Toivo Burlin: The creation (and re-creation) of virtual spatiality: Surround sound mixing in King Crimson’s back catalog box sets Abstract: The article analyzes surround mixing of King Crimson’s analog recordings. “Lizard,” “Larks’ Tongues in Aspic (Part 1),” “The Night Watch,” “Trio,” and “One Time” are analyzed using the theoretical perspec- tives of the music recording as representation and spatial design. There is a difference between live and studio recordings in surround: live recordings tend to be mixed according to the direct/ambient principle, while studio re- cordings are mixed according to the principle of direct-sound all around. Live recordings in surround can also often be understood as examples of documentarism, and studio recordings as examples of hyper realism. The spatial design of the surround mix tends to emphasize aspects of spatiality in the broad sense: where the recording can, for example, be interpreted as a landscape in sound. Introduction This essay discusses some tendencies in the emerging conventions in con- temporary surround mixing of popular music.

  • 2005 on Allan Holdsworth
On Allan Holdsworth: January 2005 with Christophe Coureau 1) Do you remember the circumstances in which you first became aware of Allan as a musician ? I was surprised to read a Melody Maker interview from November 1972 in which you already cited Allan as one of the guitarists that impressed you most, alongside John McLaughlin and Robert Fripp. Where did you first see him play, and with whom ? I can't quite remember. Maybe a Soft Machine album, and certainly he was very strong on "Gazeuse" by Gong. No-one else had that liquid style and the octave leaps and the whammy bar and the rest of it... 2) As far as I know, your first collaboration with Allan was a demo for Virgin of "The Abingdon Chasp" in, I think, the summer of 1976, alongside Dave Stewart, Francis Moze and Ray Warleigh. Is this true? Do you remember playing/recording more tracks? Just Allan's compositions? Was this the first time you ever played together? Did that session leave you a strong impression, an inkling that Allan and yourself could form a strong musical partnership ? I don't remember anything about that demo, but Allan had certainly aked me to play in a pub in Putney (South-West London ) some time around then with Ray Warleigh. of course, by now I knew enough about his talent to be hugely impressed, and to think that if ever the opportunity arose, if ever I could find a vehicle big enough to contain him, I'd give him a call... 3) Although you had found Jeff Berlin as early as 1975, it seems you didn't think of asking Allan to join your band and that he played on "Feels Good To Me" as a last minute decision.

Il 10 ottobre è una data da circoletto rosso, viene, infatti, pubblicato uno dei dischi più affascinanti e innovativi della storia del rock: In The Court Of Crimson King (sottotitolato An Observation By King Crimson). • Bass Players : Appeared in the June 2003 Issue of Bass Player Magazine
On bass players : appeared in the June 2003 issue of Bass Player magazine. Bill Lanphier (for Bass Player Magazine) How do you perceive the role of the bass player in a band? In jazz, the bass player seems now to be the fundamental time and harmony controller, centre stage as it were, from whom utter dependability is required. In Earthworks, as in many other groups, he is indeed physically centre stage. As the drummer moves more to the role of the Chief of Dynamics, and Chief Commentator, so most band members look to the bass player to define the harmony, and define the time. At a recent excellent McCoy Tyner trio gig, with an active drummer on his left, the bass player (centre stage) never wavered for a moment, caught as he was between a hurricane and a tornado. He never spoke with a loud voice, but was always clearly and evenly audible, the lynch-pin between piano and drums. In rock, you play the root note very loudly. How important is the bass in relation to other instruments in a band? It’s as important as the player wants to make it. Is there a single most important element you look for in a bass player? An ability to do the simple well, the complex effortlessly, and both imaginatively. Much like any other musician. Perhaps an additional an ability not to get lost, particularly in heavily "substituted" jazz harmony, would be helpful. If he gets lost, there is every chance that I will--its contagious! Do you try to first lock in with the bass player? Who I'm locking in with depends on who's doing what at any given time.

  • U-Z Press & Eddie Biography 2011
FIRST FULL ALBUM RELEASE IN 25 YEARS FROM A PROGRESSIVE ROCK PIONEER EDDIE JOBSON - biography The Editor-in-Chief of Emmy magazine wrote: “The word ‘genius’ is bandied about a bit too freely these days, but in Jobson’s case, the term not only applies, it’s been used to describe him since his northern England childhood, when he was such a violin and piano prodigy that he wrote his first string quartet at 13 [and] performed with his first professional symphony at 14...” His performances and compositions have received press accolades, having been described as “brilliant” [All Music Guide], “intriguingly original” [Los Angeles Times], even “magnificent” [London Times], “staggering” [All About Jazz], and “dazzling” [The Boston Globe]. Jobson started playing acoustic guitar and classical piano at age 7 and violin at age 8, turning professional at only 15. By age 17, he had already acquired a record deal with Warner Bros. and an international reputation as one of the early pioneers of the electric violin with his first recording band Curved Air (the band that also launched the career of Police drummer Stewart Copeland). In the same year he was invited by Roxy Music front-man Bryan Ferry to be the keyboardist and orchestrator on Ferry’s first solo album—a project that would garner the teen star the first of his nine gold albums. At age 18, Jobson became a full-blown member of Roxy Music, replacing synthesist Brian Eno and helping the band create their first No.1 album—a point that would mark the beginning of ‘Roxymania’ in Britain and the start of their most critically acclaimed and influential period.
