Throughout history, comedy has seen short shrift in both critical reception and academic investigation. Merit is simply placed on drama far before that of comedy.

  • Parody As Brand: the Case of [Adult Swim]'S Paracasual Advergames
Article Convergence: The International Journal of Research into Parody as brand: The New Media Technologies 2016, Vol. 22(2) 177–198 ª The Author(s) 2014 case of [adult swim]’s Reprints and permission: sagepub.co.uk/journalsPermissions.nav paracasual advergames DOI: 10.1177/1354856514546097 con.sagepub.com David Gurney Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi, USA Matthew Thomas Payne University of Alabama, USA Abstract Advergames – a neologism for video games designed to advertise a product or service – are marketing devices employed to impact consumers’ purchasing decisions and, more frequently, shape their impressions of a promoted brand. The online advergames of the programming block- turned media brand [adult swim] (AS) present a clear case in which the games act as rich signifiers of brand aesthetics even if they are not directly connected to the content of the brand’s television shows, live events, and other assorted merchandise. Although these ‘casual’-style titles have game- play mechanics that are accessible to broad audiences, these advergames often exhibit a critical stance toward other games, which differentiates them from the vast majority of casual games on the market. But rather than being anti-casual, we argue that these games are best understood as being paracasual because they use parody to both trouble prevailing definitions of casual games and advergames, and deploy an aesthetic disposition that further helps define the brand. Further- more, they are an increasingly visible and vital component of a constellation of texts and practices that function as what James Paul Gee calls an ‘affinity space’ for a lucrative audience demographic.

Southwestern Mass Communication Journal A journal of the Southwest Education Council for Journalism & Mass Communication ISSN 0891-9186 | Vol. 34 No. 2 ‘Number One in the Hood, G:’ How Hip Hop Helped Adult Swim Get to the Top Jared Bahir Browsh University of Colorado, Boulder This paper examines the intersection of race, Hip-Hop Culture, and animation on Adult Swim and its programs while also comparing general trends in animated content surrounding the network’s debut and subsequent success. Animation has largely been produced by white creators featuring white characters aimed mainly at a white audience. Adult Swim has expanded animation beyond the white family sitcom so often seen in popular adult animated television programs to feature groups, styles, and ideas not often seen in television, either in animation or live- action programming. Hip Hop has been hugely influential on American culture, and by exploring its impact on race in animation and the success of the network among the highly valuable 18-49 demographic, the paper aims to contribute to research concerning racial and cultural representations in the United States. Keywords: race, animation, television, Hip Hop, culture, African American culture, Ethnic Studies, Media Studies nimation has a long, complicated history with race and non-white culture. In its over 100 years as an art form and an industry, animators have struggle to include culturally sensitive representations of people of color, particularly African Americans. One reason for this is that white males have dominated the production and distribution of animation since its beginnings Ain the early 20th century. Until recently, the insular nature of the industry has limited entry into the production side of animation, and the white male perspective has been the primary viewpoint presented in animation (Maltin, 1987) The barriers to entry into the animation industry has also helped maintain strong ties to the past.

  • For the Networks, Season Didn't Rate Page 1 of 7
For the networks, season didn't rate Page 1 of 7 For the networks, season didn't rate Strike, DVRs drove numbers to record lows By James Hibberd May 22, 2008, 07:16 PM Updated: May 23, 2008, 12:59 PM Related ABC and NBC in virtual eve newscast ratings tie Chart: Season wrap Chart: Show ratings by demo Charts: Complete season wrap package It will go down as one of the strangest and most difficult periods in broadcast television history: The 2007-08 season, where a perfect storm of a WGA strike, rocketing DVR penetration and the rapid expansion of the video marketplace resulted in the lowest-rated season on record. Before the strike even hit, the season launched with worrisome news: Hit shows were returning down an average of about 8% in the ratings from the previous year. Yet as the weeks ticked by, some networks still had positive stories to tell. Fox was gaining traction in the fall and ABC's new shows were finding fans. "The season got off to a very good start, but what ended up happening was like a car that started picking up speed and then ran into a wall," said Bill Carroll, director of programming at Katz Television Group. As the season rolled over into 2008, NBC countered the strike with a surge of reality programming. "The Biggest Loser: Couples," a celebrity edition of "The Apprentice" and the debut of "American Gladiators" initially proved effective counter-strike programming. And once the walkout concluded, there were more upbeat headlines as CBS enjoyed record ratings for the return of its Monday night comedy block.

Kelly Victoria Widdicks December 2019 Understanding and Mitigating the Impact of Internet Demand in Everyday Life Kelly Victoria Widdicks School of Computing and Communications, Lancaster University This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. December 2019 Abstract Digital devices and online services are increasingly embedded within our everyday lives. The growth in usage of these technologies has implications for environmental sustainability due to the energy demand from the underlying Internet infrastructure (e.g. communication networks, data centres). Energy efficiencies in the infrastructure are important, but they are made inconsequential by the sheer growth in the demand for data.

  • Episode 3.10 a Trickle of Ladies with Amber Nash
Secret Feminist Agenda Transcript Episode 3.10 A Trickle of Ladies with Amber Nash December 7, 2018 Hannah (Host): 00:06 [Music: "Mesh Shirt" by Mom Jeans] Hi, I'm Hannah McGregor and this is Secret Feminist Agenda. And now that November is over by logical extension, we can conclude that it is December. We're doing it folks, we're counting forward through months in sequential order. Which maybe for some of us is a better time of year and maybe for others is harder. I know that the holidays are really complicated time, and in honor of that complication, I have just reshared and added some new tunes to my Sad Christmas Jams playlist on Spotify, which I will totally link to in this episode. And maybe I will also share with you that I am trying hard this year to use December as an opportunity to slow down and do a little bit of reflecting on this year, and think a little bit about what I want next year to look like. I know that that is a pretty standard approach to the new year, and I also know that that approach can often be tied into really toxic ideas of self improvement. But I also feel like, especially because, you know, working at a university, my year is charted around the, sort of, you know, the break over the holidays, these kinds of like, structured measures of time. It still is an opportunity for me to slow down a little bit, think about what I accomplished, revisit what I prioritiZe, think for myself about to what degree those were the right priorities, and what I want 2019 to look like.
