Van Avermaet, Gerrans, Matthews, Wellens and Degenkolb Headline an Impressive Field at the Grands Prix Cyclistes De Québec Et De Montréal 2018
PRESS RELEASE| For immediate release Van Avermaet, Gerrans, Matthews, Wellens and Degenkolb headline an impressive field at the Grands Prix Cyclistes de Québec et de Montréal 2018 Montréal, August 23, 2018 – Now in their ninth editions, the Grand Prix Cyclistes de Québec et Montréal (GPCQM) are once again asserting their impressive pedigree on the UCI WorldTour calendar, the top tier of international road cycling. The challenging courses, deep field of competitors with a large number of titles won, suspense-filled racing, quality of organization, and the friendly hospitality of Québec have made these races choice stops on the tour that all riders aspire to win. With just two weeks to go before race weekend, the 18 UCI WorldTeams and three wild-card teams (Israel Cycling Academy, Rally Cycling and Team Canada) have announced which riders they are sending to the races, and once again this year each has entered a squad of first-rate competitors well suited to the spectacular parcours in Québec City (sept. 7) and Montréal (sept. 9). The peloton of 147 riders, representing 28 countries, includes skilled road warriors like Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing Team), the reigning Olympic Champion, who also held the Yellow Jersey for eight days at this year’s Tour de France, won the Montréal GP in 2016, and has been on the podium in Québec City four times since 2012. “I love these two races; every year they’re among my main end-of-season challenges,” says the Classics specialist from Belgium, who will face tough opposition from several riders who are well versed in the traps of both city courses. -

Paris-Roubaix 1983

Although victory had eluded him on his previous ten attempts, Kuiper still regarded the Queen of the Classics as ‘his’ race. Paris-Roubaix, or the Hell of the North as it is also known, featured all the competitive ingredients he loved: an ordeal that only a rider with unimaginable perseverance and equally unimaginable willpower could withstand. The distance alone – between 255 and 265 kilometres as a rule – is enough to separate the men from the boys before the starting gun has even sounded. And the course itself, around 60 kilometres of which runs over ruthless stretches of cobbles, wears the riders down. The ride from Paris to Roubaix is a journey into pain. Rattling over those bald lumps of stone is hell on the joints. Your wrists, backside, and of course your legs are tested to breaking point. The weather often plays a decisive role, especially when the heavens open and mud from the sodden fields seeps onto the road. Road spatters leave many a rider peering out from behind a clay mask, as they slip, slide, tumble, get back up again, and doggedly give chase. -

Ranking the Greatest Cyclists of All Time
The Outer Line The External Perspective On Pro Cycling Rankinghttps://www.theouterline.com The Greatest Cyclists Of All Time Who are the greatest male cyclists of all time? That would make a good trivia question at the cycling club’s annual dinner, and it’s sure to provide fodder for unending debate. Think about it: How many of us in America know enough cycling history to even come up with five good names? Sure, you could list the men who have won five Tours de France: Anquetil, Merckx, Hinault, and Induráin. (I’m omitting Armstrong, whose seven victories were officially annulled.) But that’s only four names. And Le Tour, of course, is only one race. Most of us don’t know our cycling like we know our baseball. Any baseball fan past infancy knows the names Ruth and Gehrig, Mantle and Mays, Clemens and Bonds. But American cycling fans would be hard- pressed, I think, to remember — let alone spell — the names Joop Zoetemelk and Roger de Vlaeminck. Both of those men, as it turns out, probably belong on any list of all-time greats. Zoetemelk was a Dutch ironman who started and finished the Tour 16 times (and won it once). De Vlaeminck was a Belgian steam engine who won the brutal Paris-Roubaix four times, the marathon Milano-Sanremo three times, and Tirreno-Adriatico, the Race of the Two Seas, six times. I know all of this thanks to CyclingRanking.com, a well-researched and well-documented site that attempts to list, in order, the greatest professional men’s cyclists of all time. The site is a labor of love by a Dutch family that started out as a kitchen-table exercise in the 1970s, and it will humble even the most studious cycling fans. -
