Many a successful film director has either made their name as a music video director or still uses the form to experiment with editing, photography and post production effects. Watch the following two videos by British film directors: Radiohead’s “Street Spirit” (Jonathan Glazer 1995) and FKA Twigs’ “tw-ache” (Tom Beard 2014). What are your thoughts about both videos? In what ways might they be seen as experimental (as well as weird, intriguing and exciting)? How do they create an impact? How do they complement or challenge the music? Who is the target audience for each video? (It can be useful to read the comments on YouTube to get a sense of people’s reactions to them, but don’t do this if you’re sensitive to bad language!) Special Issue – Philosophy of Film Without Theory ‘The flesh is weak.’ Empathy and becoming human in Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin Author Affiliation Colin Heber-Percy United Kingdom Abstract: Jonathan Glazer’s 2013 film Under the Skin offers an unsettling med- itation on humanness through the eyes of an alien predator. This essay reflects on Glazer’s film by drawing it into conversation with the later phenomenology of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, with Heidegger, Martin Buber, and with a number of earlier Greek thinkers who together point us towards a more complex and shared definition of ‘contemplation’ or theory. The paper asks: do films watch us as much as we watch films? Through an ex- ploration of the notion of the mask as a means both of disguise and of disclosure, the paper questions to what extent all human relations are masked, screened. DOI: 10.2478/v10319-012-0002-2 A BLEND OF SOUND AND IMAGE- THE MUSIC VIDEO ELIZA CLAUDIA FILIMON University of Timişoara Email: [email protected] Abstract: The focus of this paper is first of all the issue of authorship in music videos, with reference to the division of tasks between the musician and the director. Secondly, a non-narrative musical piece in analysed - The Chemical Brothers’ Star Guitar - in relation to the narrative video created by Michel Gondry to enrich its meanings and better convey the intended message of the musicians. Keywords: authorship, musical message, video message 1. Introduction Literary critical studies have constantly been holding authorship theories under scrutiny, from voices hailing the paramount role an author has to theoretical studies committing the author to invisibility. Roland Barthes boldly denounced the limiting status of the author in the interpretation of a text, stating the necessity of abandoning the creative voice entirely: “The birth of the reader must be at the cost of the death of the Author” (qtd. in Caughie 1981:213). Michael Foucault distinguished himself from Barthes by tackling the problem from another angle. By separating the indicative and designative functions of the author’s name, he investigated the discourses surrounding and attached to the author’s name. Extending his theories of discourses from The Order of Things and The Archaeology of Knowledge, Foucault considered author as a product of discursive practices, instead of a creative subject. “In undertaking an internal and architectonic analysis of a work and in delimiting psychological and biographical references, suspicions arise concerning the absolute nature and creative role of the subject.” (qtd. -

CHRIS CUNNINGHAM Chris Cunningham es un video-artista fundamentalmente conocido por su trabajo en el área del video musical. Chris Cunningham nació en Reading (Inglaterra) en 1970. Desde muy niño se aficionó al dibujo, luego a hacer esculturas, las cuales fotografiaba. Su carrera artística la inició en la revista de cómics 2000AD bajo el pseudónimo de Chris Halls. Posteriormente trabaja en los efectos especiales de películas como Alien 3, Alien: Resurrección y el Juez Dredd. Trabajaría también en las maquetas de films como Hardware y Nightbreed. Estuvo involucrado en el proyecto del film Inteligencia artificial cuando Stanley Kubrick se ocupaba del mismo. Debutó en el terreno del video musical en 1995, de la mano de Warp Records, con la realización del video promocional de "Second Bad Vibel" (Autechre), y continuó su trabajo con artistas como Squarepusher, Björk, Madonna, Portishead y, sobre todo, Aphex Twin, entre otros. Su segundo video para este músico ("Windowclicker", 1999) fue censurado por MTV en Estados Unidos. En 2000, por su video para "All Is Full Of Love" (Björk), fue premiado por MTV, em los Music Week CAD Awards, en los MVPA Awards y en los Design And Art Direction Awards. En este último certamen obtuvo, entre otras medallas, una de oro por su dirección en la categoría "Pop Promos". Ha realizado comerciales de televisión para marcas internacionales como Nissan o Sony. Some of the most prominent British artists associated with acid jazz include are the band 4Hero, producer Ronny Jordan, and the James Taylor Quartet (the last of which at one point included Nitin Sawhney.) Ambient Music intended to create a particular atmosphere. Brian Eno, considered a pioneer of the genre, notes, “One of the most important differences between ambient music and nearly any other kind of pop music is that it doesn’t have a narrative structure at all, there are no words, and there isn’t an attempt to make a story of some kind.”2 Ambient music often substitutes distinct melodies and rhythmic patterns for a wash of sound. Some prominent British artists during the 1990s include The Orb, KLF, Mixmaster Morris and Aphex Twin. Bhangra Bhangra originated as a male folk dance in Punjab to accompany the harvest festival, Baisakhi. It is still performed as a folk dance and may be identified by its characteristic swinging rhythm played on the dhol and dholki, double-sided barrel drums. From the late 1970s onwards, Punjabi immigrants in Britain began to fuse with electronic dance styles including house music and later hip-hop.3 These styles produced a distinct genre of music that was recognized as one of the first prominent examples of British Asian youth culture. -
