Past & present The Faculty of Law, founded in 1776, celebrates a long and distinguished history. It is one of the oldest institutions of the University of Zagreb. The Faculty traditions are related to the beginning of higher . When in 1773 Pope Clement XIV had dissolved the Jesuit order, Queen undertook comprehensive reforms in the system of education and by her decree of 1776, the Royal Academy of Sciences was established as the highest educational institution. The Academy consisted of three faculties: the Faculty of Philosophy, the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Law (Facultas iuridica). After the establishment of the Republic of Croatia, the Faculty of Law in Zagreb, the oldest of the four faculties of law in the country, has strengthened international scientific co-operation. Its members participate in the work of foreign scientific institutions and cultivate co-operation with scientists in other countries. In its third century of existence, the Faculty of Law in Zagreb has proved to be the source of Croatian nation-building spirit and free thought, the guardian of the Croatian culture and the representative of the Croatian legal school as one of the centres of the Central-European legal tradition, and as

such it is distinguished in the country and abroad. Its members, being aware of the & PRESENT PAST role which the Faculty had in the past, in the present social environment act in the spirit of the rich tradition of the school of law they belong to. They greatly contribute to the creation of the Croatian legal system, establishment of the rule of law and education of new generations of lawyers on the best European legal traditions.

3 Curriculum

CURRICULUM

The Faculty of Law today offers seven different types of study programme - three in law, three in social work and two in public administration. In the field of law these programmes are: an integrated BA-MA general law programme (300 ECTS), advanced master’s programmes (120 ECTS), and a doctoral programme (180 ECTS). Each of the levels offers an opportunity for specialisation in a particular legal field such as constitutional and administrative law, civil law, criminal law, commercial law, labour law and social security law, tax law, international law and European law. Scientific and professional work at the Faculty is organised in six institutes and two study centres. Exchange students may choose from a wide array of courses that together reflect the remarkable range of the faculty’s expertise and interests. Majority of these courses have fewer than 15 students enrolled, where small groups of students work closely with faculty. New courses are constantly being added based on faculty and student interest. Students also may engage in seminars, legal clinic and moot courts. All courses are awarded with credits using the ECTS system. Most of the courses have 30 hours of lectures and in accor- dance with our Curriculum students obtain 4 ECTS credits for each course. At the Law programme we currently offer 36 courses in English language, which form the foundation for many other activities that we organise. Social work programme offers six courses in English language and Public administration programme offers two for the time being. The accurate list of courses can be found on the Faculty’s web site. 4 Courses in English language

Legal clinic

Led by prof. Uzelac, the legal clinic is one of the most valued aspects of the Faculty of Law education under which students provide free legal assistance to citizens in need of it. By combining theoretical knowledge and practical skills, we want to help those who are not otherwise able to exercise their rights. Mission of the Legal Clinic is commitment to public service by working on individual problems and providing our students with the best educational experience. Students and other clinic staff try to keep the clinic to the highest standards of legal profession, developing both their legal skills and sensitivity to current problems in the community. Moot Court Competitions

The Faculty of Law offers law students a possibility to get involved in different aspects of the law by participating in various moot court competitions. Participation in moot courts is awarded with 10 ECTS credits.  European Law Moot Court Competition is an annual moot court competition and it is considered the most prestigious moot court competition within the field of EU Law and one of the most prestigious moot court competitions in the world. On 1 April 2011, before the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxemburg, Zagreb student team won the European Law Moot Court competition (following three earlier vice-champion positions in 2006, 2008 and 2010). We are particularly proud of this success as for the first time in history, the same team managed to win in two separate categories of the competition - Best Team and Best Advocate General.

 Central and East European Law Moot Court. On 1 May 2011, another Zagreb

MOOT COURTS MOOT student team won the Central and East European Moot competition. In addition to the prize for the best team, two of the pleaders have won individual prizes - the Best Speaker Award and the Speaker Award.  Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, also known as the Jessup, is the largest and most prestigious moot competition in the world, attracting participants from over 500 law schools in more than 100 countries in recent years. The competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before

the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The competition is named after Philip Jessup, who once served on the ICJ. It is organised by the International Law Students Association.

 Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot fosters study in the areas of international commercial and arbitration laws and encourages the resolution of business disputes by arbitration. The problem for the moot is always based on an international sales transaction subjected to the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, 1980 (also referred to as the United Nations or the Sales Convention, or CISG) and also involves procedural issues of arbitration.

 Regional Moot Court in Human Rights. Teams argue a hypothetical case on issues of human rights law as if it will be adjudicated by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, on the basis of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and other applicable (such as regional) human rights instruments. In 2010 Regional Moot Court Competition in Human Rights – the Zagreb team won 1st prizes for both written pleadings, and 3rd prize in the overall ranking.

24 Zagreb is the largest, most influential, and culturally significant city in Croatia. Resting on the southern slopes of the mountain, along the river, it has a population of over one million. Central European in appearance and spirit, Zagreb bears the hallmark of centuries spent under the Habsburg rule with an impressive beauty of its own. The cobblestone streets and the various architectural wonders blend beautifully with city's fantastic outdoor spaces such as Park, Mirogoj or Lake. Sljeme, the highest peak of Medvednica range, is easily accessible from the city and sports activities here include hiking, skiing and many more, depending on the season. , the medieval castle, looms above the city for an appealing medley of the contemporary and ancient. With its plethora of museums, restaurants and and a lively nightlife, Zagreb is becoming an ideal destination for visitors who come to see the historic town and take advantage of the relative cheapness of a European city. Its location and god traffic relations with other neighbouring capital cities make it a perfect starting point for exploring the beautiful Adriatic coastline and many other nearby attractions.
