It is one of the oldest institutions of the University of Zagreb. The Faculty traditions are related to the beginning of higher education in Croatia. When in 1773 Pope Clement XIV had dissolved the Jesuit order, Queen Maria Theresa undertook comprehensive reforms in the system of education and by her decree of 1776, the Royal Academy of Sciences was established as the highest educational institution. The Academy consisted of three faculties: the Faculty of Philosophy, the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Law (Facultas iuridica). After the establishment of the Republic of Croatia, the Faculty of Law in Zagreb, the oldest of the four faculties of law in the country, has strengthened international scientific co-operation. Its members participate in the work of foreign scientific institutions and cultivate co-operation with scientists in other countries. In its third century of existence, the Faculty of Law in Zagreb has proved to be the source of Croatian nation-building spirit and free thought, the guardian of the Croatian culture and the representative of the Croatian legal school as one of the centres of the Central-European legal tradition, and as such it is distinguished in the country and abroad. Its members, being aware of the PAST & PRESENT role which the Faculty had in the past, in the present social environment act in the spirit of the rich tradition of the school of law they belong to. They greatly contribute to the creation of the Croatian legal system, establishment of the rule of law and education of new generations of lawyers on the best European legal traditions. 3 Curriculum CURRICULUM The Faculty of Law today offers seven different types of study programme - three in law, three in social work and two in public administration. In the field of law these programmes are: an integrated BA-MA general law programme (300 ECTS), advanced master’s programmes (120 ECTS), and a doctoral programme (180 ECTS). Each of the levels offers an opportunity for specialisation in a particular legal field such as constitutional and administrative law, civil law, criminal law, commercial law, labour law and social security law, tax law, international law and European law. Scientific and professional work at the Faculty is organised in six institutes and two study centres. Exchange students may choose from a wide array of courses that together reflect the remarkable range of the faculty’s expertise and interests. Majority of these courses have fewer than 15 students enrolled, where small groups of students work closely with faculty. New courses are constantly being added based on faculty and student interest. Students also may engage in seminars, legal clinic and moot courts. All courses are awarded with credits using the ECTS system. Most of the courses have 30 hours of lectures and in accor- dance with our Curriculum students obtain 4 ECTS credits for each course. At the Law programme we currently offer 36 courses in English language, which form the foundation for many other activities that we organise. Social work programme offers six courses in English language and Public administration programme offers two for the time being. The accurate list of courses can be found on the Faculty’s web site. 4 Courses in English language Course ECTS credits Constitutional Law 8 Croatian Legal History in the European Context 8 Economic Policy 8 European Public Law 8 Family Law 8 Roman Private Law 8 Anti-discrimination Employment and Social Security Law 4 Bioethics and Human Rights (UNESCO chair) 4 Comparative Legal Lingustics 4 Comparative Civil Procedure 4 Consumer Protection 4 Criminal Law of the European Union 4 Development of European Integration and Institutions 4 Development of International Law 4 Economic Criminal Law 4 EU and WTO in a Comparative Perspective (Jean Monnet module) 4 EU Internal Market Law (Jean Monnet module) 4 EU Migration Law and Policy 4 CURRICULUM EU Substantive Criminal Law and Protection of Victims 4 European Criminal Law 4 European Private International Law 4 Foundations of European Private Law 4 Fundamental Rights in the European Union 4 History of Modern Time Political Theories 4 Human Rights and Criminal Justice 4 Insolvency Law 4 International Criminal Law 4 Introduction to Political Science 4 Ius commune – Foundations of European Private Legal Systems 4 Legal Sociology 4 Organisation of the Judiciary 4 Outline of EU Employment and Social Security Law 4 Reforming Public Administration in the European Context 4 Settlement of Disputes through Arbitration and Mediation 4 Sociology of the Croatian Society 4 States of Emergency in Comparative Constitutional Law 4 Intensive course International Commercial Law and Dispute Resolution (Zagreb/Zadar) 8 Advanced Issues of European Law (Dubrovnik) 4 Crime Prevention through Criminal Law and Security Studies (Dubrovnik) 4 Economy and Democracy (Dubrovnik) 4 Fordham Law Summer Institute 4 Human Rights and Globalization (Zadar) 4 International Criminal Law (Dubrovnik) 4 Public and Private Justice (Dubrovnik) 4 Legal Harmonization with EU Law: The Case of Croatia, Slovenia and Austria 4 Victimology, Victim Assistance and Criminal Justice (Dubrovnik) 4 5 Academic calendar CURRICULUM Academic calendar 2012/13 1 – 30 September 2012 Enrollment for the academic year 2012/13 27 and 28 September 2012 Orientation days 1 October 2012 Beginning of the academic year 1 October– 10 November 2012, 19 November 2012 Lectures in the winter semester – 28 January 2013 12 – 17 November 2012 Mid term examinations 28 January – 23 February 2013 Winter semester examinations 25 February - 13 April, 22 April – 1 June 2013 Lectures in the summer semester 15 – 20 April 2013 Mid term examinations 3 June – 13 July 2013 Summer semester examinations 1 – 30 September 2013 Summer semester examinations & enrollment for the academic year 2013/14 30 September 2013 End of academic year 6 Law libary The Library of the Faculty of Law is a centre for legal research and studies for faculty, students, lawyers, judges, and scholars.
