Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra welcomes five-time Grammy® Award winner for in Concert October 18, 2014

Calgary, AB: Five time Grammy® Award winner and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Mary Chapin Carpenter joins the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra for one very special orchestral performance.

Mary Chapin Carpenter, vocals Mary Chapin Carpenter will join the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra for a very special evening of songs from her debut orchestral record, Songs from the Movie. Arranged and conducted by six-time Grammy® Award winner Vince Mendoza (Sting, Diana Krall, Elvis Costello, Joni Mitchell) and produced by (Keith Urban, Lyle Lovett), Mendoza and Carpenter, Songs From The Movie harkens to Carpenter’s love of classic film and symphonic music. The features new interpretations of ten beloved songs by Carpenter, including Come On Come On, On And On It Goes, I Am A Town and Goodnight America.

Over the course of her career, Carpenter has recorded 13 and sold over 13 million records, won five Grammy® Awards, was named the Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year in 1992 and 1993, has won two Academy of Country Music awards, one Emmy® Award, and, in 2012, was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Her songs speak to the most personal of life’s details and the most universal.

This very special performance will feature Carpenter alongside the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and will feature original orchestral arrangements from Vince Mendoza.

Vince Mendoza, conductor Vince Mendoza has been at the forefront of the jazz and contemporary music scenes as a composer, conductor, and recording artist for the last 20 years. He has written compositions and arrangements for big band as well as for chamber and symphonic ensembles, and his jazz composing credits read like a Who’s Who of today’s modern instrumentalists and singers. Mr. Mendoza was recognized as Best Composer/Arranger by Swing Journal’s critics poll in Japan. His CD Epiphany featured his compositions played by the London Symphony Orchestra, and El Viento and Jazzpaña further pushed the boundaries of jazz and flamenco music. His new album, Nights on Earth, features works arranged for small and large ensembles, with guest appearances by Luciana Souza, Malian vocalist Tom Diakite, and musicians from Spain, Brazil, and Africa. Mr. Mendoza’s arrangements have appeared on critically acclaimed projects including dozens of albums with songwriters such as Björk, Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau, Bobby McFerrin, Melody Gardot, Sting, and Joni Mitchell. He has received six Grammy® Awards and 28 Grammy® nominations.

Honorary conductor of the Netherlands Metropole Orchestra, he also appears frequently as a guest conductor with orchestras throughout Europe, the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom. Mr. Mendoza has been commissioned to compose and create arrangements for the Turtle Island String Quartet, Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Metropole Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, West German Broadcasting, and the BBC. His music was featured at the Berlin Jazz Festival, and he has performed at the Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals.
