Press Release October 31, 2016 No. M 220/16 FIA World Endurance Championship WEC, LMP1, Round 8, Shanghai (China), Preview Match point for Porsche in the fight for the manufacturers’ championship Stuttgart. On November 6 the FIA World Endurance Championship is having its eighth and, at the same time, penultimate round of the 2016 season. One year ago in Shang- hai Porsche celebrated an early win in the manufacturers’ world championship. Noth- ing less than the defence of this title is the target for this year’s six-hour race at the Chinese Formula One circuit. So far this season the Porsche Team has achieved five race wins with its two 919 Hybrids and leads the manufacturers’ world championship with 263 points ahead of Audi (204) and Toyota (174). With the current advantage being 59 points, the team could start partying if the gap was at least 44 points after six hours of racing. We very much regret the loss of Audi as a great competitor from the 2017 WEC season on. Porsche will compete in the entire 2017 WEC season as planned. So far Porsche has derived a huge benefit in terms of knowledge and innovations for production cars from the LMP1 programme – this applies in particular to the 24-hour race at Le Mans. To be too relaxed in this year`s fight for the championship would be wrong, warned Fritz Enzinger. The Vice President LMP1 points to last year’s experience: “At the final race in Bahrain in 2015, it was the drivers’ title that seemed fairly easy to get.

  • World Championship: Good Chances for Porsche GT Team the WEC Goes Down to the Wire at the Six-Hour Race on 18 November
newsroom Motorsports Nov 13, 2017 World championship: Good chances for Porsche GT Team The WEC goes down to the wire at the six-hour race on 18 November. After a strong maiden season with the 911 RSR, the Porsche GT Team could be crowned world champions in two categories – in the team classification and in the drivers’ classification with Richard Lietz and Frédéric Makowiecki. On the Formula 1 circuit in the Bahrain desert, two 911 RSR will tackle the fiercely competitive GTE-Pro class. The situation heading to the final race Richard Lietz and Frédéric Makowiecki stand the best chances of winning the title. In the lead-up to the final race, they sit just two points shy of the leading Ferrari pilots Alessandro Pier Guidi and James Calado in the drivers’ classification, and 5.5 points ahead of Harry Tincknell/Andy Priaulx (Ford). All three driver pairings could take the world championship crown in Bahrain. This underlines just how competitive the GTE-Pro class is. Richard Lietz and Frédéric Makowiecki will become world champions if... ...they win the race. ...they finish on second or third ahead of Guidi/Calado and Tincknell/Priaulx, provided that Pier Guidi/Calado don’t earn the extra point for pole position. ...they earn the extra point for pole position and finish the race ahead of Pier Guidi/Calado and Tincknell/Priaulx – regardless of the position. The Porsche GT Team, which fields the 911 RSR with the starting number 91, ranks second in the team classification, 13 points behind AF Corse (Ferrari No. 51) and two points ahead of the Ford Chip Ganassi Team (Ford No.

  • 6 Hours of Bahrain: Signatech Alpine Matmut Sign Off in Style!
PRESS RELEASE 19/11/2017 6 HOURS OF BAHRAIN: SIGNATECH ALPINE MATMUT SIGN OFF IN STYLE! After starting from pole position in Bahrain for the third year running, the no.36 Signatech Alpine Matmut crew ended the six-hour race in fourth place. Having suffered substantial degradation of their tyres at the start of the race, Lapierre, Negrão and Menezes then gambled on their tyre choice. Alpine finishes third in the FIA WEC's Endurance Trophy for LMP2 Teams. Still in contention for the world title, Signatech Alpine Matmut arrived in Bahrain solely focused on winning the race. Fourth in the free practice sessions held on Thursday, the team upped their pace the next day in qualifying. André Negrão and Gustavo Menezes produced a superb performance to set an average time of 1:47.227 and secure pole position in the LMP2 category, almost 4/10ths clear of the two crews ahead of them in the overall standings. In spite of the point scored for pole position, the situation remained the same for the no.36 Alpine A470 drivers, who simply had to win in order to have a chance of retaining their title! Nicolas Lapierre led at the start, ahead of Oliver Jarvis (no.38) and Bruno Senna (no.31), whose battle allowed Vitaly Petrov (no.25) to get past at the restart following the first SC period. Held up by the traffic and with premature wear of his hard tyres, Nico decided not to put up a fight when he came under pressure from the Russian. The team decided to alter its strategy as a result, fitting two medium tyres on the left during its first pit stop.

  • FRUSTRATING FINALE for TOYOTA GAZOO RACING Saturday 19 November 2016
FRUSTRATING FINALE FOR TOYOTA GAZOO RACING Saturday 19 November 2016 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing experienced a disappointing end to the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season in the 6 Hours of Bahrain. The #5 TS050 HYBRID of Anthony Davidson, Sébastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima was the lead TOYOTA in fourth, just the third time this year that the team has missed out on the podium. Stéphane Sarrazin, Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi in the #6 car began the race with an outside chance of the drivers’ World Championship, but fifth place was not enough to overhaul the Porsche #2 crew of Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb. The #6 crew finished the season a creditable third in the drivers’ standings, 15 points behind the champions, with their #5 counterparts 8th following a series of misfortunes this year. TOYOTA’s finally tally from the nine-race season stands at one win, seven podium finishes and 229 points with the TS050 HYBRID, earning third position in the manufacturers’ World Championship. Today’s race represented Audi’s final appearance in the championship. The team marked the occasion by displaying messages on both TS050 HYBRIDs and presenting a commemorative banner to the Head of Audi Motorsport, Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. When the race got under way, Kamui in the #6 fought hard with #7 Audi but could not stay ahead, instead he put pressure on from fifth with Sébastien just behind in the sister car. The Porsche #2 suffered a puncture after almost one hour, elevating the #5 to fourth place, with the #6 now in fifth as the sun set and darkness took hold at the Bahrain International Circuit.
