The Lord's Prayer in the Gospel of Luke The Lord’s Prayer in the Gospel of Luke Moira Izatt Scholarscannotgiveadefinitedateastowhenthecanonicalgospelswerewritten,but itisbelievedthatMarkwaswrittenfirst,around70CE.Matthew,LukeandJohnwerewritten inthelatepartofthefirstcentury,perhapsbetween80and90CE.AlthoughJohnisalsoplaced inthe80sor90s,itisthoughtthathiswasthelastofthecanonicalgospelstobewritten. Thegospelsaremadeupoflayersoftraditionsandcollectionsofstories,sayings, andpassagesfromtheHebrewScripturesthatarestitchedtogethertotellaboutthefirst communities’experiencesofJesus.Thewritersofthegospelsalsomadeadditionsoftheirown dependingonthesituationandspecificneedsoftheircommunities.Scholarsuseavarietyoftext criticaltoolstoanalysethelayersoftraditionintheBibleinordertomakeeducatedguesses aboutthecommunitiesinwhichthewritingswerereadandused. Matthew,MarkandLukearecalledthesynopticgospelsbecausemuchofthematerial foundinthemissimilar.ItisgenerallyagreedthatLukeandMatthewusedMarkasaprimary source.Aswell,LukeandMatthewusedtheirownindependentsourcessothatthereismaterial inLukethatisfoundonlyinLuke,andmaterialinMatthewthatisfoundonlyinMatthew. LukeandMatthewalsousedanothersourcecalledtheQdocumentasoneoftheir primarysources.TheQdocumentisahypotheticalwrittendocument.Althoughthereareno extantcopiesofthisdocument,biblicalscholarshavereconstructeditbyanalyzingthematerial thatiscommontoLukeandMatthew,butnotfoundinMark.Becausemuchofthismaterial isthesamewordforwordinbothgospels,scholarsbelievethattheoriginalQwasawritten document.About30percentofLukeandabout25percentofMatthewcomefromtheQsource. Qisalsoreferredtoasthe‘SayingsSource’becauseitismostlymadeupofsayings withverylittlenarrative.Thesesayingsreflectthesentimentsofa1stcenturyapocalypticJewish Palestiniancommunity.Thatis,apoorcommunitythatwasunderduress,apeoplewhowere hopingforaprophet,priestorkingwhowoulddeliverthemfromlivesofhungerandpoverty. TheBeatitudes,whicharefoundinLukeandMatthew,areconsideredtobepartoftheQ document.Theygivehopetopoorpeoplewholongfortheendofaworldfilledwithinjustice. Blessedareyouwhoarepoor,foryoursisthekingdomofGod. Blessedareyouwhoarehungrynow,foryouwillbefilled. Blessedareyouwhoweepnow,foryouwilllaugh. Luke6.20-21 -21- Theyalsoportrayapeoplewhorailagainstthisinjustice. Butwoetoyouwhoarerich,foryouhavereceivedyourconsolation. Woetoyouwhoarefullnow,foryouwillbehungry. Woetoyouwhoarelaughingnow,foryouwillmournandweep. Luke6.24-25 ScholarswhoaccepttheexistenceoftheQdocumentbelievethatsomeofthesayings originatedwiththehistoricalJesus.TheLord’sPrayerandtheBeatitudesaresaidtobeamong these.TheprayerappearsinasimpleversioninLuke11.2-4andamoreelaborateversionin Matthew6.9-13. Primarily,theLord’sPrayerhasexistedandstillexistsinasacredcontextfor Christians,clerical,layandacademic;itisdifficultnottobeovershadowedbythisinfluencewhen analyzingit. TheLord’sPrayeralsoexistsinseveralsocialcontexts.Thereisthecontextofthe unknownQcommunity,aJewishcommunitysomewhereinearly1stcenturyruralPalestine. Therearethecontextsofthesomewhatmoreknownandmoreurbancommunitiesoutside ofPalestinetowhomLukeorMatthewaddressedtheirgospels.ThereareJewishChristian contextsandtherearegentileChristiancontexts.WealsohavethelargerworldoftheGreco- Romanempirewithinwhichthesesmallercommunitiesexisted. Similarly,theprayerexistsinseveralliterarycontexts.Wehavetheambiguouscontext ofahypotheticalgroupofsayingswithlittlerevealingnarrativereference.Wealsohavethe multi-layeredliterarycontextswithintheGospelsofLukeandMatthew.Thispaperlargely focusesontheGospelofLukewithsomereferencetotheActsoftheApostles. The Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles ScholarsbelievethattheGospelofLukeandtheActsoftheApostleswerewrittenby thesameperson,theputativeLuke,eventhoughtheyareseparatedbytheGospelofJohn.The firstclueappearsintheintroductiontoeachbook.TheGospelofLukeisdedicatedtoTheophilus. ThewriterofLukeexplainstoTheophilusthatheplanstogiveanorderedaccountofthelife ofJesus.ThewriterofActsalsoaddressesTheophilusinhisintroductionandreferstothe‘first book’thattellsabout‘allthatJesusdid’.BothbooksarecommonlyreferredtoasLuke-Acts. TheGospelofLukedescribesthelifeandmissionofJesusfrombeforehisbirthto hisdeath,resurrectionandappearancesinJerusalem.TheActsoftheApostlesdescribesthe -22- TheLord’sPrayerintheGospelofLuke expansionofthemissiontothegentilesandendsinRomewithPaul’steachingsbeingeasily acceptedbygentileaudiences.FromthelettersofPaul,whichpredateLuke-Acts,weknow thatthistransitionwasnotasseamlessasLukemakesitappear.Luke’seditorialadditionsand intentionssuggestthatthemostlygentileLucancommunityhadseparatedfromJudaism,the motherreligion.Asaresult,theylosttheprotectionofthespecialstatusthatJudaismheldinthe Romanempire.ThegrowinggentileChristiancommunityisbecomingadistinctreligiouscultin theGreco-Romanworld,butwithouttheprotectionofJudaism’sspecialprivilege,theChristian communitieshavetosurviveontheirownmeritintheRomanempire.Theyhavetodevelopand maintaingoodrelationswithRomanauthoritiesandatthesametimepreservetheintegrityof theirbeliefs. Relatedtothisisthedelayoftheparousia.NooneknowswhenChristwillcomeagain, sotheLucancommunitieshavetofindawaytoliveandproselytizeforanunknownlength oftime.OneofthetechniquesthatLukeusestomaketheChristiancultacceptabletoRoman authoritiesistoshowthatgentilesofhighsocialstandingoftenunderstandandacceptJesus’s authoritymorereadilythanJews(7.6). The Holy Spirit and prayer PrayerandtheHolySpiritarevitaltothesurvivalofthecommunity.These themes areintertwinedandrunlikeathickgoldenthreadthroughoutLuke-Acts.IntheGospelofLuke, prayer,praiseandblessingareoftenlinkedtothepresenceoftheHolySpirit. ThefirsttwochaptersofthegospelaboundwithpeopleprayingandpraisingGodand thepresenceoftheHolySpirit.Attheverybeginning,(1.8) thewholeassemblyisprayinginthe TemplewhenJohntheBaptist’sfather,Zechariah,hashisvisionaboutJohn’smiraculousbirth. TheangelGabrieltellsZechariahthatJohnwillbefilledwiththeHolySpiritevenbeforeheis born. Mary’ssongofpraise(1.46-55) isaprayerofrejoicing,thetoneandthemereminiscent ofHannah’ssongofpraiseintheHebrewScriptures.MaryhonoursGodwithhersoulandcalls Hisnameholy. UndertheinfluenceoftheHolySpirit,Zechariahbeginshisprophecyaboutthesalvation ofIsraelbyblessingGod(1.68-79). InLuke2.14,amultitudeofangelspraiseGodaftertheir announcementofthebirthofJesus.Likewise,theshepherdsglorifyGodaftertheyseethebaby Jesus(2.20). AtJesus’scircumcision,Simeon,‘guidedbytheSpirit’,praisesGod(2.28-32). Anna, anotherprophetwhospentherlifeinfastingandprayeralsopraisesGod(2.37-38). LuketellsusthatJesusoftengoestoadesertedplacetopray(5.16). Theimageof -23- Jesusprayingaloneinvokesasenseofthesacredinthehearerorreader,especiallybecausewe knowhisstory,whathedidduringhislifetime,howhediedandwhathappenedafterhisdeath. InLuke3.21-22,JesusisprayingjustafterhisbaptismwhentheHolySpiritdescendson himandGodspeakstohim.‘YouaremySon,theBeloved;withyouIamwellpleased.’Although wecanassumethatJohntheBaptist(and possiblyotherdisciples)werearoundatJesus’s baptism,addressingJesusas‘you’suggeststhathearingthevoiceofGodisaprivateexperience whichisinkeepingwithLuke’sportrayalofJesusprayingalone.Afterthisexperience,Jesus, filledwiththeHolySpirit,goesintothewildernessandwrestleswiththetemptationsofthe devil. Prayeroftencomesbeforeanimportantdecision.InLuke6.12Jesusspendsthewhole nightinthemountainsinprayerandthefollowingday,hechoosesthetwelveapostlesfrom amonghisdisciples.Wedon’tknowhowmanycandidatesJesushadinmindforthetwelve apostles,butfurtheron,Lukewritesthat‘crowds’ofdiscipleswaitforhimontheplainafter hisdecision(6.17). TellingusthatJesusspendsthenightinprayerandthathehassomany followersunderlinesthecomplexityofhisdecision.Itpointstothesignificanceoftheroleof prayerinJesus’slife.Inthispartofthestory,thepowerofprayerisfurtherexemplifiedin teachingandinhealing.IntheSermononthePlain(6.17-49), Jesusteacheslargenumbersof peoplefromJudea,fromJerusalem,fromTyreandfromSidon.Intermsofgeography,these listenersandbrokenpeoplecamefromfarandwide.Jesushealseverysinglepersoninthose throngs.‘Powercameoutfromhimandhealedallofthem.’(6.19b) InLuke9.18-27Jesusisprayingwithhisdisciplesclosebywhenheasksthem,‘Whodo peoplesaythatIam?’Thedisciplesreplyvariously,andwhenJesusasksthediscipleswhothey thinkheis,Peteranswers,‘TheMessiahofGod’.Jesusdoesnotdisagree,andgoesontopredict hissuffering.Heexplainsthatdiscipleshipwillrequiresimilarsuffering.Inthisstoryprayeris connectedtopublicperception,self-identityandlifepurpose. InLuke9.28-36,JesusgoesupamountainwithPeter,JohnandJames.Asheprayshe istransformedinfrontofthedisciples’eyes.TheywitnessadifferentrealitywhereJesusspeaks withMosesandElijah.GodidentifiesJesusashissonagainandtellstheapostlestolistentohim. Afterthevoice,thatrealitydisappearsandJesusisalone. Jesus’smainteachingonprayerrunsfromLuke11.1-13whichincludestheLord’s Prayer,aparable,sayingsaboutpersistenceinprayerandthepromiseoftheHolySpirit.The needtobepersistentinprayerisreiteratedinLuke18.1-7.FurtheronJesuspointsoutthat humilityisthecorrectattitudetotakebeforeGodinprayer(18.9-14). InLuke19.46,JesusmakesapowerfulstatementaboutprayerandtheTemple.He cleansestheTemple,thecentreofJudaism,whilequotingIsaiahwhodesignatedtheTempleasa -24- TheLord’sPrayerintheGospelofLuke houseofprayer. WhenJesuscleansestheTemple,weareneartheendofLuke’sgospel.Thisstory recallsthebeginningofthegospelwhentheTemplewasfilledwithdevoutpeopleatprayer. TheangelpredictedthecomingofJohntheBaptistwhosemissionitwastocleansethepeopleof Israel. InLuke20.47,JesuscriticizesTemplefunctionarieswhosubstitutelongprayersfora genuineunderstandingofwhatGodwants.Theysaylongprayerswhileatthesametimeshow nomercytovulnerablepeopleinneed.

India Abstract Buddhism is a world religion, which arose in and around the ancient Kingdom of Magadha (now in Bihar, India), and is based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama who was deemed a "Buddha" ("Awakened One"). Buddhism spread outside of Magadha starting in the Buddha's lifetime. With the reign of the Buddhist Mauryan Emperor Ashoka, the Buddhist community split into two branches: the Mahasaṃghika and the Sthaviravada, each of which spread throughout India and split into numerous sub-sects. In modern times, two major branches of Buddhism exist: the Theravada in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia, and the Mahayana throughout the Himalayas and East Asia. INTRODUCTION Buddhism remains the primary or a major religion in the Himalayan areas such as Sikkim, Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, the Darjeeling hills in West Bengal, and the Lahaul and Spiti areas of upper Himachal Pradesh. Remains have also been found in Andhra Pradesh, the origin of Mahayana Buddhism. Buddhism has been reemerging in India since the past century, due to its adoption by many Indian intellectuals, the migration of Buddhist Tibetan exiles, and the mass conversion of hundreds of thousands of Hindu Dalits. According to the 2001 census, Buddhists make up 0.8% of India's population, or 7.95 million individuals. It asks students to consider the historical context of the two sermons, the influence of Hellenistic Judaism on the authors of the two Gospels, and the challenges of using such literature to reconstruct history. To get the students started engaging with the texts, the lesson asks students to compare two artistic depictions of the sermons. It then moves to a close reading of both sermons using a guided reading graphic organizer and a resource developed by Advanced Placement called a SOAPStone graphic organizer. Using these tools to engage with the sermons will sharpen students’ critical reading skills as well as give them methods they can use when they read other demanding texts. Coming from two of the earliest accounts of Jesus’ teachings, these passages stem from a time when Hellenistic Judaism and nascent Christianity were both shaping portrayals of Jesus. Hence, the lesson includes resources to help students analyze how each sermon reflects its ancient cultural context and to consider the larger question of how scholars arrive at interpretive and historical conclusions when they have limited sources from which to draw.

Zannoni Pre Note: On December 8, 2020, Pope Francis proclaimed in an Apostolic Letter entitled “Patris corde” (“With a Father’s Heart”) a “Year of Saint Joseph” from December 8, 2020, to December 8, 2021. Also, the Church celebrates the Solemnity (feast) of St. Joseph liturgically on March 19. Thus, the following reflection is offered on Joseph's biblical roots, the spouse of Mary, the mother of Jesus. What the Gospels Reveal About St. Joseph The only source we have for St. Joseph is the gospels. He is mentioned sixteen times in three of the four gospels. Matthew mentions him eight times, Luke seven times, and John once. This singular reference to Joseph in John's gospel (6:41-42) only refers to Joseph as the father of Jesus. The Portrayal of Joseph in the Gospel of Matthew In Matthew's gospel's infancy narrative, the first time Joseph is mentioned is in the genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:1-17), and he is called the husband of Mary (1:16). The second time Joseph is referred to as betrothed to Mary. They are engaged, “but before they lived together, she [Mary] was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit” (1:18). Mary and Joseph are between two stages of ancient Jewish marriage. The first is the formal consent in the home of the father of the bride. The second, made later, is the transfer of the bride to the house of the groom. In the Jewish legal view, Mary and Joseph's betrothal was considered a legally contracted marriage, completed before they cohabitated.

How were the decisions made about which Gospels to keep, and which to cast away? Was it sexism and patriarchy? An attempt to exert control over the populace as the hippie Way of Jesus hardened into a state religion? Or was Q closer to the truth than Mary or Thomas’s tellings? Who gets to decide what truth is, and what criteria do they use? There is a new Q circulating in our culture today that has nothing to do with Jesus, although many of the people proclaiming it are Christians.

    The Meaning and Message of the Beatitudes in the Sermon On the Mount (Matthew 5-7) Ranko Stefanovic Andrews University The Sermon on the Mount recorded in Matthew 5-7 is probably one of the best known of Jesus’ teachings recorded in the Gospels. This is the first of the five discourses in Matthew that Jesus delivered on an unnamed mount that has traditionally been located on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee near Capernaum, which is today marked by the Church of the Beatitudes. New Testament scholarship has treated the Sermon on the Mount as a collection of short sayings spoken by the historical Jesus on different occasions, which Matthew, in this view, redactionally put into one sermon.1 A similar version of the Sermon is found in Luke 6:20-49, known as the Sermon on the Plain, which has been commonly regarded as a Lucan variant of the same discourse. 2 The position taken in this paper is, first of all, that the Matthean and Lucan versions are two different sermons with similar content delivered by Jesus on two different occasions. 3 Secondly, it seems almost certain that the two discourses are summaries of much longer ones, each with a different emphasis, spiritual and physical respectively. Whatever position one takes, it appears that the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew is not just a collection of randomly selected pieces; the discourse displays one coherent literary theme. The Sermon is introduced with the Beatitudes, which are concluded with a couplet of short metaphoric parables on salt and light.

FOREWORD “The Sermon on the Mount is probably the best-known part of the teaching of Jesus, though arguably it is the least understood, and certainly it is the least obeyed” (Stott, p. 15). That judgment has been expressed by many and is sadly true. Unfortunately, to say that the Sermon on the Mount is the best-known part of Jesus’ teaching does not say very much, as so little of Jesus’ teaching is known today. Even that which is known is not understood. How can one only know small pieces of Jesus’ teaching and expect each piece to be understood apart from the whole? And the notion of obedience has fallen on hard times even among those who claim to be followers of Jesus. The Sermon speaks to those who would be citizens of the kingdom of God. All of Jesus’ teaching centered on God’s kingdom, but while many of Jesus’ parables highlight the worth of the kingdom and the pressing need to enter the kingdom, they do not tell us of the character of kingdom citizens.

Christmas 2010 Page 2 Purpose: The purpose of this session is to remind participants that the hope of God’s justice for the world was assured through the coming of Jesus Christ; it is the promise of Christmas. It will challenge participants to reclaim that hope and to live into it as they strive to be agents of God’s justice in light of tragedy of human trafficking that overshadows the lives of many women and children in our world. Suggestions for Leader: Two weeks before the meeting read Luke 1:46 – 55 and Luke 6: 12 - 26. Dwell in these scripture for several days. Read them both silently and aloud. If possible read them in several translations including the one that you read most frequently. Crosswalk.com is a good online resource for different Bible translations. Write down your thoughts, questions, and emotions as you read the scriptures. Note if they remain the same or are different as you read on several occasions. What similarities do you find in these scriptures from chapter 1 and chapter 6? How do they support and reinforce one another? What promises do you hear in these scriptures? Now read the introduction and familiarize yourself with the lesson materials. Visit the Disciples Women website, www.disciplewomen.org, and review the information provided regarding the issue of human trafficking. Check out the websites to familiarize yourself with what other women in other congregations are doing to put an end to modern day slavery.

    The Gospel of Luke Class 6 “In the Gospel of Luke Jesus promises his disciples three things—that they would be completely fearless, absurdly happy, and in constant trouble.” - William Barclay, The Gospel of Luke The Genesis Restored & The Covenant Expanded Luke’s Gospel provides an account of Jesus life and teaching that relates to universal mission. This is what makes the Gospel of Luke the most ‘catholic’ (little c) in nature. Luke’s gospel shows that the Gospel message is not limited to any one culture or people, the story of Jesus and salvation history now belongs to all peoples. In the gospel pattern of showing that the covenantal history of the Jewish people is fulfilled, Luke makes it his primary point to reach back to Genesis and restore the covenant the God made with Adam and Eve. Unlike the Gospel of Matthew which reaches back primarily to the Abrahamic covenant to show the Jesus is the restoration and fulfillment of Jewish history, Luke showing Jesus came to save not only the Jewish people, but the entirety of mankind. The gospel demonstrates the universality of God’s love, it stresses the fact that Jesus reached out to all sorts of people, even to those who seemed to have no chance at salvation. In Luke’s gospel everyone has the potential to be saved! The debt that was racked up by our first parents, Adam & Eden, has been paid by the new Adam, Jesus. Sin has now power of Christ.
