He has partnered with the Internet Archive (www.archive.org) to make 2,000 films from his collection available online and worked with the Voyager Company to produce 14 laser discs and CD-ROMs of films drawn from his collection, including Ephemeral Films, the series Our Secret Century, and Call It Home: The House That Private Enterprise Built. Washington, DC—The National Gallery of Art is pleased to announce that the 2017 summer film program will include more than 40 screenings: several Washington premieres; special appearances and events; new restorations of past masterworks; a salute to Canada; a special From Vault to Screen series; and a family documentary by Elissa Brown, daughter of J. Carter Brown, former director of the National Gallery of Art. Film highlights for the summer include the premiere of Albert Serra's acclaimed new narrative Death of Louis XIV. The seven-part series Saluting Canada at 150 honors the sesquicentennial of the Canadian Confederation. A six-part series, Cinéma de la révolution: America Films Eighteenth- Century France, offers a brief look at how Hollywood has interpreted the lavish culture and complex history of 18th-century France. Helen Levitt , (born August 31, 1913, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.—died March 29, 2009, New York), American street photographer and filmmaker whose work captures the bustle, squalor, and beauty of everyday life in New York City. Levitt began her career in photography at age 18 working in a portrait studio in the Bronx. After seeing the works of French photographer Henri- Cartier Bresson, she was inspired to purchase a 35-mm Leica camera and began to scour the poor neighbourhoods of her native New York for subject matter. About 1938 she took her portfolio to photographer Walker Evans’s studio, where she also met novelist and film critic James Agee, who had collaborated with Evans on the book Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (1941). She struck up friendships with the two men, occasionally accompanying the former on his photo shoots in the city. During this period Levitt often chose children, especially the underprivileged, as her subject matter. Her first show, “Photographs of Children,” was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1943 and featured the humanity that infuses much of her work. Included in this show were photographs from her visit in 1941 to Mexico City, where she photographed the city’s street life. Agee wrote the introduction to Levitt’s book of photographs entitled A Way of Seeing: Photographs of New York , which she compiled in the late 1940s. -

Organized by the National Gallery of Art, Artists, Amateurs, Alternative Spaces: Experi- mental Cinema in Eastern Europe, 1960 – 1990 gathers more than sixty rarely screened films that reflect nonconformist sensibilities active in former USSR-occupied states. Inde- pendent of Reality: Films of Jan Němec is the first complete retrospective in the United States of the Czech director’s fea- ture films, assembled by independent curator Irena Kovarova, and presented jointly with the American Film Institute (AFI). Hard Thawing — Experimental Film and Video from Finland is a two-part event presenting a view of Finnish artistic practice seldom seen in North America. Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema, a retrospective of the modern cinema of Poland from 1956 through 1989, brings together twenty-one films selected by Scorsese, shown in collabora- tion with Di-Factory and Milestone Film and presented jointly by the Gallery and the AFI. Other screening events include a ciné-concert with Alloy Orchestra, two screenings of Ingmar Bergman’s The Magic Flute shown in conjunction with the Washington National Opera’s production of Mozart’s opera, and artist Bill Morrison’s latest work, The Great Flood. -

THE THOMAS BRANDON COLLECTION The Museum of Modern Art Department of Film The Celeste Bartos International Film Study Center Collection of papers catalogued by Charles Wolfe, August 1985 (revised July 1986) Additional notes added by Tanya Goldman, August 2017 Brandon Collection 2 Scope and Content The heart of the Thomas Brandon Collection of papers consists of documents, correspondence, interviews, essays and clippings assembled by Mr. Brandon during the course of his research on several projects during the 1970s. The collection has been divided into five sections: Section I contains materials pertaining directly to Mr. Brandon’s activities from the 1930s through the 1970s, including his work on two unpublished books. Sections II, III, and IV contain Film Title, Personality, and Subject Files, respectively. Section V contains miscellaneous oversized items. Sections II, III, and IV are organized alphabetically and thus serve as indexes to the topics they survey. Related materials from Section I and Section V are cross-index in the Film Title, Personality, and Subject File sections to facilitate use of this catalogue. The left-hand column of letters and numbers indicates the Box and Folder Number for each file in the collection. Biographical Note Thomas J. Brandon (born in 1908 in New York City) was an early member of the New York Workers Film and Photo League, a group of radical filmmakers who documented the era’s labor unrest during the first half of the 1930s. In 1933, Brandon co-founded (with Pulitzer Prize- winning playwright Sidney Howard) the short-lived Film Forum, one of the earliest film societies in the United States. -
