Important Event Information for sign up

The event is around 33 miles / 50km. At times you will be 1 mile or more from the shore. Please see the record times for:

Solo Kayak: 4hours 48minutes Surf Ski single: 4hours 35minutes Surf Ski double: 4hours 17minutes solo: 5hours 18minutes

You need to be able to in sea conditions along a stretch of coastline with some areas where it is not easy to land but there will always be straightforward land points a maximum of two nautical miles apart. Up to 2-3 Knots of tide (but not involving tide race or overfills). Wind strengths up to Beaufort force 4. Launching and landing through surf (up to 1 metre, trough to crest height).

Automatic Qualifying Criteria to Participate

• Anyone with British (BC) Leader or Advanced sea kayak Leader (formerly 4 or 5 star), Coastal Sea Kayak award automatically qualifies. • At least one person must have the BC Sea Kayak Leader or Advanced sea kayak Leader (4 or 5 star) or Coastal Sea kayak certificate in a double kayak.

Copies of certificates will have to be sent to event organisers.

OR

• Surf Ski Paddlers who have completed the “Icon Classic” race in the last 3 years (or a similar race in Europe or overseas) and have finished within the cut off times in their class. • Have achieved similar results in the last 3 years in GB series (or similar in Europe or overseas). Please submit evidence of your qualifying results in the Icon classic GB series or other similar events when you enter.

Entries will be checked, and you may be asked to provide additional evidence of your competency to take part.

If you do not meet the above criteria it may still be possible for you to enter via this option;

If you do not have (BC) Sea Kayak Leader or Advanced sea kayak Leader (formerly 4 or 5 star), Coastal Sea Kayak award or, meet the surf ski criteria (above) you must:

Sit inside style sea :

• Take part in a specialist training/try-out session provided by the Jersey Canoe Club (JCC) for sit inside style sea kayaks and be signed off as competent. Saturday mornings Jun/Jul to be confirmed via John Richardson Jersey Canoe Club. Ensure you are race fit by completing the ½ Island Paddle (Date to be confirmed – Contact John Richardson 07797831209). Surf Ski Kayak paddlers:

• Ocean Ski paddlers must have attended specialist training/courses or an assessment of your competence prior to the race provided by the Jersey Kayak Adventures and be signed off as competent. Saturday mornings June/July dates to be confirmed – see below). Surf-ski paddlers must ensure they are race fit by completing the ½ Island Paddle (Date to be confirmed (Contact Derek Hairon 07797853033)

In exceptional circumstances we will consider entrants who do not meet the above requirements providing you;

• Submit evidence of at least three 15nm journeys made in the last 12 months in the type of craft you plan to race in. At least two trips must be in at least force 3-4 winds. • Evidence of your ability to perform a self-rescue in your chosen craft in force 3-4 winds and tides of up to 2-3 knots • Evidence you can remain with your craft and paddle in the event of capsize. • Event organisers will need to have a reference from a British Canoe or Sea Kayak (old level 3) qualified coach stating that the competitors is competent to take on the JRIC. • We will ask to see your log book or other suitable evidence of this. Submission of this evidence and acceptance it at the race organisers discretion.

Please note that you cannot participate until your request is approved.

Entries will be checked, and you may be asked to provide additional evidence of your competency to take part. Acceptance of your entry is at the judge’s discretion and is final. Do not book travel/accommodation until your entry has been accepted.

All participants must:

• Carry a VHF marine radio or mobile phone (in a waterproof pouch with lanyard attached to your PFD) which is accessible and useable at all times on the water in addition to any tracking devices provided by the race organisers). • Carry a flare (day-smoke or laser flare or laser strobe) to assist any rescuer pinpoint your position. • Provide “on-deck/on-person” food and water for energy and full hydration throughout the event. • Have their race number visible to the on-water safety team and the event organisers at all times when on the water. • All competitors must wear a personal flotation device (PFD) approved by the race committee (the PFD must be on the ICF list) from before the start until after the finish of every event. Please note competitors who finish the race without their PFD on will be disqualified.

Cut Off Times

For safety reasons there will be cut-off times at specific points around Jersey. The cut off times will be communicated in race the race briefing and must be adhered to.
