A Magical Calendar for 2020 the Middle Tennessee Magic Club IBM A Magical Calendar for 2020 compliments of The Middle Tennessee Magic Club The International Brotherhood of Magicians Ring 252 - Murfreesboro, Tennessee www.IBMring252.com “The Sam Walkoff Ring” The Middle Tennessee Magic Club (also known as The Sam Walkoff Ring) is part of the International Brotherhood of Magicians (Ring 252). We meet the first Tuesday of each month (except January & June) at 7:02 PM Central Time at the Linebaugh Library, 105 West Vine Street, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee USA. We hope you can drop by and visit us soon. It is our pleasure to offer you this special 2020 calendar with our compliments. You’ll find many of this year’s local, regional, national, and international magic events listed along with plenty of room for you to write in your own favorites. We hope you find it useful and that you think of us each time you pick it up. Below we’ve listed our Ring’s Meeting Schedule for 2020. Ring President Alan Fisher is continuing the vision he started last year of us being a Learning Ring. We’ll begin every meeting a member of the Ring presenting a mini-lecture and then a member will conduct a Teach-A-Trick. From there we’ll move into Open Time to give everybody, members & guests, a chance to perform as much as they’d like (so bring some magic to share when you visit us). Then we’ll take care of any business. Directions to our meeting location are in the back of this calendar. Our Ring also sponsors a youth magic club that continues to grow. “The Amazing Abner Youth Magic Club”, named in honor of the stage character created by the late Jim Ford (a longtime Ring 252 member) now has two chapters. The newest club meets on the first Saturday of every month at the Smyrna Library, address, in Smyrna, TN USA starting at 9:30 AM. The original club meets the second Saturday of every month at 9:30 AM in the Linebaugh Library in Murfreesboro. Various members of the Ring assist Murfreesboro “Head Master” Jimbo Hooten and Smyrna “Head Master” John Case each month. And the best part of all - it’s free to the kids! Ring 252 or the guest instructors pick up the cost of all props used that month. So the kids get to take the effect home that they learned. 2020 is shaping up to be a most memorable year for The Middle Tennessee Magic Club and we don’t want you to miss a moment of the fun! Keep up with all our events and happenings at our award winning web site, www.IBMring252.com. Remember, the magic red carpet is always rolled out for you an I.B.M Ring 252! IBM Ring 252 2020 Meeting Schedule January 4th- special date and location Annual post-Holiday Holiday Bash This year’s Post-Holiday Bash will be held at BJ’s Brewhouse and Restaurant (2455 Medical Center Parkway) in Murfreesboro starting at 7 PM. February 4th We officially kick things off in 2020 with a mini-lecture from Ring Treasurer Rob Covert on the topic of misdirection. IBM Ring 252 2020 Meeting Schedule continued March 3rd March roars in like a lion with a mini-Lecture or Teach-A-Trick from Dr. Gary Flegal. April 7th We’ll meet virtually at www.MyMagicMeeting.com/zoom-meetings/ring-252/ at 7:02 PM Central Time (as always). Immediate Ring Past President and “headmaster” of the original chapter of our The Amazin’ Abner Youth Magic Club Jimbo Hooten will conduct a Teach-A-Trick or mini-Lecture for us. Then we’ll have as a special surprise guest speaker provided by the IBM - Jessica Jane May 5th Once again we’ll meet virtually at www.MyMagicMeeting.com/zoom-meetings/ring-252/. Put your creativity hat on and see if you can come up with a routine for any effect that prominently uses a non-magic item in the presentation or method. Plus we’ll have as our special guest David Parr. June 2nd Because they’ve been so popular, we’ll again meet virtually at www.MyMagicMeeting.com/zoom-meetings/ ring-252/. As this was a unplanned meeting, surprize us with something new or different. And we’ll have another special guest provided by the IBM - Jon Armstrong. July 7th In July we’ll meet again virtually at www.MyMagicMeeting.com/zoom-meetings/ring-252/. Our very special Guest Speaker will be 2 time World Champion of Magic and past International President of the IBM (and a member of Ring 252) Shawn Farquhar. August 8h (tentative) - special location Annual Ring Picnic & Magic Flea Market Provided the world is back to semi-normal, we’ll be holding our annual Magic Flea Market Swap ‘n Sell. Bring your gently-used magical items to sell or just stop buy to browse. Table space is free to Ring 252 members, $10 for nonmembers (it costs nothing to shop). There will be no Business meeting, Review, mini-Lecture or Magic Open Time on this night. SPECIAL LOCATION: this will be held at Florence Church of Christ, 6732 Old Nashville Highway, in Murfreesboro. Date subject to change. Check our website, www.IBMRing252.com, for updates. September 1st September has Ring Sergeant-at-Arms David Scott leading us in a mini-Lecture or Teach-A-Trick. October 6th Vice President David Williams will conduct the mini-Lecture or Teach-A-Trick this month. November 3rd President Alan Fisher will conduct a Teach-A-Trick. December 1st 2021 Election of Officers and Twisted Santa Challenge After we elect the 2021 Ring Officers the fun really begins with a special challenge. Our own Andrew Hyder from Tennessee Magic Emporium will provide several small effects, each in their own gift bag. Those accepting the challenge can grab one of the bags. You’ll have 15 minutes to examine the contents and come up with any kind of routine. Those who can perform something with the contents get to keep them. Sounds like a fun way to end the year. Adrian Smith, then current Dean of the Society of American Magicians. At the time, Harold as he was known to his friends, had the largest magic library in the world. Often Harold was a dinner guest at our house and as usual after our meal “the boys” would discuss magic and collecting. Harold’s plan for his books and ephemera was to donate it all to his alma mater, Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. As we all know that’s what happened to his collection. Ed on the other hand disagreed with Harold’s plan and said that when the time came for him to dissolve his library he wanted everything to be sold; so that other collectors could enjoy what he had amassed.

  • Ray Goulet by David Goodsell
Heart and Soul a Collector! Ray Goulet By David Goodsell The wonderful things about a personal tour of Ray Goulet’s Mini Magic Musuem are the stories, the personal details about who previously owned the items and how Ray came to acquire them. Ray showed me three coin wands from the late 1800s. “I got these about 15 years ago from the estate of John Brown Cook, a great amateur magician who lived in New York City. He was great friends with Vernon, Carlyle, Slydini, and everyone else in New York. Cook was very wealthy and owned two Mercedes automobiles, with vanity plates that said Mr. Cook and Mrs. Cook.” Holding the wands in what can only be described as “with affection,” Ray continued. “All three are the same,” he told me, “but one is nickel plated, the second brass and the third a kind of gray, treated metal with black tips. I am familiar with Brema’s work and am pretty sure they were made by him. This looks like his work. These wands used 1800s half dollars, and look, the original half dollars are still in them – 1867, and 1889.” That is the icing on the collector’s cake! Turning toward the huge Houdini Master Mystifier “Bur- ied Alive” poster on the south wall, Ray rested his hand on the post of an upright frame holding well over a dozen small frames of glass, tilted in opposition, zig-zagging down the center of the frame. On top of the frame was a top hat. Picking up a goblet containing several coins, Ray explained how it worked.

It was evident, early on, that this collection would benefitanyone serious about getting serious in magic. So here we are. Thanks to all the generous magicians who have allowed me to include their work in this collection. I am overwhelmed by the support they have shown. In particular, I wish to single out Darwin Ortiz, whose writings I admire greatly, and who went against a personal policy, and agreed to participate. I consider it a favor to me, and a favor to all those who will learn from his writings. Thanks, Darwin, for being flexible and generous. Thanks to Stephen Minch, whose encouragement and “pull” helped initiate the project. Irving Quant helped with the translation of “Fundamentals of Illusionism” by Juan Tamariz. Denis Behr suggested a few essays I was not familiar with.
