December 9th 12 clear had Dr Swezey this Mor gave med for chills There was a Physician named Gilbert Hopkins Sweezey who been born and grew up in Brookhaven (1860 census). He appears to have lived in Manhattan (1870 & 1880 census) and both Brookhaven and Queens (1900) and maintained a practice in the Brookhaven area. Louise Smith was attended by G. Swezey, MD, at her death in 1890. 19 A cold day V washing went to Patchogue at night with J Seaman As discussed on pages # 15 and 32, John D. Seaman was a stage coach driver. He apparently had a run to Patchogue. According to the HPDB, John D. Seaman was a “border” in the home of Emily and Jessie Robinson. 21 went to Brooklyn to day Her first visit with Carrie since the marriage? 22 at Carries to day quite pleasant On page # 48, Hannah writes that Carrie lived at 11 Patchen Ave. This is the same address that David, Mary L. and Katie had in the 1880 census. 11 Patchen Ave is almost to the intersection with Broadway in Brooklyn. In 1880, Smith Cox and Alice (Nettie) and Emily Raynor lived at 57 Patchen Ave. In 1870, David and family had lived in the same house with the Cox family. This is about at the corner of Patchen and Lexington Ave, further south toward Fulton Street. S 23 Sun quite pleasant went to Reed St to church Janes United Methodist Church is at the corner of “Reid” Street and Monroe Street, one block west of Patchen Ave. It was named for Edmond Storer Janes (1807-1876) who in 1844 was elected Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The church was dedicated in 1884. A devasting fire destroyed the 101 year old building in 1984. 24 Stormy spent the day at Davids 11 Patchen Ave, same as Carrie 25th all went to Allies to Christmas dinner “Allie” is Ann (Valentine) Cox, wife of Elbert/Albert Cox and mother of Smith Cox. A book on “Cox” genealogy states that Ann Valentine was the daughter of William and Catherine (Smith) Valentine. She was born about 1818. Footnotes for page # 83: 12 clear had Dr Swezey this Mor gave med for chills See, sweezey.com. On page # 82, we noted that Louise Smith was attended by G. Swezey, MD, at her death. This information came from the HPDB for Louisa N. Seaman, who was John Ellis Smith’s wife. Gilbert Hopkins Sweezey (the spelling according to “sweezey.com”) was an interesting person. According to “sweezey.com” he was born in Brookhaven and apparently lived in New York City and, at least in 1900, in both Queens and Brookhaven. This is “Gilbert Hopkins Seezey, who was married to Susan and had many children including a son named “Van Rensselaer” and a daughter named “Charlotte.” In “sweezey.com” his ID # is 100847. Living with parents. 1870 Census - o Living in Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY (28). He appears to be living in a t Boarding House. He is a Physician, and he was born on Long Island. e He is listed as "Swezey, G. Dr." 1880 Census - Living in Brooklyn, s Kings Co., with wife Susan (27), and children: Lillian (5), Dora (4) and Van R. (2). It is possible that all these children were born in Brooklyn, Kings Co., not Suffolk Co. He is listed a "Hubert Sweezy". Everyone was born in NY. He is a 'Physician'. 1900 Census - Brookhaven. With wife(49), son Van R. (22) and daughter Charlotte P (16). Everyone born in NY, except Susan's mother who was born in Mass. Married 26 years, with 8 children, 7 still alive. He is a Physician. Gilber is also listed in the 1900 census for Queens County, New York. Here is the entry: 1900 Census - Living in Queens Co., NY (Apr 1842) with wife Susan (Feb 1851) and children: Lillian (July 1874), Dora (Dec 1877), Sarah (Aug 1880), Florence (Dec 1881), Charles (Sept 1888) and Charlotte (July 1880). Married 26 years with 7 children, all still alive. Everyone born in NY, except Susan's mother (Mass). He is a Physician. Listed as "Gilbert Swezey". Daughter Charlotte is listed as either 16 or 19. There may be more children that I am missing. There is no plot in Yaphank for son Van Rensselaer, though all his other children are buried there. I found a listing on the Internet from the LDS site that shows a son, Frank Robinson Sweezey (b. 30 Dec 1897, Yaphank, Suffolk Co.) to Gilbert Hopkins and Susan Emily Sweezey. If this date is correct, Frank's mother Susan would have been 46 years old, plus I would have seen Frank in the 1900 census. I believe that Frank is a son, but that the birth date is wrong. Since I can not find this family in the 1880 census for Suffolk County, I have no way to verify this son. Frank could have been born in 1879 instead of 1897. This would have made sense, because he would have been 21 years old by 1900, and not living with his parents. I guess it is also possible that he was born in 1897, and died before the 1900 census. I will look for more information before I add him as a son. I just found more information that lists another daughter - Dora Catherine b. 22 dec 1875. I found the 1880 census, and Frank is not listed. I am not sure what to make of that listing I found on the Internet for a son named Frank. If the 1900 census is accurate, I believe I have identified all 8 children. And if one has died by 1900, then it must be son Frank, since all others are alive in 1900. I found Gilbert in the "Directory of Deceased American Physicians 1804 - 1929". And it lists his death date as 9 Oct 1909 in Bay Side, Nassua Co., NY. His practice was in "Allopath", whatever that is. Obit from the New York Times: "SWEZEY - After a short illness, on Sunday, 3 Oct 1909, at North Falmouth, Mass., Gilbert H. Swezey, M.D., in his 68th year. Funeral Services as his late residence, Yaphank, L.I., on Wednesday, Oct. 6." Buried at Yaphank Cemetery, Yaphank, Suffolk County, NY. This from the "Patchogue Advance": "After a short illness, Gilbert H.
