  • Groups and Single Decorations for Gallantry
GROUPS AND SINGLE DECORATIONS FOR GALLANTRY SOLD BY ORDER OF THE RECIPIENT FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE BENEVOLENT FUND x596 The important C.N.Z.M., Q.S.O., Second World War D.S.O., D.F.C. group of eleven awarded to Squadron Leader J. L. “Les” Munro, Royal New Zealand Air Force, the last surviving “Dambuster” pilot Having won his D.F.C. for a tour of operations in 97 Squadron, including three trips to the ‘Big City’ which were memorable for ‘a mass of fires, weaving searchlights and bursting flak’ - Munro volunteered for 617 Squadron in March 1943 As quoted, in his wartime memoir Enemy Coast Ahead, Guy Gibson, V.C., described Munro as ‘one of those types who can always be relied upon to do the right thing at the right moment’: exactly what the New Zealander did on the night of the Dams Raid when his Lancaster’s communications were crippled by flak Leonard Cheshire, V.C., under whom Munro regularly flew as Deputy Leader, considered him a vital component of 617 Squadron’s ‘backbone’, a member of the ‘old firm’ who displayed ‘indomitable and cool courage’ on countless occasions and whose accurate marking was directly responsible for the destruction of many vital targets - the aircraft works Albert and the Michelin works at Clermont Ferrand among them In fact, the Dams Raid aside, Munro flew another 35 trail-blazing sorties in 617 Squadron, often leading-in the attacking force amidst curtains of flak, a case in point being the strike on the E-Boat pens at Le Havre and Boulogne when his Lancaster was yet again damaged by enemy fire: small wonder he attributed his survival to numerous visitations from ‘Lady Luck’ On one of his sorties to the heavily defended Antheor Viaduct, he marked the target from 300 feet, while on the eve of D-Day, with Leonard Cheshire as his 2nd Pilot, he displayed immense skill in carrying out the ‘spoof’ “Operation Taxable”: here, then, further evidence of an exceptional operational career that was finally curtailed on the orders of the A.O.C.

  • Operation Chastise
Operation Chastise Operation Chastise was an attack on German dams carried out on 16– Operation Chastise 17 May 1943 by Royal Air Force No. 617 Squadron, subsequently publicised as the "Dam Busters",[1] using a specially developed Part of the Second World War "bouncing bomb" invented and developed by Barnes Wallis. The Möhne and Edersee Dams were breached, causing catastrophic flooding of the Ruhr valley and of villages in the Eder valley; the Sorpe Dam sustained only minor damage. Two hydroelectric power stations were destroyed and several more were damaged. Factories and mines were also either damaged or destroyed. An estimated 1,600 civilians drowned: about 600 Germans and 1,000 mainly Soviet forced-labourers. The damage was mitigated by rapid repairs by the Germans, but production did not completely return to normal until September. • None but the Brave
None but the Brave None but the Brave provides a fresh look at the Allied bombing but campaign against the European Axis powers during the Second None the Brave World War. This bombing of the Third Reich and its allies was THE ESSENTIAL CONTRIBUTIONS OF RAF BOMBER COMMAND part of Britain’s overall war strategy to take the offensive to TO ALLIED VICTORY DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR the enemy. In doing so, it created a ‘second front’ that bled off resources from the enemy’s campaign against the Soviets, and it required massive amounts of manpower and materiel to be diverted from the primary war efforts to both confront the threat and to address the damage sustained. It dealt telling blows to the Axis economic and industrial infrastructure, forcing the decentralization of its war industries. Finally, it helped pave the way, through destruction of enemy air defence assets, oil resources, and transportation networks, for a successful invasion of Germany through northwest Europe. The book is also a celebration of the aircrew experience and the essential resolve and fortitude that was demonstrated by these campaigners throughout the conflict, in the face of frequently daunting perils and odds against survival. • Operation Chastise: Attack on Ruhr Dams by Aircraft of 617 Squadron on the Night of 16-17 May 1943
OPERATION CHASTISE: ATTACK ON RUHR DAMS BY AIRCRAFT OF 617 SQUADRON ON THE NIGHT OF 16-17 MAY 1943 Concept: The Air Ministry originally considered the Ruhr dams as a possible target early as 1937. A number of proposals and studies were undertaken between 1938 and 1941, though none produced a proper plan with all the necessary components of a viable weapon and feasible means of delivery. The Weapon: Codenamed “Upkeep”. The brainchild of Barnes Wallis of Vickers Armstrong, who had been working separately on some method of attacking dams since 1940 but probably did not conceive of the “bouncing bomb” idea until March 1942. He was given access and assistance by a variety of research bodies, including the National Physical Laboratories at Teddington, the Road Research Laboratory at Harmondsworth and the Building Research Station at Garston near Watford. Experiments which involved exploding charges against model dams at these sites, and the destruction of a real 180 foot disused dam in Wales, gave Wallis valuable data, but also showed that the task was far from easy and that any explosion preferably needed to take place in contact with the dam wall. He persisted with a series of experiments and meanwhile attempted to persuade the powers that be of the project’s viability in the face of various bureaucratic hurdles and military scepticism. Nevertheless, prior to final approval on February 26th 1943 a full-scale weapon was, in the words of one noted historian, “scarcely more than an inventor’s dream”. However, because the optimum time to attack the dams was in the spring, when the reservoirs were full, when approval did come it left very little time to design and produce the weapons themselves.

Signature of Candidate Type of Award DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD) Department HISTORY Abstract Major differences in British Second World War films produced in wartime 1939-45 (idealising the 'People's War') and post-war versions produced between 1945-65 (promoting the return of elite masculinity) suggest a degree of cultural re-conditioning concerning the memory of war, by Britain's middle-class film-makers attuned to national and international concerns. Therefore, the focus and main aim of this thesis is to identify and examine previously ignored or inadequately scrutinized themes within the post-war genre to explain how, and why, film-makers redefined the Second World War and its myths, tapping deeply into the national psyche, stimulating and satisfying a voracious, continuing, British appetite.
