Fictionalizing his childhood ascent to stardom, and subsequent adult crash-landing into rehab and recovery, Har’el casts Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges as Otis Lort, navigating different stages in a frenetic career. LaBeouf takes on the dar- ing and therapeutic challenge of playing a version of his own father, an ex-rodeo clown and a felon. Artist and musician FKA twigs makes her feature acting debut, playing neighbor and kindred spirit to the younger Otis in their garden-court motel home. Har’el’s feature narrative debut is a one-of-a- kind collaboration between filmmaker and subject, exploring art as therapy and imagination as hope. Honey Boy is directed by Alma Har’el (Bombay Beach, LoveTrue) from an original script by Shia LaBeouf.

Monday, February 8, 2021 | No. 154 On February 7, 1914, Charlie Chaplin introduced film audiences to his famous character the Little Tramp in Kid Auto Races at Venice, a 6-minute romp along the boardwalk at Venice Beach with the backdrop of a crowd gathered for a soapbox-derby event featuring juveniles racing motor-less cars. Produced by Mack Sennett’s Keystone Studios and directed by Harry Lehrman, the film shoot took place in a single day only three weeks before, at the Junior Vanderbilt Cup races which had come to Los Angeles that year. Chaplin’s talent for slapstick was manifest, with his goofball antics as the Little Tramp becoming his personal calling card and an icon for the silent film era. Commenting on the performance, one reviewer said, “Chaplin is a born screen comedian; he does things we have never seen done on the screen before." Chaplin’s comedy highlighted the life of the common man, with empathy for the struggles presented by modern American society. In 1974, 60 years later to the day, Warner Bros. held the world premiere of Mel Brooks’ Blazing Chaplin’s The Little Tramp Saddles at the Pickwick Drive-In Theater in Burbank. The 250 invited guests watched the film Click to Play from horseback. Brooks’ send up of the classic American Western went on to a rollicking success at the box office, grossing $119M in the US and Canada on a production budget of $2.6M. Brooks cast performers from his regular stable of comedians, including Gene Wilder, Harvey Korman, Madeline Khan and Cleavon Little, with appearances by Slim Pickens, the band leader Count Basie and three cameos by Brooks himself.

Reilly) who reaches out to him. Having been abandoned by his parents to an ailing uncle (“The Office’s” Creed Bratton), Terri, is mercilessly teased by his peers and garners even more unwanted attention from school authorities by coming to school still wearing pajamas – when he decides to show up at all. Resigned to his outsider status, Terri is surprised when his tough- talking vice principal, Mr. Fitzgerald, takes an interest in him. Although his efforts are sometimes clumsy and occasionally dubiously professional, he genuinely wants to help him through this tough time. Under Fitzgerald’s tutelage, Terri befriends a pair of fellow misfits, Chad (Bridger Zadina), an edgy loner whose rebellion masks his own insecurities, and Heather (Olivia Crocicchia), a sexually precocious girl whose beauty proves to be a trap of its own.

Monday, January 11, 2021 | No. 150 125 years ago on December 28, 1895, brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière conducted the first commercial film screening at in Paris, ushering in the era of motion picture exhibition. 30 customers paid to watch a series of nine short films – lasting 40-60 seconds each – that they had created using their Cinematographe, an invention which could project film images during playback. The Lumiere brothers were not only inventors, but they were also marketeers, advertising their events with posters that promoted the experience of going to the movies. Within a matter of weeks, their screenings had drawn in thousands of paying customers. From these first moments in exhibition, audiences were responding to the reaction of those around them The first movie posters promoted the movie- who were witnessing something never seen before. At screenings of the going experience more than any particular film famous 1903 film The Great Train Robbery made by Edwin S. Porter for Edison Studios, audiences were said to have been both terrified and thrilled by the on- screen violence, punctuated by the last scene in which a menacing cowboy glares directly at the audience and then draws and fires his pistol. The success of films today still depends on audience response. At film festivals, buyers are heavily influenced by the reaction of audiences to premieres, their surest indication as to whether a film “will play.” Studios continue to conduct advance screenings for their most important films with groups sitting together at a movie theatre, the setting that provides viewers with the most immersive movie experience.
