The novel was published in 2004 by a division of Simon & Schuster, Inc. first publishing is in Great Britain by Hodder & Stoughton and first publishing in America is by Atria. The novel consists of 55 chapters and has 432 pages. My Sister's Keeper was adapted in a movie with the same title My Sister's Keeper, that was released in June 2009, and the stars are Cameron Diaz, Alec Baldwin, Abigail Breslin. Jodi Lynn Picoult was born on May 19th1966, in Nesconset on Long Island in New York. Picoult's family moved to New Hampshire when she was 13. She lives in Hanover, New Hampshire with her husband, Tim Van Leer, and their three children, Sammy, Kyle and Jake. Picoult studied writing at Princeton University, where she earned her bachelor's degree. After graduation from Princenton University, she took on a series of miscellaneous jobs, from editing at a textbook publishing company to teaching English. She also earned a master's degree in education from Harvard University. Picoult wrote some novels, My Sister’s Keeper (2004), Vanishing Acts (2005), The Tenth Circle (2006), Nineteen Minutes (2007), Change of Heart (2008), Handle with Care (2009),House Rules (2010), Sing you Home (2011), Lone Wolf (2012), The Story Teller (2013) and Leaving Time (2014). CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION Background of the Study Jodi Picoult is an American novelist who is famous for her writings which mainly discuss issues which involve human emotion and complex problems in their relations. Her first novel, Songs of Humpback Whale, was published in 1992. Other famous works are My Sister’s Keeper (2004), Handle With Care (2009), Second Glance (2003), Perfect Match (2002), Keeping Faith (1999) and House Rules (2010). Jodi Picoult has received praises from senior writers like Stephen King, who states that “Picoult writes with unassuming brilliance” (“Jodi Picoult”) and they are often listed as best sellers in famous newspaper reviews such as the USA Today and the New York Times review. The book discussed in this thesis is one of Picoult’s bestselling novels, House Rules. House Rules is a novel which tells about a boy named Jacob Hunt who suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome, which is a highly functional form of autism that limits social interaction. In order to make Jacob able to live normally with other people and be accepted, his mother, Emma Hunt, hires Jessica “Jess” Ogivly to improve Jacob’s social skills. Unfortunately, things are getting complicated for Jacob and his mother when Jacob is accused of murdering Jess. With his limitation in reading social cues, Jacob tries to understand the situation 1 Maranatha Christian University and fights his way to get approval and understanding from his neighbors who generally have negative image on him. Picoult manages to bring the reader to understand the situation the main characters face by writing this novel in the perspective of all the main characters. -

Plenary Session Speaker Biographies Marisa Demeo ’88 In 2009, President Obama nominated Marisa Demeo to be an Associate Judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. The Senate confirmed her nomination in 2010. Since becoming an Associate Judge, she has handled over 300 criminal bench trials. Judge Demeo graduated from Princeton University in 1988, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics. In 1993, she received her Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law, where she served on the Law Review and was a Root-Tilden Scholar. After graduating from law school, Judge Demeo served as an Honors Program trial attorney in the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division. Beginning in 1997, she worked for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, where she served as a national advocate on a wide array of Latino civil rights issues. In 2004, Judge Demeo joined the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, where she handled 45 criminal trials. In 2007, Judge Demeo was appointed as a Magistrate Judge. From August of 2007 through 2009, she served as a criminal trial judge presiding over trials involving criminal traffic and minor misdemeanor charges. In 2010, before becoming an Associate Judge, she handled detention hearings for misdemeanor and felony cases. Judge Demeo taught as an Adjunct Professor at Howard University School of Law, where she taught criminal procedure as well as immigration law.
