One of the central narratives of life in Ceará involves migration and return. Here, I consider the discursive construction of Ceará as a natural, rural and traditional place through processes of migration and through a recording industry that saw migrants as both consumers and icons for a changing urban and national character. However, my emphasis is on the question of return. In keeping with his image as a celebrated loser, Townes had suc- ceeded in redistributing all of his Income. Now he was demanding that he be allowed to bet the bottle of vodka -against a book of Dylan Thomas poetry. Since both the vodka and the book belonged to me, there seemed to be something not quite right about that. I just couldn't quite put my finger on it. Earlier in the evening (morn- ing)?, Townes's fiddle player had talked about how much better it was to play for someone as stable as Townes. He had previously played for Billy Joe Shaver. Townes and Billy Joe have more in common than just a fid- dle player and a certain ir- repressible flair for excess. Both have underground reputations for writing brilliant songs that belong above ground. Playback And both have new albums and TOM PETTY and THE HEARTBREAKERS.. ..Raw power and more reissues of old albums out show- ing what kind of music crea- tive—if vulnerable — genius is capable of producing. Townes Van Zandt's new album is Flyin' Shoes and Billy Joe Shaver's is Gypsy Boy. Cheap Trick and Tom Petty When Townes sings a song about puttin' on his flyin' shoes, don't expect some happy little Leo Sayers ditty.

    I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead: The Dirty Life and Times of Warren Zevon (Crystal Zevon) February 23, 2019 To the extent you have heard of Warren Zevon, it is probably because David Letterman devoted an entire episode of Late Night to him when Zevon was dying, in 2002. That appearance shined up Zevon’s star, which had faded greatly since his glory days in the 1970s. It was not the mere fact of Zevon’s appearance, it was his sardonic humor about his own looming death from mesothelioma, combined with the fact that he was going down like a man, refusing any treatment and instead finishing his last album. Such bravery, a virtue of the old school, com- bined with VH1’s simultaneous soft-focus documentary on his life, gave Zevon an aura of virtue. This book seems to have been designed, with his consent, to mostly dispel that aura. I’ve always liked Zevon. He probably counts as my favorite pop singer, and since I have zero appreciation for any classical music, I guess that makes him my favorite musical artist (although a few others might be it instead). But until I read this book and did some other research, I knew very little about him. (I also absolutely loathe his most famous song, “Werewolves of London.”) I don’t typically buy much music, but even in the 1990s I had bought several of his albums, to which I regularly listened. I used his 1996 double-album compilation, also titled “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead,” as play-on-repeat music on transatlantic flights, when portable CD players were the height of technology.
