Regards Tony Bartolo Thank you very much for the lovely letters I received this year. Best wishes for Christmas to you and your family, Anna Caruana Australia Dear Frank Scicluna and all contributors of The Maltese E/Newsletters far and wide around Australia Another amazing South Australia E/Newsletter No 145 packed with cultural and valuable information. A true Maltapedia, valuable to allreaders worldwide. It is good to see so many E/Newsletters being published today. The NSW Maltese Herald Newspaper was indeed a lifeline to many emigrants early 1960s until it closed. I was an earnest reader under the capable Editors Mr Lawrence Dimech and Mr Lino Vella and proudly contributed many articles over the years in the Maltese and English languages, reporting on activities etc., keeping my Maltese language alive. It was an acknowledged huge blow to the NSW Maltese community readers when the last Maltese Herald newspaper was published. We sadly missed the importance of its historical contents. Thankfully nowadays it is all good, blessed with the Maltese Voice of NSW, E/newsletters from Victoria and South Australia to proudly pass on to our contacts worldwide. I humbly thank all you brave editors and contributors for keeping us much informed with your varied content which, all combined offer Maltese readers much to enjoy and learn from. Keep the good work going. Wishing all contributors and readers of this Journal a blessed Christmas 2016 and a healthy New Year 2017. Nancy Serg (nee Borg from Sliema) Many thanks for another Newsletter full of informative data and history. Maria and Reno Camilleri Thanks a lot for the effort you put in this compilation. Keep it up and looking forward to receive more newsletters in the coming year. If by any chance you come across some information on the Mellieha Ghar u Kasa it will be greatly appreciated. I take this opportunity to wish you and all your loved ones a most Holy and Blessed Christmas and plenty of health to keep us informed of Maltese notifications.Very Sincerely, your friend Victor Pullicino Thanks and congratulations for the Maltese Newsletter. Always very informative and interesting reading. Best Christmas Wishes to all Maltese Australians especially those whose origins are from Mosta. Victor B. Caruana (Malta) Well done for this spectacular newsletter, mate . I'll send you something about Christmas in Malta .for you Xmas e-newsletter.

  • Celebrate the Light! by the Rev
Celebrate the Light! By the Rev. Kenn Stright, Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations Committee Light is important in many religions and festivals throughout the world. It is most often the symbol of the divine who brings light into the world… “Let there be light!” (Genesis 1:3). Being such a religiously diverse and multicultural nation, Canada and Canadians have many wonderful opportunities to “celebrate the light.” God is the Light of the heavens and earth. His Light is like this: there is a niche, and in it a lamp, the lamp inside a glass, a glass like a glittering star, fuelled from a blessed olive tree from neither east nor west, whose oil almost gives light even when no fire touches it—light upon light—God guides whoever He will to his Light; God draws such comparisons for people; God has full knowledge of everything—shining out in houses of worship. —Qur’an 24:35–6 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. (John 1:5) The “Where are you going?” questions below are to let people know they can go and celebrate these festivals of light regardless of faith background and all of them are found here in Canada, maybe just around the corner. Where are you going? To celebrate Diwali. It’s Diwali, come and see the lights! This is the festival of lights, celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world with each candle symbolizing the power of light to conquer darkness. Hindus also take advantage of this period to contemplate and dispel the darkness of ignorance.

  • It's a Christmas Tree
It’s a Christmas Tree A few days ago, a debate boiled over in Boston when the city’s Web site referred to a giant tree erected on Boston Common as a “holiday tree.” Such a name drew instant response from Christians, including the Rev. Jerry Falwell, whose law group, the Liberty Counsel, threatened to file a lawsuit if the tree wasn’t rechristened with Christmas. “The Boston Christmas tree situation is symbolic of what’s happening … around the country,” said Matthew Staver, president and general counsel of Liberty Counsel. “Government officials, either because of misinformation, or private retailers, for politically correct reasons, are trying to secularize Christmas. To rename a Christmas tree as a holiday tree is as offensive as renaming a Jewish menorah a candlestick.” The Nova Scotia logger who cut down the 48-foot tree for Boston also was indignant. Donnie Hatt, the logger, said he would not have donated the tree if he had known of the name change. “I’d have cut it down and put it through the chipper,” he said. “If they decide it should be a holiday tree, I’ll tell them to send it back. If it was a holiday tree, you might as well put it up at Easter.” Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino said he would refer to the white spruce as a Christmas tree. The city has since restored the name to Christmas tree on its Web site. Later, Speaker J. Dennis Hastert in the U.S. House of Representatives told federal officials that the lighted, decorated tree on the West Lawn of the U.S.

  • Liberty Counsel Sample Listing of Christmas Issues
Liberty Counsel Sample Listing of Christmas Issues The following list is a sample of the scores of Christmas-related issues in which Liberty Counsel has been involved. This list represents a small fraction of the many Christmas-related cases. Independence, MO – Management at a complex funded by the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) did not allow residents to display Christmas decorations on the outside of their properties, while they allowed other types of decorations. Liberty Counsel sent letters to the management company and then alerted HUD of the situation. HUD initiated an investigation of the company for Fair Housing Act violations. Westfield, MA - Westfield High School L.I.F.E. Bible club wanted to pass out candy canes with an attached religious message about the origin of the candy cane and Christmas to their fellow classmates during non-instructional time. They were told by the superintendent that they were not allowed to distribute the candy canes because they would be violating the rights of those around them that don’t want to hear the message. Six students in the Bible club were suspended after they distributed the candy canes with the attached religious message. One of the students was a senior and a member of the National Honor Society, and another student aspired to enter a military academy after graduation. The Honor Society student would have lost her membership in the Honor Society due to the disciplinary action and would have likely hurt her chances of obtaining a scholarship to college. Similarly, the student who wanted to attend a military academy would have hurt his chances of obtaining entrance because of the disciplinary action.

HOUSES IN MERCH~NTS STREET, V ALLETTA by VICTOR F. DENARO Merchants Street, stretching from the Auberge d'Italie at one end to the Infermeria or old hospital at the other, is one of the busiest thoroughfares of Valletta. Every morning the street between St. John Street and Old Theatre Street is crowded with buyers at the stalls set up by vendors of every des cription of goods. At the left hand of the corner formed by Merchants Street and St. Lucia Street is what may be termed the cereal and potato exchange where brokers transact a considerable volume of business with exporters of potatoes and importers of cereals, whilst the opposite side of the road is oc cupied by importers of provisions and foodstuffs and their brokers. Near the Monte di Pietil (1) gold and jewellery changes hands, and the Valletta Market is only about fifty yards away. All these factors combine to make the street a hive of activity during the forenoon. At the head of Merchants Street, or Strada San Giacomo as it was known during the rule of the Order, opposite the Auberge d'Italie, stands the Palazzo Parisio at present used as the General Post Offi<;e. The site was originally occupied by two houses, one belonging to Chev. Fra Michel Fonterme dit la Chiesa and the other by Francesco This. These were purchased by the Bali of Manosca, Comm. Fra Giovanni di Ventimiglia, of the Langue of Provence, and formed part of an usufruct which he instituted in 1608 in favour of those members of his family who at any time might be serving in the Order (2).
