First Annual Report 2001-02 First Annual Report 2001-02 The first Randwick Petersham First Grade Team Left to Right: Andrew Millican, Ian Barter, Richard CheeQuee, Daryl Parmenter, Grant Parmenter, Andrew Harrison, James LeHuray, Adam Warren, Graham Doig, Paul Toole (Captain), Paul Staunton (front) www.randwickpetershamcricket.com.au In the beginning… the birth of Randwick Petersham Cricket No-one could have predicted that the NSW Cricket Board’s proposal in December 2000 to reduce the Sydney Grade Cricket competition from 20 clubs to 16, would have been the catalyst for the birth of a new, exciting and competitive cricket entity. And so it was that two of Sydney’s oldest and most successful cricket clubs became a single body under the banner of Randwick Petersham. Under the NSW Cricket Board plan, Hawkesbury, Mosman, Petersham and Randwick were destined for the chop. In preparing final submissions for presentation to the Board, discussions commenced between Petersham and Randwick as to the prospects of a merger. The benefits of such an amalgamation soon became evident and a firm agreement was reached prior to the separate presentations to the Board by each club. That proposal, together with other issues presented by the threatened clubs, resulted in the Board deciding to maintain the status quo of 20 clubs for two seasons when it would again revisit its restructure plans. Despite the reprieve, the Petersham and Randwick clubs felt there was much to be gained by continuing with its merger plans and on 19 July 2001, Sydney’s newest grade club—Randwick Petersham Cricket Club, was born. Hatched from an idea by Randwick CEO Laurie Heil and pursued to reality by Alan Wright and Wayne Mulherin, the merger brought together two of Sydney’s oldest and most famous clubs, each with a similarity in culture and 101 years of grade cricket tradition and experience. In formally announcing the amalgamation, new President Mike Whitney said “While this move represents the end of an era for two of grade crickets’ great clubs, it is also the dawning of a new and exciting period for the combined club as well as for cricket in the whole Randwick Petersham area”. The terms of the merger included an agreement that the colours of the new club would be green, gold and white (a combination of the colours of both former clubs) while Coogee and Petersham Ovals would rotate as the first grade home ground. For the Petersham club, this was it’s second merger, having been through the process when Petersham and Marrickville combined in 1951-52, a season which saw the new club take out the club championship, the third and fourth grade premierships and the Poidevin Gray competition. The contribution to Australian, New South Wales and grade cricket by the Petersham and Petersham Marrickville clubs has been outstanding, having produced players of the calibre of Sid Barnes, Jack Moroney, Tommy Andrews, Ernie Toshack, Bobby Simpson and Johnny Martin together with administrators such as Dudley Seddon, Sydney Smith and Brian Hughes. The latter two gentlemen went on to become President and CEO respectively of the NSWCA. Randwick’s record of 7 First Grade Premierships and 8 Club Championships stamps it as one of the great grade clubs of the past century. Names such as Jack Chegwyn, Alex Marks and Dave Sherwood are synonymous with the club while Randwick has been home to Test stars John Benaud, Alan Turner, John Dyson and Mike Whitney. Prior to 1998-99, the NSW State team included a Randwick player for each of the previous 34 seasons. When Randwick Petersham took the field against University of New South Wales as a Sydney Grade club on 29 September 2001, it was history in the making. We are proud to have been part of it. As he tucked his pads under his arm and picked up his bat, the rest of the players were already making their way to the change room at the back of the ivy-covered Members Stand. The Sheffield Shield season was beginning that week in Brisbane. Queensland would play New South Wales. Like a slow thaw following winter, cricket’s arrival heralded the approach of summer. Chappell felt compelled to make some sort of speech on the eve of the season. Despite his prowess with words he wasn’t much for the ‘rah rah’ stuff. He believed bowlers bowled and batsmen batted. If they needed motivation from speeches then there might be something wrong. When he spoke it was direct and honest which is why his mind was being tugged in two directions: what 20170814_3204 Chappells last stand_TXT.indd 1 15/8/17 10:42 am he wanted to say to the team that might set the tone for the year, and what he really thought of their chances.

  • Index to Marrickville Heritage Society Inc Newsletter Issn 0818-0695
INDEX TO MARRICKVILLE HERITAGE SOCIETY INC NEWSLETTER ISSN 0818-0695 Vol 1 No 1 June 1984 To Vol 25 No 10 June 2009 Compiled by Robert Thompson The first issue of Marrickville Heritage Society’s Newsletter appeared in June 1984, just a short time after the formation of the Society. That first issue boldly declared itself to be vol 1 no 1. That we are now able to present an index to Volumes 1 to 25 is due to the determination and skill of each of the editors and contributors who have continued to produce a publication of such high quality. An early decision taken by members of the Society was that it should be an active organisation, rather than a remote one where members would simply pay their subscriptions and leave all the work to a committee. Because of its superb program of activities it has become a true ‘society’. The resulting comradeship has seen members working together to preserve not only the built environment of Marrickville but, perhaps more importantly, our social history as well. The story of Marrickville’s people is a vibrant, ongoing one in which each of us continues to play a part. And while members’ research will uncover and document more of our past, the initiatives and activities of Marrickville Heritage Society will ensure its relevance to a wider society, encouraging the protection of our heritage into the future. The Newsletter records each of our excursions and the speakers – from within and outside the Society – who have entertained and informed us; the fascinating, the horrifying and the sometimes bizarre in Marrickville’s unique story.

  • Cricket Memorabilia Society Postal Auction Closing at Noon 10
CRICKET MEMORABILIA SOCIETY POSTAL AUCTION CLOSING AT NOON 10th JULY 2020 Conditions of Postal Sale The CMS reserves the right to refuse items which are damaged or unsuitable, or we have doubts about authenticity. Reserves can be placed on lots but must be agreed with the CMS. They should reflect realistic values/expectations and not be the “highest price” expected. The CMS will take 7% of the price realised, the vendor 93% which will normally be paid no later than 6 weeks after the auction. The CMS will undertake to advertise the memorabilia for auction on its website no later than 3 weeks prior to the closing date of the auction. Bids will only be accepted from CMS members. Postal bids must be in writing or e-mail by the closing date and time shown above. Generally, no item will be sold below 10% of the lower estimate without reference to the vendor.. Thus, an item with a £10-15 estimate can be sold for £9, but not £8, without approval. The incremental scale for the acceptance of bids is as follows: £2 increments up to £20, then £20/22/25/28/30 up to £50, then £5 increments to £100 and £10 increments above that. So, if there are two postal bids at £25 and £30, the item will go to the higher bidder at £28. Should there be two identical bids, the first received will win. Bids submitted between increments will be accepted, thus a £52 bid will not be rounded either up or down. Items will be sent to successful postal bidders the week after the auction and will be sent by the cheapest rate commensurate with the value and size of the item.

Congested roads, overcrowded emergency departments, or overflowing classrooms affect the daily lives of every family. A good government understands that targeted investments in infrastructure address these issues to make our lives better. The central policy challenge for NSW is improving our quality of life at a time of budget constraints, rising population and greater demands on services. Mike Baird is telling the people of NSW that he cannot address these challenges without privatising our publicly owned electricity network. But this is a risky and irresponsible plan that would leave us worse off in the long term, and guarantees we lose up to $1 billion every year in dividends that help fund the running of our schools and hospitals. Labor’s infrastructure plan does not rely on a risky sale of our electricity assets, and we will not transfer the profits generated by our electricity network to the private sector. Our plan will guarantee a long term funding source built on stable revenue measures that have been costed by the NSW Government appointed independent Parliamentary Budget Office.

  • Three Generations of O'loughlin's
Three generations of O’Loughlin’s (Annual Report – 2016/17) Three generations of O’Loughlin’s Randwick Cricket Club icon John O’Loughlin may have been the proudest man in Heaven when his grandson Mitchell made his Sydney Grade Cricket debut with Randwick Petersham. Taking the field in 5th Grade against University of NSW at David Phillips North Oval, Mitchell became the third generation of O’Loughlin’s to play for Randwick / Randwick Petersham after grand-father John and father Paul. While there have been many father, son and other family combinations throughout the history of Sydney Grade cricket (now NSW Premier Cricket) there have surprisingly, been very few instances where players from three generations have participated in the competition and even more rare when playing for the same club. John O’Loughlin was a life member and one of the champions of Randwick District Cricket Club. He played between 1943 and 1972 as a high-order right hand batsman and part-time leg-spin bowler. He was Randwick’s fifth highest run-getter in its 101 years, scoring 8,313 runs with five centuries including 6,662 in 2nd Grade and 693 in 1st Grade. He regarded his 52 against the world’s fastest bowler Jeff Thomson on a dangerous wet wicket and winning the 1st Grade batting average in 1965-66 when the West Indian fast bowler Wes Hall played with Randwick, as two of his fondest moments in the game. John passed away in 2014. Inspired by his father, 18 year old Paul O’Loughlin made his debut with Randwick in 1978-79 playing in the club’s first 5th Grade team which made the semi-finals.
