LucasArts and the Design of Successful Adventure Games: The True Secret of Monkey Island by Cameron Warren 5056794 for STS 145 Winter 2003 March 18, 2003 2 The history of computer adventure gaming is a long one, dating back to the first visits of Will Crowther to the Mammoth Caves back in the 1960s and 1970s (Jerz). How then did a wannabe pirate with a preposterous name manage to hijack the original computer game genre, starring in some of the most memorable adventures ever to grace the personal computer? Is it the yearning of game players to participate in swashbuckling adventures? The allure of life as a pirate? A craving to be on the high seas? Strangely enough, the Monkey Island series of games by LucasArts satisfies none of these desires; it manages to keep the attention of gamers through an admirable mix of humorous dialogue and inventive puzzles. The strength of this formula has allowed the Monkey Island series, along with the other varied adventure game offerings from LucasArts, to remain a viable alternative in a computer game marketplace increasingly filled with big- budget first-person shooters and real-time strategy games. Indeed, the LucasArts adventure games are the last stronghold of adventure gaming in America. What has allowed LucasArts to create games that continue to be successful in a genre that has floundered so much in recent years? The solution to this problem is found through examining the history of Monkey Island. LucasArts’ secret to success is the combination of tradition and evolution. With each successive title, Monkey Island has made significant strides in technology, while at the same time staying true to a basic gameplay formula. -

Input derived from Oryx Design Lab licensed sprites https://www.oryxdesignlab.com/products/16-bit- fantasy-tileset Abstract We present MMPX, an efficient filter for magnifying pixel art, such as 8- and 16-bit era video-game sprites, fonts, and screen images, by a factor of two in each dimension. MMPX preserves art style, attempting to predict what the artist would have produced if working at a larger scale but within the same technical constraints. Pixel-art magnification enables the displaying of classic games and new retro-styled ones on modern screens at runtime, provides high-quality scaling and rotation of sprites and raster- font glyphs through precomputation at load time, and accelerates content-creation workflow. MMPX reconstructs curves, diagonal lines, and sharp corners while preserving the ex- act palette, transparency, and single-pixel features. For general pixel art, it can often pre- serve more aspects of the original art style than previous magnification filters such as nearest- neighbor, bilinear, HQX, XBR, and EPX. In specific cases and applications, other filters will be better. -

The Story QUAKE Background: You get the phone call at 4 a.m. By 5:30 you're in the secret installation. The commander explains tersely, "It's about the Slipgate device. Once we perfect these, we'll be able to use them to transport people and cargo from one place to another instantly. "An enemy codenamed Quake, is using his own slipgates to insert death squads inside our bases to kill, steal, and kidnap. "The hell of it is we have no idea where he's from. Our top scientists think Quake's not from Earth, but another dimension. They say Quake's preparing to unleash his real army, whatever that is. "You're our best man. This is Operation Counterstrike and you're in charge. Find Quake, and stop him ... or it ... You have full authority to requisition anything you need. If the eggheads are right, all our lives are expendable." Prelude to Destruction: While scouting the neighborhood, you hear shots back at the base. Damn, that Quake bastard works fast! The Molecular Workbench Software: An Innova- tive Dynamic Modeling Tool for Nanoscience Education Charles Xie and Amy Pallant The Advanced Educational Modeling Laboratory The Concord Consortium, Concord, Massachusetts, USA Introduction Nanoscience and nanotechnology are critically important in the 21st century (National Research Council, 2006; National Science and Technology Council, 2007). This is the field in which major sciences are joining, blending, and integrating (Battelle Memorial Institute & Foresight Nanotech Institute, 2007; Goodsell, 2004). The prospect of nanoscience and nanotechnology in tomorrow’s science and technology has called for transformative changes in science curricula in today’s secondary education (Chang, 2006; Sweeney & Seal, 2008). Nanoscience and nanotechnology are built on top of many fundamental concepts that have already been covered by the current K-12 educational standards of physical sciences in the US (National Research Council, 1996). In theory, nano content can be naturally integrated into current curricular frameworks without compromising the time for tradi- tional content. In practice, however, teaching nanoscience and nanotechnology at the secondary level can turn out to be challenging (Greenberg, 2009). Although nanoscience takes root in ba- sic physical sciences, it requires a higher level of thinking based on a greater knowledge base. In many cases, this level is not limited to knowing facts such as how small a nano- meter is or what the structure of a buckyball molecule looks like. Most importantly, it centers on an understanding of how things work in the nanoscale world and—for the nanotechnology part—a sense of how to engineer nanoscale systems (Drexler, 1992). The mission of nanoscience education cannot be declared fully accomplished if students do not start to develop these abilities towards the end of a course or a program. -

ABSTRACT LOHMEYER, EDWIN LLOYD. Unstable Aesthetics: The Game Engine and Art Modifications (Under the direction of Dr. Andrew Johnston). This dissertation examines episodes in the history of video game modding between 1995 and 2010, situated around the introduction of the game engine as a software framework for developing three-dimensional gamespaces. These modifications made to existing software and hardware were an aesthetic practice used by programmers and artists to explore the relationship between abstraction, the materiality of game systems, and our phenomenal engagement with digital media. The contemporary artists that I highlight—JODI, Cory Arcangel, Orhan Kipcak, Julian Oliver, and Tom Betts—gravitated toward modding because it allowed them to unveil the technical processes of the engine underneath layers of the game’s familiar interface, in turn, recalibrating conventional play into sensual experiences of difference, uncertainty, and the new. From an engagement with abstract forms, they employed modding techniques to articulate new modes of aesthetic participation through an affective encounter with altered game systems. Furthermore, they used abstraction, the very strangeness of the mod’s formal elements, to reveal our habitual interactions with video games by destabilizing conventional gamespaces through sensory modalities of apperception and proprioception. In considering the imbrication of technics and aesthetics in game engines, this work aims to resituate modding practices within a dynamic and more inclusive understanding
