The Singapore rights to shows from HKTV subsidiary, Hong Kong Media Production Company Limited, were acquired from Malaysia’s Astro. Astro said at the end of October that it had secured exclusive Southeast Asia rights to HKTV drama, including The Bor- derline, Paranormal Mind, Once Upon a Song, Love in Time, Hidden Faces and Beyond the Rainbow. The cHK slate airing in Singapore in- cludes The Borderline, which airs on cHK on SingTel Mio TV in Mandarin with the option of a Cantonese sound-track with- in 24 hours of its Hong Kong broadcast. SingTel is running a free preview of the channel until 1 December. The Borderline, the story of a disgraced undercover cop who partners with a criminal to correct wrongdoings, is stripped Monday to Fridays at 10pm.     Facebook, fickleness, and the new populism in the Philippines Assessing Facebook’s role in Rodrigo Duterte’s 2016 presidential campaign and rise to power By Steve Ellmers A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of International Communication Unitec Institute of Technology, 2018 Abstract Although the Philippines’ populist strongman Rodrigo Duterte is often called the Trump of the East his unexpected victory in the 2016 Philippine presidential election has created such a bloody legacy that Duterte’s impact may even outlast his namesake’s. Duterte’s rise to power occurred in the country with the world’s heaviest Facebook users and relied on this social media platform to a far greater extent than any candidate had during the 2010 Philippine presidential contest. This development determined that Facebook would be the main subject of this analysis. This research analyses what happened during the 2016 Philippine presidential election campaign by examining the role Facebook played in Duterte’s success from when his candidacy was formally approved on December 17, 2015, through to the presidential election on May 9, 2016. It subjects two key Facebook accounts, Duterte’s official page and a representative example of one of the hundreds created to support him, to content and discursive analysis. It places Team Duterte’s use of Facebook within the overall context of the campaign and shows how Duterte’s complex and contradictory identity as a candidate was constructed for two very different Facebook audiences. This research also considers how Duterte’s rise was linked to the assistance he received – either intentionally or otherwise – from other members of the Philippine political and media elite.

    Migration and Remittances for Development in Asia Currently, over 80 million people from Asia and the Pacific live and work outside of their countries of origin. Migration and remittances have both positive and negative effects. For the countries, remittances became an important source of foreign exchange. At the household level, remittances enable families to spend more on education and health. However, migration also has a negative social impact, including the exploitation and abuse of workers. This report explores ways to enhance the welfare of migrant workers as well as ways to improve the productive investments of remittances to support the countries’ growth and development. In spite of the outstanding credentials of our speaker, Mr. Arthur R. Tan, President & CEO of Integrated Micro-Electronics, Inc. we only had 102 members attend our rd3 GMM. However, this could be due to the adjusted date to accommodate the availability of our speaker. During our GMM, we also had the MOA signing with Bloomberg TV Philippines arranged by one of our members, Mr. Albert Gamboa. Veteran Broadcast Journalist Ms. Twink Macaraig signed on behalf of Bloomberg TV Philippines. With this MOA, you can expect more FINEX members being asked to appear on Bloomberg TV Philippines as resource persons on various financial and business matters. We also inducted our new members and awarded those who earned more than a hundred points to become a member of the FINEX Century Club. As a testament to the pre-eminent status of FINEX in the financial community, our views were solicited by the various TV stations.
