With the likes of Fergie, Timbaland, Snow Patrol, Maroon 5, and Soulja Boy, Interscope finished ahead of second place Zomba. Interscope did so with a huge chart share jump, up from 8.4% last year to 12.6% this year. Zomba had a record year, finishing a solid second, rising from 8.0% in 2006 to 11.9% in 2007. The label was keyed by Justin Timberlake, Pink, T-Pain, Ciara, and Chris Brown at the Top 40, Rhythmic, and Urban formats. One of the biggest wins this year for Zomba was at Rock, Active Rock and Alternative, where Three Days Grace was the most played artist. Atlantic had another solid year, finishing third. The label acquiredRoadrunner, and therefore the huge Nickelback and Stone Sour airplay that comes with it. However, Atlantic had a solid year all around with Gym Class Heroes, Plies, Musiq, and T.I. Last year’s champion, Island Def Jam came in fourth this year. The loss of Roadrunner surely had an effect, but IDJMG still ranked in the top five. Leading the IDJMG charge this year were Rihanna, Kanye West, Fall Out Boy, and Ne-Yo. In fifth place was RCA Music Group – keyed by “American Idol” contestant Daughtry – who scored No. 1 hits at Top 40, AC, and Hot AC. Baby Boy, Carrie Underwood, and Alicia Keys also contributed to the RMG success. The label pulled in 18.5% of the overall label share. Three labels finished the year with double digit chart shares. Zomba was second with 15.1%, while RCA Music Group was third with 12.0%. Those three labels accounted for almost half of all of the chart airplay at Top 40 in 2007. Interscope was keyed by huge years from Fergie, Timbaland, and Gwen Stefani. Fergie had two songs among the year’s 10 most played, and just scored her fifth top 10 hit within the last week with “Clumsy.” Over at Zomba, a stellar year was driven by a plethora of hits from sophomore efforts from Justin Timberlake, T-Pain, Ciara, and Chris Brown. Zomba soared from 9.2% last year to 15.1% this year. RCA Music Group finished third, moving from 6.9% last year to 12.0% this year. Daughtry, Avril Lavigne, and Paula Deanda all played a major role in the label’s strong 2007 finish. Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.
