Suggested Ideas, Links and Activities for WB: 22.6.2020 Week 1 – Summer 2 Hope You Are All OK, and Enjoying the Home Learning Suggested ideas, links and activities for WB: 22.6.2020 Week 1 – Summer 2 Hope you are all OK, and enjoying the home learning. We are missing you all so much and are really enjoying reading and seeing what you have been up to at home, please continue to send in your work and photos of you doing things, it really cheers us up!! As you know, this half term’s topic is … Below are this week’s activities for you to have a go at. Use Oxford Owl to access books online! https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a- book/library-page/ Complete the 60 second read. Read the text ‘The History of Circuses’ and answer the questions on the other side. If you get stuck remember to ask for help from an adult. See below Activity 1: 60 second read. The Day The Crayons Quit book activities: Re-read the book with Mrs Cox but STOP at the yellow and orange crayon!!! Link: https://youtu.be/swDD5srkRiw. Reading Orange and Yellow Crayon are having a debate, to argue their case for why they should be the colour of the sun. Think about Yellow Crayon – imagine you are him. List all the reasons you can think of, to support why you (Yellow Crayon) should be the colour Duncan uses for the sun. See below Activity 2: yellow crayon argument. Now think about Orange Crayon – imagine you are him. List all the reasons you can think of to support why you (Orange Crayon) should be the colour Duncan uses for the sun. See below Activity 3: orange crayon argument. Persuasive writing – linked with reading – ‘The Day The Crayons Quit’. This week you will write a speech to try to persuade (convince) Year R children that you are the true colour of the sun! So when they do any colouring they will choose you and no one else to colour the sun! 1. Choose either yellow or orange crayon. Imagine you are them. Think about how you’re feeling. Look at the list you have made from the reading task and re-read the chosen coloured crayons previous letter again to remind you of ideas for your side of the argument. You can also add anymore that you might think of. TASK: Take a look at the PowerPoint that has been uploaded as a PDF on the website, go through it with an adult, it might help to think about how to write your speech and what to include. Writing 2. TASK: With a speech your ideas need to be organised so use the plan (see below Activity 4: Plan) to work out what ideas you are going to talk about and what order you are going to say them in. You also need an introduction to tell the audience who you are and why you are speaking to them and a conclusion to finish the speech and give a final closing sentence to convince the audience. Organise your ideas into the boxes remember a plan only needs key words. 3. Your audience is Year R children, aged 4/5. Your job is to convince them you are the true colour of the sun!! So you have to use bossy words phrases like ‘ you must ‘ and ‘It is clear that … ‘. Be polite but make sure your reasons are strong. TASK: Use your plan to write a draft of your speech. See below Activity 5: writing help for word mats/ useful phrases and a tick list for year 2 writing! . 4. You will need to practise your speech aloud, maybe even using your family as the audience. This is the time where you can edit anything or change things if you think you can improve it. Remember you can improve spelling and punctuation, but also your choice of words or even the way you have written sentences. Once you’re happy with your speech, write it up as a final piece. 5. You could then record yourselves reading your speech and send it into school so we can listen to your arguments!! We have provided a range of different phased activities for phonics; choose the phase you feel is appropriate for your child and remember, revisiting will not do any harm either! Phase 5: Watch Mrs Cox’s video all about the j sound family: https://youtu.be/m7miIyWukRY. Phonics Phase 5: Spelling: Rewrite the sentences but choose the correct spelling of the word. Spelling practice: your weekly spelling sheet has been uploaded. Choose between level 1 (high frequency words) or 2 (-ful and -less). See below Activity 8: weekly spellings. Spelling activity: complete the missing words in the story. See below Activity 9: –ful and – less story. Spelling activity: Make your own alphabet letters on pieces of small paper. You can make them as bright and colourful as you can. If you have magnetic letters, you can use them just the same. Now you can spell words without having to write them. See below Activity 12: apostrophe map. We have split maths into 5 days. We do understand that home learning can sometimes be tricky to fit in with home working life, so please don’t feel you have to complete them on the specific day, just do what you can, when you can. Most days or sessions have three parts. Fluency, problem solving and reasoning. As we have covered the Maths units for this year, we are now in our consolidation phase. Your child might be confident with the task or might need some extra help/support or a refresher of the maths involved depending on their ability. We have uploaded maths worksheets separately for the week click on the Wk4 - MATHS Maths SESSIONS upload on the website for a breakdown of each day’s work. This week we will cover 3D shape and place value. DT: We will split DT into 3 sessions. Session 1 (Design) will be completed this week and the following weeks we will complete the other sessions. By the end you will have created your very own model of a circus big top tent. TASK: Think about what you have around your house, materials you could use or any recycling and junk modelling you could use (like our space buggies) and things you could use for the colour, shape and decoration. Use the internet (google images -with an adult’s permission) to research what big top circus tents look like and see what you can come up with. Be creative to design (plan) your very own style of tent (See below Activity 13: DT- Design) - plan how you will construct and make your tent. You can label it with the materials you want to use too (just like we would do in class). Geography: Go on a walk of your local area. Look at different open spaces that you could use for your own circus. Write a report about the reasons why you have chosen that place, and why it would be the best place for a circus. - Think about space, rubbish and waste, transport for customers, queues and crowds, weather etc. - You could complete your own survey of the traffic or amount of people that walk past to see if it would be a good place to set up your circus. (Remember, the more people who can see or visit your circus the better.) - Discuss it with an adult to get your ideas together. Then write up what you have found and explain why you have chosen that site. PSHE: Watch the clip of the song from the film. What is the message of the song? – Diversity !! - Diversity means that there are lots of different kinds of people.

    Dear Reader, Life is full of firsts. First breath; first steps; first words; first day at school. But it’s the emotional firsts that hit you hardest. The first time you fall in love; hold your child in your arms; or say a final goodbye to a loved one. They’re the ones you can’t forget. A Million Dreams is quite a special first for me too in other ways. It’s not my first book – it’s actually my sixth. But it will be the first of my books that will be published in hardback. And to bring it to you I’ve reunited with my first publishers and editor, which makes it feel as if fate has been playing a part in the proceedings. This book is another first for me, because usually during the writing I will develop a fondness for one particular character. But that wasn’t the case with A Million Dreams. I wanted them all to get exactly what they wanted. But, if you’ve read any of my books before, you probably know that good things don’t always happen to my characters. Please don’t think that A Million Dreams is a book full of sadness, because to me it is actually quite the opposite; it’s full of hope and love. But sad things do happen to two amazing women and the story of how they, and the people around them, deal with that had its hooks in me from the very beginning. I hope you get to love Beth and Izzy every bit as much as I did.

The requirements of music literacy that I embrace have been well represented by the National Standards for Music Education, as devised by the National Association for Music Education, and envision a music program in which all students are exposed to: 1. With high-flying trapeze artists soaring high above the heads, to a bearded woman singing most divinely, to the shortest man dressed as a great general riding around on an elephant, and lastly, to the ringmaster, himself, in his bright red suit and top hat, incredibly dancing and taking charge of what an attendee may call a circus are the spectacles within the musical movie, The Greatest Showman (2017), directed by Michael Gracey. While this movie portrays the embracement of odd, yet intriguing individuals to society, The Greatest Showman simultaneously tells the origin story of this “celebration of humanity” (Gracey, 2017) set in New York during the mid-1800s by following the life of Phineas Taylor Barnum, otherwise known as circus showman, P.T. Barnum. The life of P.T. Barnum as depicted in the movie could be termed as a stereotypical rags- to-riches story where fluffy song and dance sustain the audience. Yet, the life of this immense dreamer and his transformation in the movie could also be described through a biblical lens, more specifically through three parables found within the Gospels. By dissecting Barnum’s life into three main parts, (1) his early life and creation of the circus, (2) his lust for wealth, fame, and exhilarating applause, and (3) his ultimate return home to his family can all be represented by the biblical parables of the Mustard Seed, the Rich Man, and the Prodigal Son, respectively.
