Many species, including the widespread North American Wood Frog (Rana sylvatica), require both aquatic and terrestrial habitat, yet insufficient information exists about movements between these environments, nor fine-scale selection patterns within them. To inform conservation planning, we conducted a radio-telemetry study of seasonal patterns of Wood Frog movements and habitat selection in southern Maine. Forty-three frogs were tracked an average of 25.6 days each, April to November 2003. In early spring, Wood Frogs generally selected damp leaf litter retreats on the margins of breeding pools. Following breeding, frogs selected forested wetlands (9.3% of the landscape) over forested uplands (90.7% of the landscape) in 75.3% of radio locations (N 5 544). Postbreeding movements from breeding pools to nearby, closed-canopy, forested wetlands ranged from 102–340 m (median 169m, N 5 8) and included stopovers in upland forest floors ranging from one to 17 days (median two days, N 5 7). -

Although Maple Springs WMA is small, approximately 100 acres, there are a number of differing habitats that include grasslands, forests, and wetlands. Private lands surround the WMA and two of the boundaries are Maple Springs Road and Rigney Road (Figure 1). Both big game and small game hunting occur on the WMA. Big game hunting is limited to the small forest patches occurring on the WMA. Figure 1: Location of Maple Springs WMA. Rabbit hunting is the primary use of the WMA. Once a working farm, the WMA has several ponds and ephemeral wetlands. The forests are mesophytic and there are remnants of Eastern Highland Rim Prairie and Barrens across the WMA. Succession is evident in the old fields. -

Ziele der vorliegenden untersuchung waren die quantitative und qualitative erfassung grobmorphologischer äußerer Mißbildungen an anuren des sierra nanchititla naturreservats (Mexiko) sowie die Identifizierung möglicher ursachen. sechs (6.23 %) der 95 gefangenen Individuen von Lithobates forreri (BoulengeR , 1883) sowie je ein „Beifangexemplar“ von Lithobates zweifeli (h IllIs , F Rost & W eBB , 1984) und Hyla arenicolor CoPe , 1866 zeigten insgesamt acht typen morphologischer Mißbildungen . Die beobachtete Mißbildungsrate lag somit geringfügig über dem mit fünf Prozent angenommenen hintergrundwert einer Population. an Makroparasiten wurden nematoda (Ozwaldocruzi a sp. und Rhabdias savagei ) und trematoda ( Haematoloechus sp. und Gorgoderina tarascae ) an inneren organen sowie Milben der gattung Hannemania auf der Körperoberfläche festgestellt. In den Muskel - gewebsproben, waren die Metalle Blei (Pb) und Kupfer (Cu) nicht nachweis- oder quantifzierbar, während Zink (Zn) in niedrigen (physiologischen) Konzentrationen vorlag. In den Wasserproben wurde Pb nicht nachgewiesen, die Zn and Cu Konzentrationen lagen innerhalb der in Mexiko zulässigen grenzwerte für Fließgewässer. Die autoren schließen als ursache der beobachteten, erhöhten Mißbildungsrate aus: (1) die tätigkeit von Makroparasiten, auf - grund des Fehlens von trematoda der gattung Riberoia , von denen man weiß, das sie Mißbildungen verursachen können und (2) die einwirkung von Pb, Cu and Zn. -
Mercury in Northern Green Frogs and Snapping Turtles from Onondaga Lake, New York
MERCURY IN NORTHERN GREEN FROGS AND SNAPPING TURTLES FROM ONONDAGA LAKE, NEW YORK Prepared by the New York Field Office of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service December 2015 For the Onondaga Lake Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration Trustee Council i ABSTRACT This study was conducted to develop an initial understanding of the exposure of amphibians and reptiles at Onondaga Lake to mercury (Hg). Mercury in Onondaga Lake northern green frogs is within the range of Hg concentrations shown to affect metamorphosis and survival of southern leopard frog tadpoles and metamorphs, but less than concentrations associated with effects in wood frogs and American toads. Mercury in the toenails and blood of snapping turtles from Onondaga Lake was significantly higher than Hg in the toenails and blood of Hamlin Wildlife Management Area (reference area) snapping turtles. Onondaga Lake snapping turtles have more Hg in their keratinous tissue (toenails) than other snapping turtles sampled across New York State, but less Hg than found in keratinous tissues of snapping turtles from a Hg-contaminated area in Virginia. Snapping turtles appear fairly resistant to Hg, but the Hg concentrations found in Onondaga Lake snapping turtles are within the range of concentrations associated with altered thyroid function and immune suppression in other turtle species. Although the diversity of amphibians and reptiles has increased at Onondaga Lake over the past two decades, the herpetofaunal diversity and population densities remain lower than in surrounding areas. This study shows that Hg may be a factor inhibiting the reproduction and health of some amphibians and reptiles at Onondaga Lake. -

Particularly for the state of Jalisco, until 1994 the majority of herpetofauna checklists were made on seasonally tropical dry forest at the Pacific coast. Recently, the herpetofauna checklists for some natural protected areas and surroundings of central and northeastern localities of Jalisco were reported. Sierra de Quila is a natural protected area located in central Jalisco, and these results are part of the first formal study for this area. During 15 months, from January 2009 to September 2010, we surveyed amphibians on an altitudinal gradient including all vegetation types: cloud forest, pine-oak forest, oak forest, riparian forest and tropical deciduous forest. We registered 11 noteworthy range extensions for amphibians within Jalisco and into the Sierra de Quila. Key words: range extension, protected area, Sierra de Quila. Resumen. With the exception of a few counties, they occur throughout Colorado.
