malicious prosecution".

For the last eight years Coach Emme has been a guest lecturer, telling his story about the lawsuit to various groups of coaches. He currently guest lectures for Concordia University and Azusa Pacific University. This is his story.

Biography: Andrew is an assistant professor at Ohio Wesleyan University, and his expertise lies in the field of health and fitness in athletes.

Andrew was a catcher in the San Francisco Giants organization for 3 years, playing as high as AA. He became passionate about injury prevention during his undergraduate coursework, which carried into his Master’s program in exercise science. His doctoral research involved studying pre-participation movement screens in relation to injury prevention in baseball players. His research proved strong cor- relations between identifiable deficits in movement with an increased risk of overuse injuries through- out a competitive season in collegiate baseball.

In addition to teaching, Andrew has worked in the fitness industry since 2004 helping athletes of all abilities from professional ranks down to youth levels achieve their athletic goals.

Presentation Description: Attendees of this session will learn: u The amount of stress an arm undergoes during pitching- the most violent motions in all of sports. u The importance of pre-season movement screening in baseball players to identify those who have a higher risk of arm injuries. u What to do with baseball players who have developed sport-specific movement dysfunctions in their upper extremities. u The 5 best corrective exercises to restore functional movement will be covered to illustrate how players can lower their injury risk in a very practical time period before a season begins. u Warm-up routines to effectively ensure all the muscles used for throwing are properly prepared. u Other training considerations for baseball players

Learning Objectives: 1) Understand the cumulative stresses a throwing shoulder must withstand 2) Appreciate the importance of screening athletes to identify those at a higher risk 3) Discover the best corrective strategies for improving shoulder function and thus reducing the risk of injuries

VII. GIVE YOUR PLAYERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE THE HERO 37 Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association 2016 ASSISTANT COACH OF THE YEAR AWARDS

CENTRAL – Jay Smith (Hilliard Darby High School), Jay has had a tremendous positive impact on our program, both on and off the field. Off the field, Jay serves as a leader for our players, one who is positive and upbeat when the situation calls for it, as well as one who can demonstrate the ability to show intensity when necessary. On the field, Jay has served as our hitting coach and has taken that role to a new level. Under Jay’s instruction, our program has been able to bring home many championships, including OCC championships in 2007, 2008, 2015, and 2016. In addition, we have won District titles in 2007, 2008, and 2013 and finished as Regional runner-up in 2013.

EAST – Mike Burr (River View), a longtime River View Assistant Baseball Coach, has dedicated his life to being a role model for his family, students, and players. Coach Burr began his teaching and coaching career at River View in 1979. Prior to his retirement in 2014, he taught special education, Ohio Work Education (OWE), and Mentorship in his 35-year teaching career in the River View Local School District. In addition to his teaching, Mike served as an assistant baseball coach until 1983 and rejoined the baseball coaching staff in 1996. He served as the junior varsity coach for several years and has been the varsity assistant since 2007. In baseball, Mike’s work with the pitching staff and his commitment to teaching players the fundamentals of the game has led to River View’s success on the field. He treats players firmly but always with respect. He shows them how to tackle problems, how to treat others, how to win humbly, and how to lose while fighting to the end with dignity. The young men in the program are better equipped to succeed in life because of Coach Burr’s influence.

NORTHEAST – Bill Gearhart (Wadsworth High School), During Bill’s tenure, Wadsworth has seen some of the best pitching numbers in the programs history. As a head coach, I can’t even begin to put into words how valuable Bill’s services are to our kids and our program. I don’t believe our program would have had the success it has had over the last several years without him. He is dedicated a coach as you will find at the high school level. He always makes time for his players whether it’s staying after practice during the season or working with pitchers during the off-season. Bill is a coach that is in it for all the right reasons, to help build a winning program, to help develop our players into great ballplayers and most importantly, even better young men.

NORTHWEST – Mike Hart (Tiffin Calvert Catholic), What Coach Hart does for this school is beyond any award that can be presented in his honor. As stated earlier, Coach Hart has volunteered 29 years of his life to help the athletes of Calvert Catholic to become fine young men. He was the sole reason three times this year we were able to play after over two inches of rain the night before. On his way to drop his grandson off at school Coach would drive by the field to check the conditions. If there was water on it he would come back within the hour and clear the water off. He would then continue to check that progress throughout the morning till he felt it was safe to run our machines over it to break it up. He took great pride in our field and loved to keep it in pristine condition.

SOUTHEAST – Tim Sutton (Wheelersburg High School), Tim has been with our program for the past seven years and has been a vital component to our program’s overall success. He is willing to come early and stay late to help our young men achieve success both on and off the field, and is even willing to get in his car without reservation and scout an upcoming opponent during a tournament run. I witness his impact on our young people every day during the school year because he teaches 7th grade mathematics right across the hallway from me, and he is a great resource to our staff members due to the professionalism that he carries himself with on a consistent basis. Tim was born a Wheelersburg Pirate and his dedication and love for our community is gratifying to witness.

SOUTHWEST – Jim Johnson (Tippecanoe), Jim has been an assistant coach at Tippecanoe High School since 1998. He oversees our entire pitching staff from the freshman team to the Varsity team. His knowledge of pitching cannot be measured. He stays updated on all the trends in pitching but has a great old school mentality. He has developed a pitching staff each and every year as we have not had to rely on just one or two pitchers to get through a season. It is not uncommon for us to have 4 or 5 pitchers every year at the varsity level with multiple wins. Our pitchers, during Jim’s tenure, have enjoyed his enthusiasm for the game and have learned to compete day in and day out. Jim is a great teacher of the game and his pitchers have a great deal of respect for him. He has made a tremendous impact on our program.

Division I: Head Coach: Tim Thomas - Pickerington North High School Career Head Coaching Experience 11 Years Number of years at Pickerington North: 11 years 2016 Record 23-9 Pickerington North H.S Record 239-83 Overall Coaching Record 239-83

2016 Highlights: All I can say is “Why Not Us!” What an incredible feeling to be part of a State Championship Team. This Year’s group was as Special of a group as I have ever been fortunate enough to coach. Tremendous leadership, where individual stats and goals were traded in for the Team stats and Goals, led our tournament run. We started the season with only 5 returning Varsity players, but a solid group of 10 seniors, who quickly jelled into a “Team,” was key to our Success. The concept of “Why Not Us” really took off after a rough stretch of losing 4 out of 5 games to finish our tough OCC schedule. We entered the tournament looking to Win One game at a time and the players focusing on just doing their “job.” The players started to really believe in themselves and more importantly each other. Winning the First D1 Baseball State Championship in the history for Pickerington is very special. We love sharing it with our PN Students and Staff, as well as our community. I need to thank all of the players and their families for the sacrifices and commitment that they have given to each other and to our PN baseball program. Seniors Koebe Rush, Justin Grubb, Nick Whetnall, Cole Losoncy, AJ Snyder, Branden Focarett, Luke Veltri, Ashton Gilliland, Connor Ayers, Brady Anderson, Juniors Alec Bradbury, Dillan Smith, Alex Miller, Sophomore, Mitchell Smith and Freshman Drew Salinas. A Big Thank You to all of my Assistant Coaches, Jeff Turnbull, Chick Campbell, Mark Galvin, Michael Rossi and Dick Noble, which I have called the “Greatest High School Staff” ever assembled. My wife, Pam, and our three beautiful girls Katie (16), Kara (13) and Alexa (8), THANK YOU for allowing me to do what I love and for all of your support you have given me.

We had 8 seniors on the team and only three of them were full-time players. Each and everyone of those seniors new their role and were major contributors throughout the season. This years tourney run was extra special, as we had to hit 2 HR’s in the bottom of the 6th against BG to win 2-1. Our only 2 HR”s of the season. Then in the regional finals we were down 5-1 in the bottom of the 6th and came back to defeat a very good Parma Padua team. The players were the main reason this team was able to accomplish what they did, but if it wasn’t for our coaching staff, this could not have happened. I would like to thank our assistant coaches, Rick Weaver, Braondon Fisher, Eric Sprague, Bryn Lehman, Justin Sonnenberg, Brock Bergman, Brett Yungmann, and Kevin Connor. I would also like to thank my wife Deanne and 3 kids, Chayse, Cassidy, and Calvin for allowing me to spend so much time with our great game of baseball.

2016 Season Highlights Winning a State Championship was a culmination of years of preparation and hard work. Since 2008 we prepare hard with proper fundamentals and proper situational baseball. We have had many good teams that could have also won a Championship. This team has experienced success along the way, finishing second in the Senior League division for Little League and playing a final on ESPN. We had great leadership from a small senior class ( 3 seniors). A family atmosphere was the theme and it created a tight knit group of players that played for each other and the community. This was our first year in D3 and the road to State was a tough one. The team responded to every challenge they faced and played good baseball along the way. This journey has been one of great community support and excellent assistant coaches. I am very proud to have a staff will with former players that care enough to give back and donate a lot of their time to the program. Chris Dages,Clippy Yoder, BJ Miller, Ryan Troyer, Bradley Schlabach, Scott Lowe are all dedicated to teaching the kids to play baseball the right way. I am truly blessed to have such great kids, outstanding coaches and over the top community support.

Division IV: Head Coach: John Cannizzaro, Newark Catholic Career Coaching Experience -- 30 years Number of Years at Newark Catholic -- 21 years 2016 Team Record -- 24-10 Head Coaching Career Record at Newark Catholic -- 470-187

Program Accomplishments: 1 -- Ohio High School Baseball Coaches State Poll Champion - 1986 1 -- 30-Win Season, 2006 19 -- 20 Win Seasons 16 -- Central District Titles 13 -- Regional Championships 2 -- State Semifinalists -- 2009, 2011 4 -- State Runnerup Teams -- 1987, 2007, 2010, 2014 7 -- State Championship Teams -- 1988, 1989, 2004, 2006, 2013, 2015, 2016

2016 Season Highlights: Successfully defending our 2015 State Title was a surprise due to lack of varsity experience with our pitching staff. We graduated our top three hurlers from 2015, but the 2016 group proved to be quite effective. I must give credit to our pitching coach Ed Clark, and our 4-year starting catcher Mitch Lohr for providing leadership for our staff. Two seniors, Tanner Marmie and Caine Whitney each had 8 wins. Juniors Drew Young and Jody Mummey also gave us solid outings. Lohr graduated with a 31-1 post-season record behind the plate, with no passed balls, three state titles, and one state runnerup finish. It also helped we had experienced players with Nic Cavinee at 1B, Jack Wollenburg at 2B, Tanner Lake at 3B, Jon Erhard, Jud Lewis, Mummey and Zac Walker in the outfield. Soph Tyler York became a valuable addition at 3B. Winning the Cardinal Division (11-2) of the Licking County League boosted our confidence level. Our challenging non-league schedule with the likes of Pickerington North (Div I champ), Clear Fork (Div III state tourney), and multiple District Championship teams improved our mental toughness. Two regional wins at Beavers Field in Lancaster were classics: 2-0 over Waterford and 4-1 of top-ranked Toronto in 10 innings. At Huntington Park in the State Semifinal, we topped another strong Fort Recovery team for the second year in a row, 7-3. That game was tied going into the fifth innng. In the State title game we jumped out to a 4-0 start in the first inning against Triad, but they came back to plate three runs in the second. It rained for the remainder of the contest to challenge the nervous system for everyone. We celebrated with a 5-4 victory. Our team dedicated the season in memory of a mother and friend of the Newark Catholic community Traci Joyce, who passed in April after a two-year battle with ALS, Our players invited members of the Joyce Family on to the field to accept the state championship trophy.
