  • Augie March – Strange Bird
AUGIE MARCH – STRANGE BIRD A BRIEF INTRODUCTION Welcome to Augie March, the biography. We are a five year old band, born and still living in Melbourne, Australia where music is alive every night of the week. Three of us were born and raised in the country outside of Melbourne and migrated to the city for schooling in various arts and humanities. At the moment we number five, having recently added an experienced pianist/piano-accordionist to an already accomplished, organic and adventurous group of people. He also teaches music copyright law part time, so nobody can put anything over us when it comes to publishing contracts. His name is Kiernan Box. Adam Donovan is, among other things, our lead guitarist. His style is adventurous and unorthodox. He treats his instrument like a formula one car driver treats his vehicle, and yet, to watch Adam on stage you might think otherwise. His favourite saying is - "There are many ways to skin a cat." We all admire truth and beauty at Augie March, but one of us surpasses the others in his pursuit of these objectives. His name is David Williams. He is the drummer and percussionist. His heroes are predominantly in the jazz field, but he takes as much inspiration from the stories of Charles Dickens, and to a lesser degree Rudyard Kipling's forays into verse. He has a small son called Ziggy. Singer/songwriter Glenn Richards is perhaps the most difficult member of Augie March to describe. This is largely because he is enigmatic and whether artistic people cultivate their own enigma or whether it comes naturally, it makes for a difficult task to profile them.

Life in a Padded Cell: A Biography of Tony Cohen, Australian Sound Engineer by Dale Blair ©copyright ~ One ~ Satan has possessed your Soul! ‘Tony is very devout in “God’s Lesson”. I cannot speak highly enough of Tony’s manners and behaviour. They are beyond reproach’. It was the sort of report card every parent liked to see. It was 1964. The Beatles were big and Tony Cohen was a Grade One student at St. Francis de Sales primary school, East Ringwood. The following year he took his first communion. The Beatles were still big and there seemed little to fear for the parents of this conscientious and attentive eight-year-old boy. The sisters who taught him at that early age would doubtless have been shocked at the life he would come to lead – a life that could hardly be described as devout. Tony Cohen was born on 4 June 1957 in the maternity ward of the Jessie MacPherson hospital in Melbourne. Now a place specializing in the treatment of cancer patients it was a general hospital then. He was christened Anthony Lawrence Cohen. His parents Philip and Margaret Cohen had been living in James Street, Windsor, but had moved to the outer eastern suburb of East Ringwood prior to the birth of their son. Philip Cohen was the son of Jewish immigrants who had left Manchester, England, and settled in Prahran, one of Melbourne’s inner eastern suburbs. Philip’s father had served in the First World War, survived and then migrated to Australia with his wife and infant son (Tony’s Uncle David).

FEATURE If Josh Pyke’s career as a recording artist writes a song they have the chord progression, should ever founder, he has a contingency the melody, the lyrics, and that’s the core of the plan – a career as a record producer. Based on song. For me, production then involves things the evidence thus far it would seem unlikely that like sonic embellishments, ideas and motifs and he’ll need a Plan B any time soon. His debut signature melody lines. It can involve writing, album, last year’s Memories & Dust entered the augmenting the song and the structure, and the national charts at No. 4, and went on to win the arrangement. It’s very hands on, and for me as a 2007 ARIA award for ‘Best Adult Contemporary songwriter it’s very much a natural step. It’s also Album’. The obvious commitment of his record getting the best performance out of musicians, label, Ivy League, not to mention a sustained having little techniques to ensure the musician touring schedule of the UK, all bode well for a is fulfilling his or her potential with each take. long career. • News Issue 50
Welcome to AT’s commemorative Indispensable section of Issue 50. I know Andy has done a masterful job steering his introductory Ed Space around the craggy rocks of misty-eyed nostalgia… I’m afraid I can’t be so circumspect. It’s Issue 50, I’ve been doing AT since Issue 3 and I demand some misty-eyed nostalgia! Here goes: In 1998, when I arrived back in Australia after five years in the UK, my first stop-off was to see Greg Simmons and Philip Spencer in Sydney. I heard they’d just started a new magazine and also heard they were looking for another pair of hands in editorial. I guess they couldn’t believe that someone with pro audio publishing experience was just happening to head home, and I could hardly believe there was a mag in Australia that would allow me continue the work I was doing at Audio Media and Sound on Sound magazines. A match made in heaven… But it was tough times. I’m sure anyone who’s started a small business would be familiar with the uncertainty that comes with that – the lack of money and hardware, stupidly long hours, phones getting cut off… but also the profound satisfaction of doing something cool, doing it well and doing it your own way. I’m proud of AT. The 49 issues of the magazine that line up in front of me on my desk, account for the prime years of my working life, as well as a good chunk of what should have been my recreational/family time.
