ABSTRACT FEARFUL QUESTIONS, FEARFUL ANSWERS: THE INTELLECTUAL FUNCTIONS OF GOTHIC FICTION by PAUL LEWIS The work of eleven British and American writers is examined in an effort to determine the thematic and formal characteristics of Gothic fiction. In refuting two mis­ taken views of the Gothic (that is, that all Gothic fiction is intellectually shallow, and that Gothic fiction was from the start Romantic and subjective), this study traces a development from the largely didactic fiction of the British writers to the speculative intensity of the American Gothic Tradition. The history of Gothic fiction has been described by Summers and Varma, its psychological appeal by Fiedler, its expression of a paradoxical, subjective, and Romantic vision of life by Nelson, Hume, Mandel, Kiely, and Dawson. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. discussion not of the philosophic content but of- the intellectual functions of the Gothic. In an effort to avoid value-laden terms like high and low Gothic, Chapter I distinguishes between didactic and speculative Gothicism, a distinction based on the way ideas are used. Starting with the accepted association of mystery with Gothicism, Chapter II shows how some writers (Walpole, Reeve, Radcliffe, and Lewis) use the resolution of mystery to advance theses and inculcate virtue,

No attempt has been made, except in an incidental way, to treat the initial flourishing of Gothic architecture; that the reader has at least a passing acquaintance with the architecture of the Middle Ages is assumed. Instead, the emphasis has been placed upon the Gothic survival of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; as Gothic architecture was virtually eclipsed during this period, many readers may feel that this emphasis is unwarranted.

Abstract: This paper focuses on novels addressed to that category of older teenagers called “young adults”, a particularly successful category that is traditionally regarded as a subpart of children’s literature and yet terminologically insists on overriding the adult/child divide by blurring the frontier between adulthood and childhood and focusing on the transition from one state to the other. In Britain, YA fiction has developed extensively in the last four decades and I wish to concentrate on what this literary emergence and evolution has entailed since the beginning of the 21st century, especially from the point of view of genre and narrative mode. I will examine the cases of recognized—although sometimes controversial—authors, arguing that although British YA fiction is deeply indebted to and anchored in the pioneering American tradition, which proclaimed the end of the Romantic child as well as that of the compulsory happy ending of the children’s book, there seems to be a recent trend which consists in alleviating the roughness, the straightforwardness of realism thanks to elements or touches of fantasy.

    The Gothic Novel and the Lingering Appeal of Romance While the origins of most literary genres are lost, either in scholarly controversy or the dark backward and abysm of time, those of the Gothic novel present an admirable clarity. Beneath the papier-mâché machicolations of Strawberry Hill, the antiquarian and aesthete Horace Walpole, inspired by a nightmare involving ‘a giant hand in armour,’ created at white heat the tale published Christmas 1764 as The Castle of Otranto. Not one but two genres were thus begun. The one established first was the historical romance, which derived from elements in both Otranto and an earlier romance by Thomas Leland, Longsword, Earl of Salisbury (1762). This form was pioneered by William Hutchinson's The Hermitage (1772), and developed by Clara Reeve (in The Champion of Virtue, 1777, retitled 1778 The Old English Baron) and Sophia Lee in The Recess (1783B85); it reached something like canonical status with the medieval romances of Walter Scott. The second, the Gothic tale of supernatural terror, was slower to erupt. The Otranto seed has time to travel to Germany and bear fruit there in the Räuber- und Ritter-romane before being reengrafted onto its native English soil. It was not until the last decade of the eighteenth century that the Gothic became a major force in English fiction, so much so that tales set in Italian castles and Spanish monasteries began to crowd out those set in London houses and Hampshire mansions. The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794), by Ann Radcliffe, and The Monk (1796), by Matthew G. Lewis, spawned numberless imitators in a craze whose original impetus carried it into the next century.

    ARTICLE https://doi.org/10.1057/s41599-019-0374-y OPEN Monsters and near-death experiences in Eric McCormack’s First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women Martin Kuester1* ABSTRACT Following Linda Hutcheon’sdefinition of parody as “repetition with a differ- ence”, this essay exposes how a contemporary Canadian novel parodically responds to 1234567890():,; seminal Early Modern English pre-texts. Eric McCormack is not only a Canadian post- modernist (and postcolonial) writer born in Scotland but also a specialist in Early Modern English literature and thus an ideal representative of the intertextual situation of Canadian writing between literary tradition and the challenges of postmodern/postcolonial writing. The essay interprets McCormack’s sexual gothic novel First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women discussing the way in which a literal or even literalist—rather than metaphorical—interpretation of literary and religious texts of the Early Modern period can make an important and sometimes harrowing difference in the lives of somewhat unsophisticated literary characters. McCormack’s ominously named character Andrew Halfnight literally interprets religious and literary texts he sees as signposts and guidelines of his personal behavior, thus showing how a literal interpretation of “canonical” texts limits the character’s ability to lead a self-determined happy life. The texts he refers to include the pamphlet The First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women by Scottish reformer John Knox, Robert Burton’s Anatomy of Melancholy and John Milton’s Paradise Lost, and these subtexts are more than challenged through their intertextual transfer into erotic or perhaps even pornographic contexts which probably would have shocked the Early Modern authors (although, for example, Milton was at least not unwilling or unable to include ero- ticism in his work).

This morning I want to ask you, ‘What story do you live in?’ All of us live in a story. We have a storyline running through our heads. And we play a major role in it. Let me give you some examples. Do you live in the hero story? This is a story where someone who makes a difference in the world and makes a name for himself or herself. You start off with some kind of hidden talent. You face obstacles, adversity, mountains and valleys of hard work, only to overcome in the end. What matters is the quest, the challenge, and the victory. It is the story of Harry Potter, the unlikely hero who is given a burden that no one else could carry, who fulfills his destiny. It is the story of King Leonidas, who gives his life against King Xerxes and the Persian Empire. Here’s a clip from 300 on that. [clip from Scene 17, where Xerxes is calling Leonidas to submit to him.] Notice how the threat of Xerxes is to wipe out Leonidas’ story. But as we know, the story is being retold by Dilios, who finishes his story on a new battlefield. As he finishes his story of the 300, he says, ‘Here they stare now, across the plain, at 10,000 Spartans, commanding 30,000 free Greeks,’ who are now united behind Sparta. Did you know that that story was retold in World War II.

Brookey, Northern Illinois University ABSTRACT This is a critical cultural and political economic analysis of the video game as an engine of global anxiety and desire. Attempting to move beyond conventional studies of the video game as a thing-in-itself, relatively self-contained as a textual, ludic, or even technological (in the narrow sense of the word) phenomenon, I propose that gaming has come to operate as an epistemological imperative that extends beyond the site of gaming in itself. Play and pleasure have come to affect sites of culture and the structural formation of various populations beyond those conceived of as belonging to conventional gaming populations: the workplace, consumer experiences, education, warfare, and even the practice of politics itself, amongst other domains. Indeed, the central claim of this dissertation is that the video game operates with the same political and cultural gravity as that ascribed to the prison by Michel Foucault. That is, just as the prison operated as the discursive site wherein the disciplinary imaginary was honed, so too does digital play operate as that discursive site wherein the ludic imperative has emerged. To make this claim, I have had to move beyond the conventional theoretical frameworks utilized in the analysis of video games.
