Weber State University

Child Care Connector Summer Quarter Jul, Aug & Sept 2016

CAC - Weber State is… Finally, the cold temperatures have given way to warm weather that invites us Chloe Merrill PhD outside to enjoy the summer months. Summer is a time that is met with much Executive Director anticipation but also lends to those lazy days of just wanting to hang out with Leslie Trottier friends and go play. For us in the child care world we must remain on our toes 801-626-7861 and make sure we are watching those children while they are the ones hanging Director out and being summertime crazy with friends. Remember, sunscreen is our Gina O’Driscoll friend, as is hats and lots and lots of water. Children should not be out playing in 801-626-7662 the worst heat of the day, alter your outdoor time so that children go outside in Infant Toddler Specialist the morning and then later in the afternoon. Remind children while they are outside the shade is a good place to play and that they need to be drinking water Crystal Knippers while they play. 801-626-8083 Provider Services Coordinator Summer is also a great time for us as caregivers to look at our professional Megan Jolley development plan, make sure we are meeting our goals and setting new goals. 801-626-8047  The Care About Childcare criteria will be open again for approval of new and Child Care Program Coach renewed criteria in July. Tip #72 – Create a Solid Message -taken from 100 Ideas to Market your Childcare Business by Taffy Gallagher

Knowing how you want your business to be perceived is extremely important, even before you begin creating brochures or deciding which community events to sponsor. Take the time to write down who you are, what services you provide and how you want to be perceived by families in the community. Once you’ve done that, market yourself effectively. Writing down your message early on ensures consistency and saves time by preventing you from the need to reinvent it every time you want to run a promotion, add a page to your Web site. The core of your work has already been done.

To help you begin, think about the answers to the following questions: If someone else described your program, what would they say? How is your program different from others? What type of services do you provide that are unique or rare? What is your vision for how you want your program to be perceived by others? What is the most important thing you want people to know about your business? What are the benefits to a family if they select your program?

Once you have created your message, contact us to find out how to load it to your free marketing page located on the statewide Care About Childcare website! Attention all Caregivers! With the Child Care Development Fund (CCDF) reauthorization there are new mandatory topics that need to be covered in preservice training. This training must be completed by every person who provides care to children in a program that receives any money from the Office of Child Care (OCC); including subsidies, grants, and the Professional Development Award. Caregivers who work at licensed centers and homes, at any license-exempt program that receives money from OCC, including after school programs, Residential Certificate holders, and FFN Approved providers, need the preservice training. For new programs and caregivers, the preservice training must be completed before they care for children. For current caregivers, the CCDF required preservice training must be completed by August 31, 2016. The mandatory preservice training will be available beginning March 1st from your local Care About Childcare, Child Care Licensing, and the Utah Afterschool Network. After completing the training, certificates will need to be submitted to Child Care Licensing or the Child Care Professional Development Institute (CCPDI). Effective October 1, 2016, any program who has not submitted a preservice training completed certificate for each caregiver will not receive any payments from OCC, including subsidies and grants.

The Professional Family Childcare Association of Utah (PFCCA) provides support and benefits to Family Child Care providers all over the state. We’d love to have you join us! Thank you to all providers and community members that joined us for our Spring Provider Appreciation Conference! Our day with Emily Plank was a wonderful opportunity for learning and growth. Thank you to everyone who makes this association great! PFCCA continues to provide valuable benefits for members. This year alone we have awarded 3 CDA scholarships and 12 scholarships to the NAFCC Institute to be held in July in San Diego California! As of June 1 PFCCA will suspend accepting applications for CDA and Family Child Care Class scholarhips and reimbursements. Ongoing benefits will be announced in Fall 2016 pending a budget review by the PFCCA board. For current resources and benefits make sure you check our newly redesigned website at www.pfcca.org! PFCCA Book Club Pick – This quarter’s book club pick is Play by Stuart Brown. The book explores the importance of play in our lives – how it shapes the brain, opens the imagination, and invigorates the soul! CAC - Weber State’s Training Policies

You must pre-register. You will not be considered registered in our classes until we receive the registration form and your payment. We require that you pre-register for our classes for a couple of reasons: 1- Due to the amount of materials we distribute in class, we need to have an accurate count of how many providers will be attending each one and enough time to prepare them. 2- Weber State University has set strict guidelines for us to follow when handling money. They will not allow any money to remain in the office unsecured, overnight. We also do not want to put your information at risk by having it sit on a desk overnight. It is for your privacy and safety that we request you send in your money. Registration forms must be sent through the mail. Money can not be accepted at the training. Each registration form will let you know where to send it. Please check the training schedule page on our website (weber.edu/cac) to see if a class is full or has been rescheduled or cancelled.

All training participants must review and sign the Statewide Professional Development System Code of Conduct each time you register. If there is no signature, your registration form will be sent back for you to sign. We will not be able to hold your spot in any class and you may miss out on the class that you want to register for. We are not able to register anyone for a class without the signed copy of the Code of Conduct.

The registration form has the information we need for the Utah State Training Registry and must be filled out in full. An incomplete registration form will delay your registration and you may miss the class you are trying to register if it fills before we can collect the information we need. If you have any questions about the information we collect, you can contact our office at 801-626-7784.

If you are sending registrations for more than one person, you must include a registration form for each person and each person must sign the Training Participant Code of Conduct. The form has the information we need for the Utah State Training Registry, without it we cannot register you for any of our classes. Also, each person must sign a copy of the Utah State Professional Development System Code of Conduct. Without that signature, no one will be able to attend classes.

Registration for each class will close 7 days prior to the start of class. No registrations will be accepted within a week of the class' start date. This will give us time to prepare the right amount of materials.

We register for classes one quarter at a time. You may register only for the classes listed in our current newsletter. Each quarter's class schedule and registration form can be found in our quarterly newsletter, the Child Care Connector. The newsletter is published every September, December, March and June. The schedule and registration form will also be posted on our website shortly after it has been sent in the mail.

Sorry, we are not able to issue a refund. If we receive money from you for a class that is already full, we can give you the option of sending the check back to you or sending you a credit voucher. When a class is full, it will be posted on the training schedule page on our website at weber.edu/cac. You can always call our office at 801-626-7837 to check if the class is full before sending in the registration form or check our online schedule.

If you are unable to attend a class and you call at least three days before the first session starts, we can send you a credit voucher. Sorry, we are not able to refund money. Please be sure to call during office hours 8am-4:00pm. You can reach us either at 801-626-7837, 801-626-7784, or toll free at 1- 888-970-0101. We cannot issue a credit voucher if you fail to notify us before the first session of a class.

Each 10 hour class is broken down into four sessions. If you miss one or two session(s) in a class, no money can be refunded. However, you can make it up when that session is taught again, without repaying. You also have the option of making-up the session you missed with another CAC agency without having to pay again. We have an agreement with our sister agencies that allows you to make up one or two sessions with them. Just contact them for their times and registration policies.

To register for a make-up session with us, simply fill out the registration form and circle the dates you need to make up, write "make-up" in the amount enclosed section and send it in. Be sure to include the signed Code of Conduct with the form. We have a limited number of make-up slots available for each night so please let us know if you are registered for a make-up session and are unable to attend.

We need to have a minimum number of providers enrolled to conduct the class. Classes, which don't meet these minimum numbers five days before the class, will be either cancelled or rescheduled. We will notify you and send you a credit voucher for another class.

Classes may be canceled due to weather. We follow Weber State University's policies regarding this issue. If the campus is closed, our classes will be canceled. If not, classes will be held. Information on Curiosity and Questioning

What is it? From very young ages, children are driven to learn about the world around them. They are curious about the people, places, and things they see and experience. Through their explorations, they learn vocabulary, how things work, and whether they can effect changes. This helps them acquire knowledge that they can build on throughout their lifetimes. When children are curious about something, they become engrossed in their exploration of it. They lean in to get a closer look, focus their attention, show surprise, spontaneously describe what they see, or ask questions about it. Support your child’s curiosity by sharing wonder, providing a safe environment, introducing new experiences, and offering ways to delve into things that capture your child’s interest. Observe and Respond It may look to you as if your child is just playing with an object, but playing engages all of a child’s senses in learning about a new material. Encourage your child’s sense of wonder by taking walks to listen to sounds you hear or to smell how fresh it is following a spring rain. Go new places together. Make predictions about what you might see before you go. It doesn’t matter if your child’s predictions prove correct, as long as they build curiosity about the event. Encourage curiosity by letting your child take apart items you no longer use: and old radio, sewing machine, or tape recorder and screwdriver can stimulate new discoveries (be sure to remove electrical cords). Grab your child’s attention by stopping before the end of a book; finish it later. Wonder out loud about things you see, read, or hear. Model your excitement about new things by commenting on a plant breaking through the soil or a spider web strung between two branches in a tree. If your child tends to choose the same type of toys or materials, encourage other choices. For example, if your child plays with blocks most of the time, expand on this interest by suggesting toy cars, which can drive on roads built from blocks. Keep toys organized so your child can easily find them. Put some toys away for a while. When you bring them out again, your child may have a renewed interest. Learn about new things by reading books. Check out a variety of books from your local library. Invite but do not force your child to join a new activity. Your participation may encourage your child to try it. Say something like “Let’s go listen and see what we can find out” or “Let’s go try it and see what this is about.” Around the age of three years, children begin to seek answers to more and more questions. They ask “Why?” about most everything. While the number of questions can sometimes be unsettling, it is good to know that your child is curious about new things. Take the time to respond to these questions; remember that no question is stupid, even when you are tired of answering. If you are in the middle of something and can’t take a break, keep a list of questions to answer later. Be sure to come back to your list. If you don’t know an answer, find out together – first, your child can describe the question, and then the two of you can determine how the information can be found. Get answers by looking together for information in books, online, from someone who knows, or by experimenting to discover answers. If you get really stuck, try turning the question back to your child. Ask, “What do you think might happen? Why do you think it would be that way?” Ask questions of your own, such as “How did you learn that? What did you do first? What happened next?” Allow your child time to think before expecting an answer or asking another question. Connecting with Support If you notice that your child is not very inquisitive, doesn’t try new things, or doesn’t ask questions about new things or experiences, talk with your child’s teacher. Seek additional assistance if your child usually wanders around without becoming occupied by activities other than TV or electronics, shows little interest in nearby people and things, is so fascinated by something that you cannot draw his or her attention, or is so fearful of trying new things that your child’s learning seems to be affected.

Dropping Objects

Invite your baby to practice dropping things, especially things that make a noise when they land. Picking up and dropping objects helps your baby gain more control of the muscles in her hands.

Why this is important? At this age, your baby can hold things very well but cannot always let them go when she wants. Opening her fingers is a different process from closing them, and learning to control the muscles in her hands will take a lot of time and practice. Early hand control helps her manipulate objects during play. Later, she will need to control the muscles in her hands when she starts holding crayons and pencils for drawing.

What you do

• Show her a toy in your hand. When she looks at it, open your fingers and let the toy drop. • Repeat the motion, saying Drop as it falls. Keep a short dropping distance so she’ll be able to see your hand and the dropped object at the same time. • Encourage her to try after you have shown her several times. • Give an enthusiastic response with each attempt she makes. Wow! You dropped the block by yourself! • Play again using a ball that bounces or a bell that makes a noise when it hits the floor. She may show more interest in a toy that produces sound when dropped. • Listen for any sounds she makes when she lets go of the ball. This is her attempt to imitate you when you say, Drop.

Another Idea Try playing the game with the sand and water table. Dropping objects in the water makes a fun splash that may encourage her to continue practicing her new skill.

When, How, Why?

In daily events or after reading a book, occasionally ask a question that begins with one of the words when, how, or why. These questions will stimulate your child to think more deeply about time, processes, and reasons.

Why is this important? Asking when, how, or why questions will deepen the level of your child’s thinking. To answer them he will need to talk about time, process, and reasons. This encourages him to give longer answers with several parts. Thinking about how and why are some of the hardest tasks we do throughout life. This early practice can give your child a pattern of successful thinking to follow and to build on as he grows older. When he answers questions during book reading, he is building his early literacy skills.

What you do

• Ask your child when, how, and why questions during conversation or reading. When do we eat breakfast? How did you dig that deep hole? Why did the three bears go for a walk? • Give your child plenty of time to think about his answers to these challenging questions. Return to simpler questions if he struggles to answer. • Pause after reading a page of a book together and ask one of the questions, so he can think about the story.

Another Idea Continue to ask questions that gently test your child’s knowledge. Many everyday moments such as riding in the car, taking a bath, or drawing with chalk can offer opportunities for question-and- answer sessions with your child.
