What an inspiration.” Ted Farthing, Oregon Wine Board Executive Director, Oregon Wine Press, January 2009 Each July for the past twenty-four years, McMinnville, Oregon, has become Beaune in the USA. 700 Pinot geeks from all over the country and from every corner of the world descend on this inauspicious town to celebrate the fickle darling of wine cognoscenti and revel in their indulgence. The International Pinot Noir Celebration (IPNC) is held on the intimate and bucolic campus of Linfield College, but there is no homework or written tests, and no dreadful lectures at 8:00 in the morning, just an abundance of great Pinot Noir paired with the delicious bounty of Oregon prepared by the Pacific Northwest’s most talented chefs, and plenty of joie de vivre. This year’s IPNC, held on July 24-26, 2009, marked the twenty-third event, dating back to 1987, when a group of grape farmers and winemakers assembled to figure out a way to promote Oregon wine. -

Today, the family owned and operated winery in the heart of Oregon's Ribbon Ridge AVA produces small lots of acclaimed Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, and sparkling wine from its estate vineyards. winemaker’s notes This 2018 dry offering from our Coast Range Estate is textured with almost a chalky minerality with fresh, citrusy notes on the nose; the palate is strikingly concentrated and piquant, while the bright acidity is perfectly interwoven with the elegantly refined fruit, leading to a long, intense, very balanced finish. vintage & winemaking The 2018 vintage continues a streak of phenomenal vintages in the Willamette Valley. We harvested Riesling from our three estate vineyards over six different picking dates between September 28 to October 14, 2018. All Riesling was hand-picked, transported in small picking bins to the winery, chilled overnight, then hand-sorted before being gently pressed into its fermentation vessel. A mixture of oxidative and reductive pressings were employed. Fermentations lasted between 30-125 days in a temperature-controlled environment using a mixture of 70% neutral French oak casks, 20% French oak 12hL ovals, and 10% concrete eggs to produce over 76 individual fermentations. All ferments started with natural yeasts appellation: and spent 6 months in barrel on fine lees. Yamhill-Carlton AVA soil: estate vineyards Volcanic Jory Coast Range Estate (Yamhill-Carlton AVA) fermentation: This steep 53-acre site has 23 acres planted to vine and lies within the foothills of the Coast 76+ small lots were fermented in a mixture of Range Mountains marking the southwestern boundary of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. -

Located in the northern end of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, in the heart of Oregon’s Pinot Noir producing zone, the two new AVAs are Tualatin Hills and the Laurelwood District. The two AVAs, which are partially adjacent to one another, are notable for containing among the highest concentrations of Laurelwood soils in Oregon. Laurelwood soils consist of an exceptionally fine windblown soil called loess. It consists predominantly of silt-sized sediment that was formed by the accumulation of wind-blown dust and was produced by the grinding down of basaltic and other volcanic rocks by glaciers during the last ice age. They emphasize flavors of cherry, blackberry and spice. These wines offer a lighter, elegant style and texture with well-defined tannins, which is markedly different than the earthier, more robust, black fruit centered styles typical of Oregon’s sedimentary soils. -

2017 Willamette Valley Chardonnay

Today, the family owned and operated winery in the heart of Oregon's Ribbon Ridge AVA produces small lots of acclaimed Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling from its three estate vineyards. winemaker’s notes This Chardonnay is a blend of our Ribbon Ridge Estate and Coast Range Estate vineyards. The 2017 shows gorgeous aromatics of orange blossom, kumquat and fresh French baguette, with spicy notes of ginger and nutty toasted oak. Bright flavors of orchard fruits and citrus zest lead to toasted hazelnuts, sourdough bread, and vanilla cream. Firm acidity carries the fruit and mineral through on the lingering finish. vintage & winemaking 2017 proved to be another great vintage for Oregon. A later start to budbreak and bloom than in the previous year recalled more classic Oregon starts, while a long, dry growing season and warmer August allowed optimal fruit ripening. We harvested from our three estate vineyards over four different dates between September 13th on the Ribbon Ridge Estate; and concluded on October 16th when the last of our fruit from the Coast Range Estate made its way to the winery. All ferments started with natural yeasts and spent 11 appellation: months in barrel on fine lees. May is Oregon Wine Month Volume 11, Issue 23 May 6, 2018 Oregon Pinot Noir is Hot! Consumers and sommeliers are infatuated with Oregon Pinot Noir! Long considered a world-class wine region, but catching on even more with the wine cognoscenti, Oregon has seen unprecedented growth of late and now has more than 1,000 vineyards, more than 700 wineries, and grows 72 grape varieties. Full Glass Research released the newest economic impact figures in March 2018. The figures show all economic activity in Oregon related directly or indirectly to wine is $5.61 billion, compared to $3.35 billion just three years ago, an increase of 67% in statewide impact. The number of wine-related and induced jobs in Oregon totaled 29,738, up from 17,099 in 2013, representing a 74% increase. Wine sales grew 17% and Oregon is a major growth leader, percentage wise ahead of all other major growing states and countries around the world. Compared to the 2013 data, wine grape acreage increased 27%, and tons crushed by 42%. Oregon wineries bottled over 3 million 9L cases of wine and had revenues of over $529 million in 2016 (compared to $363 million in 2013) from the sale of packaged wine. Wine exported outside of Oregon increased from 127 million to 196 million, an increase of 53%. Consumers pay on average $39 a bottle for Oregon wine purchased through direct sales according to Ship Compliant data. Oregon wines sell well even though they are priced a little higher on average than wines from other US regions. -

His Dad, a Roseburg lawyer, was hired by a California winemaker to secure one of the first winery licenses in Oregon since Prohibition. Jim’s Dad allowed small tastes of Richard Sommer’s wine at the dinner table, lighting a path that led Jim from home winemaking to studies at UC Davis and eventually Beaune, France. His early “winemaking” grew more from mischief when at the age of 10, he liberated his Mom’s frozen Concord grape juice from the freezer following the description of fermentation in the family’s set of Encyclopedias. In 1983, with the encouragement from winemakers making their move from California, Jim cleared away an old pioneer plum orchard in the Salem Hills, hidden underneath scotch broom and blackberry vines. Unable to afford drip irrigation, he watered them by hand using 17 lengths of 75’ garden hose to get the grapelings through their first summer. America’s Community-Funded Winery Willamette Valley Vineyards became the first SEC authorized community-funded business in the U.S. through the first successful Regulation A self-underwritten public offering in 1989. The winery has grown with the support of wine enthusiasts through Preferred Stock Ownership (NASDAQ: WVVIP) funding new vineyards, wineries and experiences. If you drink no Noir, you Pinot Noir Volume 9, Issue 29 September 5, 2013 Ten Year Vertical of Freeman Akiko’s Cuvée Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir The history of Freeman Vineyard & Winery had its origins in a happenstance meeting between Ken and Akiko. After college, Ken was a crew member aboard a yacht sailing to the Caribbean, but Hurricane Gloria forced the crew ashore in Larchmont, New York, close to Ken’s hometown. Ken decided to join a party in town thrown by a good friend where he met Akiko. She had only recently arrived from Japan, and as Japanese tradition would dictate, she was dressed formally in a Chanel dress, a striking contrast to the other revelers clothed in jeans and tee shirts. Ken was smitten and after introductory formalities, the two eagerly shared their passion for fine wine, especially Pinot Noir. She had grown up in Japan around wine as her father was a wine enthusiast who often shared special bottles with his family. The date of their meeting, September 28, 1985, is engraved on the keystone at the Freeman winery’s entrance. The Freemans launched their winery in 2001 after acquiring a small Russian River Valley winemaking facility and property in Sebastopol on a redwood-covered hillside. Beforehand, they had explored more than 300 vineyards looking to establish an estate program of their own and enlist grower partners. They preferred cool- climate wines, and in particular, wines crafted in an eloquent style that were quite approachable upon release, but had enough structure to allow extended development over the long term.
