About Pie Ranch

Pie Ranch, a nonprofit educational farm located on the central California coast is currently seeking a Cascade Operations & Programs Coordinator to join our team.

Pie Ranch envisions a world where:

We work towards these ends via regional partnerships, youth and community education programs, public events, and farmer apprenticeships, all taking place at a working organic farm. Pie Ranch also runs a popular roadside farmstand and recently launched a farm incubator program to give farmers access to land and business opportunities. Currently, Pie Ranch is partnering with other to ameliorate food insecurity brought on by Covid-19 in Bay Area communities by serving as an aggregation and distribution emergency food hub.

Pie Ranch is proud to be a CCOF certified organic farm, and is Food Justice Certified by the Agricultural Justice Project.

About the position:

The Human Resource (or Staff) Manager, reporting to the Director of Finance and Administration will be in charge of maintaining and enhancing the 's human resources by planning, implementing, and evaluating employee relations and human resources policies, programs, and practices. The Staff Manager is responsible for the ​ coordination of all aspects of staffing and pay, including recruitment, job descriptions, contracts, new employee orientation, performance reviews, payroll and benefits , among other responsibilities. The Staff Manager, above all, is responsible for the wellbeing of the staff, their health and happiness as employees.

Key Job Responsibilities:

Human Resources and Staff Management (95%)

● Maintains the work structure by updating job requirements and job descriptions for all positions. ● Manages and processes bi-monthly payroll for employees. ● Maintains the organization of the staff by establishing and leading a recruiting and interviewing program; counseling managers on candidate selection; conducting and analyzing exit interviews; recommending changes. ● Prepares employees for assignments by establishing, leading and conducting orientation and training programs. ● Maintains a pay plan by conducting periodic pay surveys; scheduling and conducting job evaluations; preparing pay budgets; monitoring and scheduling individual pay actions; recommending, planning, and implementing pay structure revisions. ● Ensures planning, monitoring, and appraisal of employee work results by training managers to coach and discipline employees; scheduling management conferences with employees; hearing and resolving employee grievances; counseling employees and supervisors. ● Maintains employee benefits programs through the Zenefits system and informs employees of benefits by studying and assessing benefit needs and trends; recommending benefit programs to management; directing the processing of benefit claims; obtaining and evaluating benefit contract bids; awarding benefit contracts; designing and conducting educational programs on benefit programs. ● Ensures legal compliance by monitoring and implementing applicable human resource federal and state requirements; conducting investigations; maintaining records; representing the organization at hearings if necessary. ● Maintains management guidelines by preparing, updating, and recommending human resource policies and procedures, including the employee handbook. ● Maintains historical human resource records by designing a filing and retrieval system; keeping past and current records. ● Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; and participating in professional societies. ● Manages the Workers Compensation Insurance Policy and annual WCP audit. ● Manages the Agricultural Justice Project annual certification audit. ● Maintains human resource staff job results by counseling and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results. ● Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Volunteer Management Support (5%)

● Prepares volunteer policies and procedures and ensures they are followed. ● Keeps up to date with legislation and policy related to volunteering and making any necessary modifications to accommodate changes; ● Provides support to volunteer coordinators and program teams in the areas of volunteer recruiting, orientation, putting together job descriptions, contracts, MOUs etc.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required:

● Bachelor or Master degree in Human Resources Management (or equivalent) with a minimum 5 years of work experience. ● At least 3 years of proven Human Resources manager role in a non-profit, multicultural and diverse organization. ● Knowledge of Federal and California Employment Legislation. ● Proven experience with hiring, payroll, benefit management, performance review and conflict resolution processes. ● Excellent written and oral communication skills. ● Excellent interpersonal and coaching skills. ● Excellent analytical skills and solution-oriented approach. ● Evidence of the practice of a high level of confidentiality. ● Demonstrated facilitation skills with the ability to hold conflict resolution and build consensus within all levels of the organization. ● Detail-oriented individual with strong organizational and multitasking skills. ● Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive and Google documents. ● Proficiency with appropriate information-technology tools and applications for HR and Volunteer management. ● Ability to work effectively in a demanding, high-energy environment and manage multiple tasks and priorities while maintaining a sense of humor, ● U.S. citizen or legal right to work in the U.S.

Work-Specific:

● Valid California Driver’s License, and ability to drive and access to a vehicle for travel to bank, farm, and other work-related duties. ● Criminal background check required.

Desired:

● Access to computer for work-product development and for communication with colleagues and collaborators, ● Understanding of Pie Ranch mission, vision and values. ● PHR or SPHR certification is a plus. ● Fluent in Spanish. ● Interest in and knowledge of agricultural and food justice issues. ● Understanding of Agricultural Justice Certification. ● Knowledge of education and youth development issues. ● Experience working collaboratively in a team environment with successful outcomes. ● Professional, friendly, and enthusiastic personality. ● Enjoyment of farming and gardening, cooking and baking, and interacting with youth. ● Based in Santa Cruz or San Mateo Counties.

HOURS AND COMPENSATION: ​

This is a part-time (20-25 hrs), exempt, salaried position located in San Mateo County. Salary is commensurate with experience and would range from $54,000 to $62,500 on a FT annual basis. Generous benefits package including medical, dental, vision and 403b plan are offered to employees over 30 hrs. We hope to transition this position to a 30 hour position by 2022.
