Jose-Luis Postigo,a* Assaf Shwartz,b Diederik Strubbec,d and Antonio-Román Muñoza,e Abstract BACKGROUND: Monk parakeets, Myiopsitta monachus Boddaert, are native to South America but have established populations in North America, Europe, Africa and Asia. They are claimed to act as agricultural pests in their native range, and their communal stick nests may damage human infrastructure. Although several monk parakeet populations are present in the Mediterranean Basin and temperate Europe, little empirical data are available on their population size and growth, distribution and potential impact. We investigated the temporal and spatial dynamics of monk parakeets in Israel to assess their invasion success and potential impact on agriculture. RESULTS: Monk parakeet populations are growing exponentially at a higher rate than that reported elsewhere. The current Israeli population of monk parakeets comprises approximately 1500 individuals. The distribution of the species has increased and shifted from predominantly urban areas to agricultural landscapes. CONCLUSIONS: In Israel, monk parakeet populations are growing fast and have dispersed rapidly from cities to agricultural areas. At present, reports of agricultural damage are scarce. A complete assessment of possible management strategies is urgently needed before the population becomes too large and widespread to allow for cost-effective mitigation campaigns to be implemented. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry Supporting information may be found in the online version of this article. -

DOOLING, KAZUO OKANOYA, and JANE DOWNING University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland and STEWART HULSE Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland Operant conditioning and a psychophysical tracking procedure were used to measure auditory thresholds for pure tones in quiet and in noise for a European starling. The audibility curve for the starling is similar to the auditory sensitivity reported earlier for this species using a heart rate conditioning procedure. Masked auditory thresholds for the starling were measured at a number of test frequencies throughout the bird's hearing range. Critical ratios (signal-to-noise ratio at masked threshold) were calculated from these pure tone thresholds. Critical ratios in crease throughout the starling's hearing range at a rate of about 3 dB per octave. This pattern is similar to that observed for most other vertebrates. These results suggest that the starling shares a common mechanism of spectral analysis with many other vertebrates, including the human. Parakeet (Budgerigar)
PARAKEET (BUDGERIGAR) The budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) also known as common pet parakeet or shell parakeet and informally nicknamed the budgie, is a small, long-tailed, seed-eating parrot. Budgerigars are the only species in the Australian genus Melopsittacus, and are found wild throughout the drier parts of Australia where the species has survived harsh inland conditions for the last five million years. Budgerigars are naturally green and yellow with black, scalloped markings on the nape, back, and wings, but have been bred in captivity with colouring in blues, whites, yellows, greys, and even with small crests. Budgerigars are popular pets around the world due to their small size, low cost, and ability to mimic human speech. The species was first recorded in 1805, and today is the third most popular pet in the world, after the domesticated dog and cat. They are very active, playful birds, and they are incredibly intelligent. Some (but not all) budgies learn to talk, there are even budgies have a 100+ word vocabulary! Budgies can easily become finger tame while they are young with some diligent training, even if they were not hand fed as babies. Many owners of fully tamed budgies will swear that their budgie thinks it's a human! Even if a budgie is not tamed, they still make enjoyable pets. Their antics and singing will brighten up any room in your home. And budgies who are not finger tame still can become friendly towards you, and even still learn to talk. Name Many people know them as "parakeets," but their real name is "budgerigar". -

Pest Risk Assessment: Quaker Parrot Myiopsitta monachus 2/18 1. Summary The Quaker parrot, Myiopsitta monachus, is a medium-sized bird, mostly green and grey with a blue- grey forehead. It is unique among psittaciformes in that it builds a stick nest rather than breeding in a cavity. These stick nests are often communal, with multiple pairs breeding in the same large stick structure. -

Southern Belize: Birding & Nature | Species List February 20 ‒ 28, 2019 | Written by Bob Meinke Guide Bob Meinke, with expert local lodge naturalists Marvin and Steven, and 9 participants: Kelly, Isaac, Lenore, Harold, Cindy, Richelle, Beth, Nancy, and Joe SUMMARY We enjoyed a scenic and productive trip, starting with the vast freshwater wetlands at Crooked Tree Lagoon, transitioning on to the montane woodlands of the Mountain Pine Ridge, and ending our tour in the broadleaf forests and mangroves of Toledo District at the southern tip of Belize. Working our way down the length of the country increased our exposure to a wide range of habitats, and with it came a nice assortment of resident and migrant bird species as well as other wildlife. Highlights among the resident species included King Vulture, Bare-crowned Antbird, Black-and-white Owl, Yucatan Jay, White-winged Becard, Ruddy Woodcreeper, Eye-ringed Flatbill, Violet Sabrewing, three species of Trogon, and five species of Kingfisher (with multiple, close-in views of American Pygmy a surprising bonus). And while not unexpected, Keel-billed Toucan, Collared Aracari, Bare-throated Tiger Heron, Montezuma Oropendola, Golden -headed Tanager, Barred Antshrike, and Squirrel Cuckoo were all exquisite reminders of the rich colors and morphological diversity that characterize the avifauna of the Neotropics. North American migrants were also plentiful during our visit, and among the many warblers encountered, Blue-winged, Worm-eating, and Prothonotary stood out among the 21 overwintering species we recorded, most of which were just entering full breeding plumage as they readied for their journey north to the U.S. -

Amazon Cruise - Primates & Parrots Trip Report and Systematic List 28 April – 10 May 2019 Text by Chris Collins with assistance from Regina Ribeiro. Photos by Chris Collins except where indicated. Introduction This was the second of our “world first” Amazon Primates and Parrots wildlife cruises and like the inaugural trip in 2018, the expedition was a great success with many poorly known species being seen. We spent most of the time exploring the remote rainforests south of the Amazon between Manaus and Santarem (with a couple of days north of this mighty river towards the end of the tour) giving us access to the home ranges of many highly localised primates. For many of the group, the marmosets were amongst the most desired species and we had considerably success finding five species including Golden-white Tassel-ear, Maués, Sateré and Santarem. We were equally successful with the titi monkeys and our sightings included Lake Baptista, Red-bellied, Chestnut-bellied and Ashy. With other primates including Martin’s Bare-faced Tamarin, Red-nosed Saki, Spix’s Howler, Spix’s Black-headed Uacari, the total for the main tour was 26 species, with a further five being seen on the extension to Uacari Lodge. The mammals found also included other families than just primates and we had good views of Brown-throated and Linnaeus’s Two-toed Sloths, as well as Brazilian Porcupine and more or less daily sightings of both Tucuxi and Amazon River Dolphin. Indeed, for some of the group our visit to a site near Manaus where it was possible to ‘swim’ with wild dolphins was a major highlight of the tour.
