Review The Stem Cell Revolution Revealing Protozoan Parasites’ Secrets and Paving the Way towards Vaccine Development Alena Pance The Wellcome Sanger Institute, Genome Campus, Hinxton Cambridgeshire CB10 1SA, UK; [email protected] Abstract: Protozoan infections are leading causes of morbidity and mortality in humans and some of the most important neglected diseases in the world. Despite relentless efforts devoted to vaccine and drug development, adequate tools to treat and prevent most of these diseases are still lacking. One of the greatest hurdles is the lack of understanding of host–parasite interactions. This gap in our knowledge comes from the fact that these parasites have complex life cycles, during which they infect a variety of specific cell types that are difficult to access or model in vitro. Even in those cases when host cells are readily available, these are generally terminally differentiated and difficult or impossible to manipulate genetically, which prevents assessing the role of human factors in these diseases. The advent of stem cell technology has opened exciting new possibilities to advance our knowledge in this field. The capacity to culture Embryonic Stem Cells, derive Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells from people and the development of protocols for differentiation into an ever-increasing variety of cell types and organoids, together with advances in genome editing, represent a huge resource to finally crack the mysteries protozoan parasites hold and unveil novel targets for prevention and treatment. The parasite's mobility and the ability of oysters to recover from snail parasitism may be important in assessing the impact ofparasitism on oyster populations. Duringa 4-week exposure period in the field, B. impressa reduced American oyster, CrasS08trea virgillica, growth rate and increased the intensity ofinfection by the protozoan, Perki71/J'U8 (- Dermoeystidium) marillUB, but produced few changes in the oyster's biochemical composition because. although net productivity was reduced, the oysters retained a net positive energy balance (assimilation> respiration). During a 4-week recovery period, growth rate returned to normal (control) levels, but infection by P. marillUB continued to intensify in previously parasitized oysters kept B. impressa-free. Most changes in biochemical com position during recovery, including increased lipid and glycogen contents, could be attributed to the con tinuing increase in infection intensity of P. marillUB. Consequently, the temporal stability and size of snail patches. particularly as they regulate infection by P. marillUB, may be the most important factors influencing the impact of B. impressa on oyster reefs. Journal of Applied Biotechnology & Bioengineering Research Article Open Access Prevalence of intestinal protozoan infection among patients in Hawassa city administration millennium health center, Ethiopia Abstract Volume 5 Issue 4 - 2018 Current retrospective study was carried out from April to May, 2009 E.C. to determine the prevalence of intestinal protozoan parasitic infection in Hawassa city administration Beyene Dobo millennium health center from 2004-2008 E.C. From the study, a total of 89423 peoples of Hawassa University, Ethiopia both males and females were examined for various intestinal protozoan parasitic infection test. From these 39895(44.61%) were positive to intestinal protozoan parasitic infection. According to the current study the infection of intestinal protozoan such as: Entamoeba histolytica/dispar and Giardia lambila were highly distributed in Hawassa city administration millennium health center. So, to minimize or inhibit the spread and impact of its infection all community members should get awareness for proportion of personal and environmental hygiene and this should be the responsibility of all individuals. -

Amebiasis is responsible for approximately 70,000 deaths annually every year. High prevalence is found especially in endemic area which had poor hygiene and sanitation or crowded population. Human is the main reservoir, while the disease can be transmited by mechanical vector such as cokckroach and flies. Making diagnosis of intestinal amebiasis sometimes can be a problem. Clinical presentation and disease severity may be varied. Complication due to late management of the disease can be fatal. Lifestyle education, early diagnosis
