"A fiddler's fiddler" is how violinist SERGIU LUCA was described by a reviewer in the Washington Post. This is typical praise for a concert personality who has enjoyed a world-wide career. He combines an unparalleled diversity of repertoire with inspired virtuosity as a soloist with orchestras as well as in recitals annually at major music centers around the world. A native of Rumania, Mr. Luca made his debut with Israel's Haifa Symphony at the age of nine. Following his studies in England and Switzerland, he came to the to study with the legendary pedagogue Ivan Galamian at the Curtis Institute. Soon after his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1965, he was chosen by Leonard Bernstein to play the Sibelius Violin with the New York Philhar­ monic for a special CBS television network tribute to the Finnish composer. He has subsequently performed with many of the world's leading orchestras in Europe, Israel, Latin America, and the US., including the Cleveland, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Houston, Baltimore, Atlanta, and National Symphony Orchestras, as well as the Israel Philharmonic, New Philharmonia of London, and the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra. Sergiu Luca's many recordings attest to his sensitivity for varied styles and peri­ ods of music. He made a sensation with his recordings of the complete unaccompa­ nied works ofJ. S. Bach, the first rendering on an original instrument. Subsequent recordings ofmusic by Bart6k, Schumann, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Tartini, Janacek, and William Balcom, as well as orchestral recordings with Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony and David Zinman and the Rochester Philharmonic gained him international acclaim. As a recitalist, Sergiu Luca has performed throughout North America and in Europe, Mexico, and Japan. He has collaborated with such keyboard artists as Albert Fuller, Emanuel Ax, Anne Epperson, Joseph Kalichstein, Malcolm Bilson, Peter Serkin, Brian Connelly, and Gustav Leonhardt. Sergiu Luca is the Dorothy Richard Starling Professor of Classical Violin at The Shepherd School of Music. He is also the founder of the presenting organiza­ tions Chamber Music Northwest and Da Camera of Houston, and of the ensemble CONTEXT, which was formed in 1994.

Pianist BRIAN CONNELLY is recognized as an artist of exceptional range and accomplishment in both historical and modern repertoires: recent performances in­ clude music as diverse as the complete Vingt Regards sur /'En/ant-Jesus by Olivier Messiaen, the complete Schubert song cycles, works of Mozart and Haydn on forte­ piano, and ragtime recitals with jazz pianist Marcus Roberts. He appears frequently with artists such as violinist Sergiu Luca, cellist Gary Hoffman, clarinetist Charles Neidich, and flutist Carol Wincenc. He performed over 150 solo and chamber works for Da Camera of Houston in its gound-breaking first six seasons, and recently ap­ peared in the Carnegie Hall "Making Music" series in a tribute to composer William Balcom. Mr. Connelly is Artist Teacher of Piano at The Shepherd School of Music. A multi-faceted musician, MICHAEL WEBSTER is known as clarinetist, con­ ductor, composer, arranger, and pedagogue. Formerly principal clarinetist with the Rochester Philharmonic and the San Francisco Symphony, he has also appeared as soloist with many orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Boston Pops. He has performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the 92nd Street Y, the Tokyo, Cleveland, Muir, Ying, Leont6vych, and Chester String Quartets, and the festivals of Marlboro, Santa Fe, Angel Fire, Norfolk, Steamboat Springs,

Chamber Music West and Northwest, Victoria, Stratford, Domaine Forget, Park City, Ir ..... and Sitka, among others. In Rochester, Mr. Webster directed the Society for Chamber Music for eleven years and taught at the Eastman School, from which he had earned three degrees. He was a member of the conducting faculty of the New England Conservatory and taught clarinet both there and at Boston University. He served as Music Director of the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra and guest conducted several Boston-area or­ chestras before becoming an adjunct professor of conducting at the University of Michigan. He is the founder of Chamber Music Ann Arbor, which presents Spring­ Fest every May. With his wife, flutist Leone Buyse, and pianist Katherine Collier, he plays in the Webster Trio, which is devoted to performing and expanding the reper­ toire for flute, clarinet, and piano; the group's first compact disc, "Tour de France," has recently been released by Crystal Records. As a composer and arranger, he has been published by G. Schirmer and International and recorded by CR.I In Septem­ ber 1997, Mr. Webster joined the faculty of The Shepherd School ofMusic, where he is Associate Professor of Clarinet and Ensembles. He is also Artistic Director of the Houston Youth Symphony and Ballet.
